Food for Serious Thought

The modern hypothesis is based on life destroying itself by its own actions. Over two billion years ago the second great extinction of life occurred. Before that time life was bacteria eating and giving off gases that would be poisonous to most life today. Along came bacteria that changed its exhaust gases from the toxins to oxygen. As oxygen levels increased 99 per cent of life died. That oxygen allowed for multi-celled life to evolve. Several extinctions afterward nearly wiped out life but the Great Oxidation Event was the first where life nearly made the Earth barren of life again.

If one species was able to wipe out 99 percent of life two billion years ago is our heating up the Earth going to do the same thing? We know Venus didn’t always have the lead melting high temperature cloud blanket it has today. We are about to have a runaway climate change here that humans are causing. Could it be that we will continue to cause hundreds of species to go extinct each year until almost all are gone?

Is each of us participating in making that extinction event possible? That possibility should be lots of food for thought.

Ever notice those who protest the most about Federal expenditures are the first in line to get as much as they can. Those Republican Representatives and Senators from Texas have been very critical of the infrastructure bill’s costs. They managed to get funding for their fancy storm surge and sea rise control system. The initial cost is 23 billion but we know it is going to be much higher and paid by the rest of us. These are the same legislators that claim global warming isn’t real!

About a decade ago North Carolina passed a law making it illegal to talk about global warming and its effects on shore line real estate. With the beaches being destroyed and the beach front houses being damaged or destroyed, tens of millions are being spent to repair the beaches and build levees to protect the houses. Guess which state’s legislators deny global warming and criticize the Federal climate change expenditures but are deep in the trough to protect the beach front.

Don’t forget all those two-faced hogs in Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. Begging for funding to repair storm damage and poorly maintained infrastructure like Birmingham’s water system. Texas keeps their taxes low because the price of oil is high but when it is low they beg for Federal aid to keep the doors open. Texas is for deregulation but look at what happened to their power plants and lines during cold snaps.

These legislators demand all the Federal money they can get to buy votes while telling voters they are being taxed too much and they aren’t getting their fair share. The bigger the hog, the longer they are in office.

What a Predicament

There’s a saying about being between a rock and a hard place and the world is in that spot. We have a huge disaster looming and the alternative is also a disaster. The rock is climate change and the hammer is the need for petroleum and natural gas.

Scientists and environmentalists tell us we must get away from fossil fuels and hope we can keep the Earth from getting too hot destroying not only our way of life but life itself. We know the Greenland and Antarctic glaciers are melting which will raise the oceans over 200 feet flooding most of the world’s major cities.

The only way to prevent this disaster is to quickly reduce our dependence on carbon dioxide and methane. It will take thousands of years for what is already dumped by humans into the air to fall back to the surface. Science is working to find a way to reduce that amount faster.

However our problem is we want to replace the power plants, vehicles, and other uses with renewable energy and nuclear power. Currently the power source for vehicles and storage batteries is lithium which will be depleted by the end of the century if we don’t recycle. The current cost to replace batteries on any electric vehicle is several thousand dollars and should be done within ten years. In addition the capacity of the battery could have declined 30% of its original capacity. Relying on wind and solar during windless cloudy days will overtax community storage facilities. The current and anticipated use of nuclear plants won’t make up for the loss.

If we don’t cut back on the pollution and embrace the change, we will die and if we do economies may be destroyed now. Ouch!

Pausing Carbon Emissions Targets

A couple of decades ago the world made stringent targets on cutting carbon emissions. The World’s energy production and usage was basically calm and predictable. In the United States a new nuclear plant was being built while a few were in the planning stage of being retired. Coal plants were being scrapped and replaced by natural gas fired ones. The automotive industry was starting to design electric vehicles and reducing emissions on their gasoline engines. Fossil fuel companies were still saying they were not the problem because climate change didn’t exist but had started planning a new future for the companies.

