Leading the World

The United States is finally leading again in something. We have more cases of Covid 19 Virus than any other area or country. We have had more deaths than any other country or area of comparable size or larger. China is about five times our size and the European Union is slightly larger yet they aren’t even close to us. With the resurgence of the first wave of infections, today’s predictions by the administration’s experts have decreased the number of months it will take for us to reach 200,000 deaths from January to November.

Why does the country that spends so much on health care per capita than any other country be leading the world? The President keeps blaming our disastrous responses on China and the World Health Organization. The truth is China didn’t know how virolent or how it was spread. One doctor tried to alert authorities but he didn’t yet have enough cases to convince anyone. When the authorities saw what was going on, they brought in WHO. Several Americans were part of that team. When the team verified the Chinese information, alerts were issued. After dumping Obama’s pandemic people, America had nobody with access to the Oval Office to start a reaction. Trump dithered on doing what was needed while the rest of the world was locking down. The result, according to experts who were fired afterwards, was 30 to 50,000 additional deaths. Their statements were made in April.

Political interference from Trump over-riding his picked team of experts is the cause of today’s predicament in the states with Republican governors. He told them to open up too early, not to test, and use only positive talks. He has told the Centers for Disease Control’s Director Robert Redfield to ease the guidelines for sending children back to school. They didn’t, so Redfield’s days are probably numbered. He wants every child back in school before the election. He literally said he would force school districts to make children come to school. Before saying he would withhold money he stopped short of saying he would direct Attorney General Barr to look into it. Later he said he would use money from the CARE Act to support schools, getting all of the children back. More Mismanagement.

Arizona’s experts and medical personnel are crying out for Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) supplies. Their hospitals are full and their Republican Governor did an update after nine critical days of silence. Republican Governors have abdicated their job of protecting their citizens by giving mayors’ authority to lockdown or wear masks. At the same time those same Republican Governors still follow Trump’s leads by criticizing those same mayors who acted on science.

This is the same routine of denial and mismanagement which Trump caused in March and April. As the demand for PPE and ventilators ballooned, Trump said he would supply all the states need. He couldn’t because the rest of the world, by then, was also buying them up or keeping all they could manufacture. Then he said the states were responsible, causing them to bid against each other. This caused prices to skyrocket even more and poor quality equipment to be purchased at high prices. Trump then criticized the states for bidding up the items and said he would take control because he had all the items they needed, but he didn’t.

Testing supplies is another blunder. He keeps saying plenty of tests are available but states are pleading for more. As of the end of June over a hundred different tests are available but the CDC has only been able to certify eleven as reliable. Experts say we need to be testing ten times more per day and getting quick answers. One area in Florida takes nine to eleven days for an answer which is only eighty percent accurate. Other tests the CDC tested didn’t get to twenty percent accurate. Some of the tests had zero. Many states bought those because the CDC’s own tests didn’t work and they hadn’t approved any yet.

The President constantly lies about the virus and its effects only to have his own experts contradict him moments later. He is still calling Covid 19 a hoax and the numbers of infected not important. He has all but dismissed Fauci and others who told the truth. Last week he said we shouldn’t test so much because it makes him look bad before the election.

The one truthful thing he has undeniably said; his only concern is getting re-elected. This shows he doesn’t care how many die, just if he can win enough states in November. His niece is right. He is mentally ill.

Foolish Behavior

Over the last several days I have been watching interviews with a variety of people. Some were sad, some were uplifting, and some were the most stupid, selfish people America can produce.

The last evaluation is about people who follow the spouting of some of the most idiotic conspiracy rants denying the virus exists, that it is just another flu, and masks are an infringement of their rights. It harkens back to the “Ugly American” image Americans had in foreign countries. The locals saw selfish better-than-thou people who were discourteous and self serving. Some even go out of their way to contaminate others and themselves.

Some of the interviewees were people who had been reckless by going into packed bars and restaurants without social distancing and masks. Now they were in the intensive care unit. One was a husband and wife whose son had just died from it. He had gone to a party, got infected, and gave it to his parents. Shortly after the mothers interview she died. His stupidity killed himself, his mother and maybe his father who was still in the ICU at the time.

One thing I learned from the interviews is when a person is put on a ventilator they will usually have lung damage and often cognitive loss. These sometimes are permanent. I saw one guy who had been on a ventilator for several weeks. He had trouble breathing, talking, and moving.

It is sad how people decide to not wear a mask and infect themselves and people they know and love.

Cannon Fodder

A few hundred years ago one side would attack the other in battle by putting their most disposable, least trained troops in the front lines. Those troops would charge into cannon fire or musket lines and be mowed down; hence those disposable troops were called “cannon fodder.” The reason for the deaths is the better troops can advance before the other side could reload and win the battle.

Iran sent kids and old men into the minefields in front of the Iraqi Army. They stepped on mines, were blown apart by artillery, and were mowed down by machine guns and rifle fire. They shot up their ammunition and shells and had to retreat before the Iranian guards got to them. The kids and old men were disposable “cannon fodder.”

Reopening schools and running them like last year makes the kids “cannon fodder” because the administration has said we have to get the kids back in school so the parents can go back to work. This might help the economy which, in turn, might get Trump re-elected. This means Trump is using the kids as “cannon fodder” as a chance to get re-elected.

