I don’t know when I first knew the importance of the United States Supreme Court but I aced my high school Constitution Test in 1965. It was a revered part of our Democracy. Not everyone always agreed with their verdicts but they were the last interpreters of the Constitution.

Nine people comprising the court have agreed to be unbiased in their opinions and leave previous decision alone. They were expected to remain completely above reproach. In return they will be well paid and have a lifetime job and great pension. They and their spouse get great above average health insurance; and are treated with extreme deference.

Most decisions were close to unanimous in spite of what the President that appointed them hoped. In order to be a Supreme Court Judge, the President has one or more people check out a group of people. They would get lots of input from many people, especially politicians. The Committee would then forward their top picks to the President who would then interview each one. From that list the President would select one. Then the person goes through the discussions with the Senators on the judicial committee. If they approve, the appointment is sent to the full Senate for approval. If the majority of Senators agree, then the candidate is sworn into the revered office.

I should say once revered office since today their standing is single digit in some polls. Why? First is their testimony before the committee is under oath and the three appointed by former President Donald Trump and Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas appointed by former President George W. Bush lies repeatedly. Thomas has been treated to millions in gifts. Samuel A. Alito Jr supports the people who tried to overthrow the government on January 6.

On yes, one very interesting point is the Court sets the ethics rules for all the Federal Court Judges. However the Supreme Court has no ethics rules for themselves. Their conscious is supposed to be their ethics boundary. At least three on this court have shown their ethics is far outside of the rules they have set forth for lower court judges; hence there is little respect for them or their opinions.