Now conditions have changed greatly. Now the Russian-Ukrainian War and the pandemic rebound has caused fossil fuel prices to skyrocket because of shortages. Coal prices have quadrupled because some plants here are not closing while others are being restarted. Instead of planning to reduce natural gas production, we are increasing the number of wells and production not for here but to turn into liquefied natural gas (LPG) to be shipped to other continents. Europe depended on Russia for natural gas and oil but now must find other sources for heat and power. That source appears to be the United States causing the rising prices for Americans. Germany was planning on closing all their nuclear plants but now should reconsider and postpone any retirements.

In spite of the growing demands to cut emissions to save the world from runaway climate change, geo-political considerations and demands have made reduction of carbon emissions in the United States more difficult. Whether this is short term or decades long are unknown.

As I write this, pictures of the massive F4 tornado that hit Winterset, Iowa are on the television screen. My first thought is of the destruction of Mayfield, Kentucky. This one is basically a winter tornado and rare or at least, it used to be rare. Climate change has upset historical weather data used for projections.

People don’t realize all that a minor change in the levels of carbon dioxide and methane are doing to day-to-day weather, world climate, and sea levels. Young people today have a base reality different than people of my age. I remember the ground freezing five feet down. I remember temperatures of 20-25 degrees below zero and trying not to freeze my lungs. During the last couple decades seldom have I felt a few degrees below freezing and the ground froze only a few inches.

I remember ice breakers trying to cut through the arctic ice cap in the summer. Now ice breakers can get between the northern land masses and the thick ice of the cap in winter. I remember seeing glaciers in glaciers in Glacier National Park in the early 1950s. Now they are almost all gone. Melting of the world’s glaciers is raising the ocean levels around the world. By the end of this century many o the world’ cities will be flooded or diked as a temporary stop-gap measure.

Build More Nukes

Even the most avid climate activists know wind and solar nor massive batteries will not be able to supply enough electricity for the future without fossil fuels. Geo thermal and hydro will continue to produce a small percentage of our overall demand. As we switch to electric vehicles, demand will increase exponentially. We will need to rely on many more nuclear plants to be a base load for that increase.

China and many other countries are planning to build over 200 new design nuclear plants. The United States is still building an old style plant in Georgia and has gone over budget by over 300 percent. Several new designs for smaller, cheaper reactors are being designed. Two are from Mill Gates’ funded design groups. Six have been submitted by various groups with more to be submitted.

I live in an area with six units in three plants (two boiling water and one pressurized water) and thousands of tons of stored used nuclear rods both in pools and casks. Permanent storage of those rods was supposed to be in Yucca Mountain in Nevada. The plan was to turn the nuclear waste into glass cylinders to be stored in drilled holes deep inside the mountain. Billions was spent on getting it ready until Nevada Senator Reid stopped the work just before opening. For safety from terrorism and accidents, it must be opened and operated as soon as possible.

We need to build lots of new design safe nuclear plants for a stable nighttime base load and for days when no wind and sunshine are available.

The Blue Marble

This blog is named after how the Earth looked to the astronauts on Apollo 8 as they rounded the moon in December 1968. It looked like a blue marble in the blackness of space. Seeing the Blue Marble’s loneliness in space affected them all in different ways. The one commonality in their perceptions was this little Blue Marble contains the entire world’s fauna and flora with no other place to go to if the Earth becomes uninhabitable.            The plot for hundreds of science-fiction movies are based on something happening to the Earth. Often some of the people invent some way of getting off the planet and going to some pristine planet or cruising around until the Earth is livable again. Some have a catastrophic event which so damaged the planet billions died and massively upset the ecosystem.

Nearly two centuries ago scientists found that the Earth’s atmosphere held the sun’s reflected heat radiation controlled by carbon dioxide. They surmised a little more or less caused the climate’s temperature to be higher or lower. Shortly after, the industrial revolution started to kick in, spewing CO2 at an ever increasing rate. Now we must figure out how to stop putting more CO2 into the air and how to reduce what is there rapidly.

Probes to Venus are very short-lived because surface temperatures can melt lead. Analysis of their data shows it may once have been Earth-like before volcanic activity put massive amounts of CO2 out creating so much heat it evaporated the water. Carbon dioxide and water vapor blanket the planet to the extent all radiation of the surface is kept inside the blanket. Our spewing of CO2 could be having the same effect as the volcanoes on Venus. We have done this much damage in a couple hundred years. How will we be able to solve the future destruction of all life on Earth?

