Unstable Leaders Can Kill

International Relations, Presidents

October, 1962, I was a high school sophomore. I still remember watching some of our neighbors suddenly digging “Root Cellars” during the Cuban Missile Crisis. People around the world were nervous about an imminent nuclear war. Our neighbors were terrified because McLeansboro had been the Initial Aiming Point for mock attacks on Evansville. Seeing B-52s and their contrails left a lasting impression.

JFK and his experienced, level-headed advisors averted the catastrophe by his and Khrushchev’s agreement being trusted. When the evidence of the Cuban missiles was being shown to allied leaders, DeGalle said it wasn’t necessary because the President was an honorable man.

Both leaders operated under Mutual Assured Destruction policy which meant a war would destroy both nations and likely the entire planet. Both knew a misstatement or an unplanned action could launch either country’s missiles.

Secretary of State Tillerson recently came close to saying we were prepared to make a first launch in order to hit North Korea’s missiles and nuclear facilities before they launch.

Kim Jung Um is unstable, megalomaniac, and like Hitler, has no regard for his people. People know his statements have little meaning. Kim has stated his missiles could destroy all the American bases in South Korea and Japan. How does anyone know when it’s a warning or bluster? We have ICBMs targeting his country; when do we launch? How can we be certain of hitting every mobile launcher?

Kim might launch because our President, whose stability is questionable, says or tweets something provocative. Many reports have been aired by the media of several foreign countries of the mental state of President Trump and his advisors.

If our missiles start flying over China and Russia to hit North Korea will they sit idle or launch?

Broken Healthcare System

Steve Brill wrote a very extensive article in the March, 2013 issue of Time on Health Care in America. I can’t think of any other industry that rips off Americans as much as the pharmaceutical industry. Other countries negotiate and get greatly reduced prices for their people. Congress has passed laws prohibiting the Medicare and Medicaid from trying to lower prices like the V.A.

The factories (often in foreign countries) make the pills for pennies and then sell it for thousands of percent mark up. Every week brings another news item of a drug that was a dollar a pill and now a hundred dollars or a new Medicine costing $35,000 – $75,000 a year. Ever wonder what a European or Canadian will pay?

The ACA was a good first step and the AHCA kept some of the good, but got rid of some of the things the poor needed and cut expenses for the rich.

The critics of ACA and Medicare say the programs are too costly to the government. The ACA’s insured are sick and/or older but not 65. The younger healthy people don’t sign up to balance the costs.

Many people and think tanks have found our current mish-mash is the reason so many other countries’ citizens are healthier than we are.

By covering the healthy kids, young adults, middle-agers, and seniors, the flat cost to everyone balances the programs income and expenses. It could be adjusted up or down to make it revenue neutral. Additional private insurance could be purchased by each individual at the level of coverage they want. The poor might not be able to afford expensive private coverage and the rich could buy complete coverage.

Two more criteria: our government would not pay any more than other governments, and doctors and hospitals would cost what the local living standard requires.

Real Healthcare News

While Congress toys with our healthcare almost all of us can only hope for the best. The rest of the industrial countries solved the insurance and healthcare for their people years ago. Only one of the many people I have talked to from the U.K., Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Brazil, and Columbia would want our system. Most had our free market cockeyed, hodgepodge medical system before fixing it with a sensible plan.

Americans spend $2.8 trillion on it each year or $1 of every $6 of our GDP. That’s more than the next ten countries combined! What do we get for all that money? We get higher rates of disease, shorter life expectancy, and a rating of 50th in infant mortality. The majority of bankruptcies are caused by the inability to pay medical bills.

Fewer people every year are covered by private insurance through their employers. More people are covered by Medicaid and Medicare and ultimately taxpayers.

Every president since FDR has tried to solve the problem. The ACA was a poor, quick compromise. The recently defeated AHCA plan was big on reducing the taxes for the rich and reducing benefits for the poor.

A fair plan is to lower Medicare to birth and everybody pay $100 per month for what benefits seniors get. Additional insurance can be purchased to cover deductibles. It would solve the healthcare problems and fix the budget shortfall on healthcare.

That will never happen because there’s too much money being made with today’s mesh-mash system! Think that is why the rich live a longer, happier life? Trickle-down economics means a trickle for healthcare!

Baseline Syndrome

During an episode of Madam Secretary Secretary McCord used and explained the term “baseline syndrome.” In the story it referred to the creep of climate change. Each generation starts at a higher temperature and a more damaged ecology than the previous generation did so they don’t feel the cumulative change and damage.

The same term can apply to many situations. In the military it is called mission creep. We send 500 troops in a year with little discussion. The next year another 750 are sent which gets little discussion because it’s a little more than last year but less than 1,000. A 1,000 is big enough to sound huge. Carefully timed steps are better than one big step.

Small budget cuts that pertain to a small number of people are easier to get through than a bigger more widespread cut. Cumulative cuts are less provocative to many groups or people.

A public official might abhor any corruption but watch a game from a V.I.P. Box. The official might then allow their child to take a high paid job from someone who wants some help on some pending legislation.

A generation ago we valued our privacy. Today people put their most intimate details on social media for strangers to read.

Television, broadcast and cable shows get more risqué and violent each year as people get used to the previous level. Talk shows drag their audiences farther left and right to keep their share of ratings.

Baseline Syndrome is why those of my age group are able to talk about “the good ole’ days.”

Misdirected Funds

We have a president who said he wouldn’t take his presidential salary. We don’t yet know if he has kept that promise or if he has already blown through his presidential expense account.