What the Astronauts saw surrounding the Blue Marble was a small ring of air around the blue orb. This thin layer protects us and at the same time keeps us from freezing. We loose some of that small ring of air every day but without it life will not exist on Earth. If it gets too warm or too cold life as we know it cannot exist. Although carbon dioxide is only a tiny percentage (.03%) a minute increase or decrease changes the balance we need to survive.

By analyzing the air bubbles in glaciers scientists have been able to determine the parts per million (ppm) of carbon dioxide in the air over many thousands of years. At the start of the industrial revolution about 1744 the CO2 content was 277 ppm. In 1915 it was 301pp. Even though we had inefficiently burn coal for warmth for centuries, we were now starting to burn massive quantities of it to produce electricity. In 1960, it was 317 ppm with thousands of coal and petroleum burning power plants coming on line along with millions more cars each year. Forty years later it was 370 pppm. In 2017, it was 407 ppm. The delicate balance is obviously being upset. The last figure available to me is 2019 and 409.8 ppm with the most rapid increase being the last decade. The question now is this: Is it too late to save us all?

The Earth has many built-in mechanisisms which normally keep the CO2 level from getting too high. The oceans absorb it making them more acidic. Oceans can do this up to a certain percentage. They have already absorbed so much that shellfish and coral are having trouble forming shells. Several ideas have been proposed to reduce the current acid load and to attract more to an additive. One additive under consideration is thousands of tons of iron powder.

Another of Earth’s remedies is volcanic activity. The sulfuric gases and ash block the sunlight cooling the air and the surface. However, too much and we get 1816’s year with no summer in the Northern hemisphere. June had 6 inches of snow and a hard frost every month of the year. Eruptions of an Indonesian volcano caused the disruption lasting several years.

Another is putting fine powder or moisture high up in the stratosphere to reflect light. The idea came from the total shut down of all jet traffic after 9-11, allowing the air to clear of all contrails and their moisture. Did the pandemics reducing the number of flights help to raise the temperature in 2020 and 2021? I have asked a professor friend of another science to talk to someone in climatology or physics to think about it.

Trees pull carbon out of the air and hold it until they rot or get burned. One of the inventions is solar powered devices acting like a tree to collect carbon dioxide. The cost is prohibitive but may be necessary in the overall plan to save all life.

Today’s news is forest fires in the Western States, Canada, Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Siberia among other places. Most of those areas in the Northern hemisphere have had significant forest fires for the last several years. The Southern hemisphere’s fires in Australia and South America have scorched millions of acres. Fires in both areas have contributed to global warming. Fires around the Arctic Circle plus an occasional 100 degree day have caused the tundra to melt releasing methane. Methane is over 30 times more effective than CO2 in keeping the heat from escaping.

Many people deny the facts because of politics and greed, or both. They overlook the higher temperatures each year, fires, droughts, and floods as predicted by climate change scientists decades ago. The political reasons because they are guided and bought by fossil fuel industries and the culture of living for today. These people only care about themselves and not about their children’s future. These people cannot be easily changed so we must trust their children and grand children to do their best to save not just themselves.

They don’t recognize that insects and animals are surviving winters farther North. An excellent visible example is the White Birch Beetle is killing forests on the Colorado-Wyoming border when it seldom survived the New Mexico border in the 1960s. A warming climate means flora and fauna must move higher up the mountains in the Western states to keep their optimum temperature. Armadillos are approaching Central Illinois. Updated nursery zone charts are showing plants able to survive in areas farther North than a few decades ago.

The line charts have gone from a gently sloping line to one starting to curve upward indicating a quicker rising temperature. The greater the arc, the faster the temperature rises. The plan is try to stop the rise to no more than four degrees Fahrenheit over pre-industrial levels by the year 2100. It has already risen almost two degrees of the four. If we don’t make a serious effort to stop the rise by cutting CO2 and methane emissions, we can’t even hold the rise to five or six degrees by the year 2100.

If we can’t unite enough to stop it Earth can become another Venus where CO2, methane, and other heat capturing gases have evaporated the water., The water vapor and gases have blocked the radiated heat in so much of the surface temperature can melt the land. Venus has gone from Earth-like to a fireball. At what point does the build-up start a runaway increase in temperatures causing the Blue Marble to become another lifeless body in the solar system?

More articles to follow will be about how we can save ourselves. Some will be repeat ideas while others will be new. We are doing this to ourselves and we are the only ones who can save us.

Bleak Future

Fifty-one years ago I was studying the projection for life on Earth. We knew the two most important factors were global warming and population growth. We knew CO2 was going to raise the planets temperature causing the climate bands to shift toward the Poles. It would cause the glaciers to melt and raise the ocean levels. This would cause massive permanent flooding of coastal cities and portions of many states. A 300 foot increase impacted food production. Increasing need to energy would increase the CO2 levels and increase temperatures causing further disruption.

At that time the population was a sustainable 3.5 billion. The actual numbers have matched projections. Those projections haven’t changed. We are still looking at doubling again within a century. Some optimists said the seas could feed us, but I knew that wasn’t going to happen. We have managed to feed the higher income people but those billions at the bottom are going to suffer even more with wider areas becoming unproductive.

We didn’t consider wars in our discussions on migration. We saw the people in Central America and Mexico crossing our border, and Africans into Europe.

All of those projections have rung true. What we didn’t consider was anti-science lunacy, mountains of garbage, chemical and plastics damage to the environment, and political denial of facts. We also didn’t consider a loss of life on the magnitude of World War II.

The future is still very bleak.

In the past, single homes and small communities have been moved out of flood prone areas or lost their flood insurance because of repeated claims. A few years ago a levee protecting thousands of acres of Missouri farmland was blown up to save Cairo, Illinois. Cairo has been a dilapidated wreck for several decades. So why do we continue to spend billions year after year on reviving communities and homes that are flooded several times each decade?

We have spent hundreds of billions to build levees and dikes to try to reduce flooding from our creeks and rivers. Those with the lowest levees gets flooded. Much of New Orleans is below sea level and the Mississippi River. We spend billions to raise and rebuild levees, install new pumps, and rebuild barrier vegetation. New Orleans just missed the worst of Ida and still was damaged and powerless. The area to the west was destroyed and flooded. We will spend billions again for Ida and hurricane season isn’t even half over.

Hurricanes are getting stronger because the Gulf is getting warmer. We are getting more hurricanes because the Atlantic is warmer. If they don’t come into the Gulf they sweep up the East Coast flooding the states well inland.

We know it is only going to get worse and lot more expensive. Isn’t it time to say move out of those areas that are going to flood? We will pay for the move because it will be cheaper than rebuilding every year or so. Some of Louisiana rebuilds every year. Isn’t it time to quit wasting money?

Sometimes knowledge is comforting but this is scary in the extreme. We know the climate is changing and changing rapidly due to increased levels of carbon in the air. The CO2 we are spewing in the air has been the major cause of the temperature increase by our burning fossil fuels. Some of our damage is from burning natural gas, methane, which reduces the damage to CO2 levels. Methane is thirty times more damaging than carbon dioxide. We bring up methane from deep underground and animals create some, but the growing release is from gas well leakage and the thawing of the tundra. We are working to stop the well leakage but with each passing day thousands of megatons from the melting tundra are released blocking the radiant heat from escaping.

The damage we have caused is melting the Greenland glacier and some of the Antarctic glaciers. This plus heat expansion of the oceans is going to raise the oceans over thirty feet flooding the world’s coastal cities and hinterlands displacing over two billion people. The loss of all the world’s glaciers could raise the level to cover all of Florida, Louisiana, and several eastern states. The droughts and floods will increase in number and severity. Many areas that are now cool in winter will require air conditioning in a few decades.

We have unintentionally raised the temperature but we have pushed the boulder over the top of the hill and it is starting to take up speed. We are trying to slow it down and probably too late. What we don’t know is how deep is the valley it is rolling into and how wide before the boulder can start rolling up the next hill. Will we still be around?