What we do know is he goes to his club in Florida every other weekend at a cost of $2,500,000. As of mid-March that is $10,000,000 and rising. At that rate for four years it would be 104 trips for at least a quarter billion dollars.

For now the first lady is staying in their penthouse in New York City. A very conservative estimate is about a $1,000,000 per day. That’s a third of a billion each year.

His proposed budget cuts back on school breakfasts, healthcare for the poor, and many other costs he says our country can’t afford.

Somewhere I think our billionaire president has lost touch with how the people who elected him survive on their salaries. Is he still thinking “me, me, me” and not what he can do for the country?

This Sputnik Doesn’t Fly

Russia has a new Sputnik and it’s extremely dangerous to democracy. No, it doesn’t fly in outer space; it operates in cyberspace. Putin has put together a battalion of hackers and media specialists. Where did you think those stories concocted and spread about Hillary Clinton last year (remember Pizzagate) or about the leaders and potential winners this year in European elections and those Russians who Putin doesn’t like come from — Sputnik!

Sputnik has fabricated stories about many Russians to make it easier for him to kill, jail, or exile if they crossed Putin in some way. Their expertise is so good many intelligent people believe the concoctions, not just the gullible and stupid. Putin has an opponent’s killed and the people were told it was gangsters.

Just as Putin picked Trump, who he could control, and not Clinton, who scared him, he has picked who he wants in France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Many Europeans, after learning how Russia affected our elections, are learning how to ignore Sputnik’s lies and fabrications. With our own smear experts and the Russians looking to get their picks elected, why do people look at social media sites and other propaganda? If you want to know if something is true check politifacts or reputable media which can be sued. Talking heads are covered by the first amendment. That’s Fox and MSNBC, etc.

Isn’t it too bad Trump’s people have no corner to put the President when he rants and raves. In Mid-February he spoke out and tweeted the opposite of what his cabinet members were saying to other countries. One day he is for something and the next he is against it. He says his administration is a smooth running machine, it isn’t.

His comments remind me of Richard Nixon’s rants about the press during the Watergate stories. Those stories led to his abdication before impeachment. The difference is Nixon had a well-oiled machine of experienced people. He had Kissinger as his advisor while Trump depends on John Bannon and 31-year old Stephen Miller.

Trump says he has had no business with Russians, but his son said in an interview a few years ago that “we are doing an inordinate amount of business with Russians”. Who’s lying?

If Trump comes on TV and says we need to invade a country because… Would you believe?

His Word Is Insufficient

History cites the power and honor of the President of the United States when the President of France was asked if he would like to see the photographic evidence of Russian missiles in Cuba. He said “No, the President’s word is sufficient.”

Can you image anybody taking President Trump’s word for anything? The only bi-partisan agreement in the House and Senate is the occupants of the White House are undependable and untrustworthy. The entire administration seems to be composed of multi-millionaires and billionaires with no board experience in running the second biggest corporation (China is biggest). Diplomacy with a level-head keeps us out of war with another country and gets us help from dependable allies.

President Kennedy’s level-headed diplomacy prevented World War III. If a similar situation happened today, you could kiss your butt goodbye!

Economics

When I built my house 39 years ago with a 30-year mortgage, I was thrilled. A few years later I found if I waited the full 30 years it would cost 3 times my original loan. I paid it down quickly.

That’s important because when Clinton left office all the 30-year and nearly all the 20-year bonds were paid off. They were deciding on how many 10-years bonds could be paid off without wrecking the world’s financial stability.

Bush cut taxes, raised expenses and started two wars costing trillions. Soon 20 and 30-year bonds were back. Obama inherited the great recession which cut revenues increasing deficits and debt.

Now we have a huge deficit and a 17 trillion debt. As interest rates go up the money we pay in interest will go up. That means a higher portion of the revenue will go to interest payments. Trump wants to cut taxes to the super rich and corporations. That will create higher deficits and debt.

To overcome the old debt, the new administration is going to propose, not a 40-year bond, but a 100-year bond. If my 30-year bond was going to cost me triple the money I borrowed, what do you think a 100-year will cost? It is 6 times!!!

Fair Pay For State Workers

Fair Pay, Union

For thirteen years I worked alongside Mr. Yanko’s Pipe Fitters Local #597 as a non-union estimator and field engineer. They taught me many things and I taught many of their apprentices engineering. I worked with their journeymen to solve problems they encountered. We built the Ni-Gas SNG Plant, Collins Station, Braidwood Station and LaSalle Station.

The local is one of the largest in the national union. I don’t know if other locals are organized the same, but 597 was basically run by the piping companies who employed the members. Some of the leaders were permanently employed members may of had some ownership.

We had many discussions about the local but I never heard a single derogatory remark about the arrangement. During those thirteen years it honored only one strike by another union. Members were well-paid and expected to do a good day’s work. If they didn’t, they left voluntarily or otherwise.

I understand Mr. Yanko’s support for AFSCME since he is a 597 member, but his union’s model won’t work for the state. I think a responsible union is necessary but a uniform pay scale is wrong. The wages of someone in Cook or the collar counties may allow a decent living. The same wages in most of the rest of Illinois allows a very high living standard.

I think a graduated system should be used to create a new pay scale. This would be done by freezing the scale in cheaper areas while higher areas got a raise. The maximum difference could be $10,000. This would be fair to their neighbors and the state’s taxpayers. Perhaps it could be extended to legislators — Oops, that will never happen.