Wear A Mask

I keep hearing people say the first amendment says they don’t have to wear a mask if they don’t want to do so. The Morris Menards has a sixteen square foot sign in front of its store making it very clear if the shopper doesn’t wear a mask they can’t come in. They have a person stationed by the gates to make sure.

Using the same argument, restaurants post “no shoes, no shirt, no service” signs which people have obeyed for years. Surely, seeing some big hairy chest while eating is less important than the possibility of getting and spreading a killer virus to others.

A person’s right to do something that isn’t banned by law ends the moment their right interferes with another person’s right. To think otherwise is just stupid. If a person doesn’t want to wear a mask in their vehicle, in the parking lot, in their house and yard, or in the middle of a field, that’s fine. If they like to walk or run on the street, sidewalk, or trail and are likely to encounter another person they should wear a mask or practice social distancing. They should wear a mask in apartment halls.

It is a person’s civic duty to keep from spreading a deadly virus or even a regular cold. It is selfish, inconsiderate, and un-American to aid in catching and then spreading the virus. I wonder when the law enforcement people will connect a person spreading the virus to another person who dies from it and calls it a felony!

Oh, Tom Hanks and his wife caught it in February and they keep getting their anti-bodies amount tested. They are declining rapidly which may mean they can soon get it again. Tom was on TV advocating the wearing of masks.

Good People Wear Masks

This is what I know about the Novel Corona Virus which is also called Covid 19 virus. The President says the virus can’t live in summer heat and masks aren’t needed which is why he doesn’t wear one.

The experts say we need to wear masks so we can make our own, buy some home-made ones, buy some cheap Chinese ones, or buy the expensive ones. The expensive ones come with copper threads or nanosilver bears masks. How can people be conned into paying so much for a mask that is no better than a home-made one?

Today we are told we have 40,000 new infections each day and Dr. Fauci says he believes it could get to 100,000 each day. Republicans that once denied the need to wear a mask now tell Trump he needs to set an example by wearing one. Today, June 30, he again said it is almost over when over a thousand die every day. A fantasy world and deniability doesn’t save lives, it cost lives.

Don’t do as Trump says or does, wear your mask in public or social distance. I may not like Governor Pritzker but his plan to open the state has us with one of the lowest rates while the Republican Governors are backtracking as their rates skyrocket and hospitals fill up with victims.

I have never felt the need to go to Europe so it doesn’t bother me that the E.U. just put a ban on travelers from here. Trump laughs at European leaders but their rates are less than a tenth of ours. Americans deny science and die while Europeans live.

Oh yes, the Chinese may have found another virus at least as bad.

I don’t know who started calling the Covid 19 a war but we are over 100,000 deaths so I wondered how war’s battle deaths added up to Covid’s number. These eight wars totaled only 93,753 battle deaths or about the same number as early May: Revolutionary War – 4,435, War of 1812 – 2,360, Mexican War – 1,733, Spanish American War – 385, Vietnam War 47,434, Korean War – 33,739, Gulf War – 147, and Iraq War – 3,519.

The predictions for virus deaths by the election surpasses the Union deaths (140,144) during the Civil War. Another way to look at the prediction is to add the eight wars to World War I’s 53,402 or 147,155.

If we get a second attack, as suspected, this fall and winter, the total might go over World War II’s 291,557 battle deaths. If we can’t get vaccines that will protect us from this strain and those it is mutating into, we could surpass all of them combined!

Testing For Virus

Using the John Hopkins study as a basis, we now know a test from the most reliable product will give an average 38% false negative on the first day of symptoms. On the fourth day of symptoms false negatives are down to 20%. Many of the products are far less accurate. Some people actually died before they tested positive. We have some tests which give an answer in five minutes and some require days. Some will give as many false positives as false negatives.

People can have the virus, take a test, get a negative reading, then infect everybody who gets close to them because they were told they were free of the virus. People can be free and get infected minutes after having the test. Trump’s body guards and staff are required to have one of the rare five minute tests daily. He says anybody that wants a test can have one but that is absolutely not true!

The ultimate plan of the experts is to have enough tests to have all Americans tested in one ten day period this fall or early winter. It would mean testing about 200 million or 20 million a day. Otherwise negatives will become infected before any people are tested and quarantined.

The vaccine may be found and approved (Hope it is safe) and a couple of hundred million shots made by next spring. The number one chance is from Oxford in UK. Trump keeps saying we will only use one invented in American. American made ones are going to take longer.

I don’t know if testing is worth the effort unless we all get a quick test at the same time with 100% accuracy.

Damned If You Do

The President only cares about how he is perceived by the voters in November. He is reticent about continuing to damage the economy with a lockdown and against his picked experts’ advice by trying to get people to go back to work. If the economy is on the road to recovery, he thinks his chances will be far better than if it is bad. After fouling up the entire response, he must depend on a recovering economy. He repeatedly changed his mind and responsibilities, usually against his pandemic advisers’ advice.

Congress and the administration have run up a huge debt and Trump must have the economy going again, no matter how many people needlessly die. The government must get money to operate. America must work as soon as possible. Either open or save people. Trump is willing to exchange an additional 60,000 to 100,000 lives for the possibility of getting re-elected.

Governor Pritzker has decided to save people at the risk of destroying the state’s economy for years. Pritzker thinks his duty is to the people first. How to do both is the problem.

The problem is Trump can print as much money as he needs and the Federal Reserve will cause trillions to magically appear to help the economy. Pritzker can’t and started the year with a financial crisis and few ways to remedy the situation.

Both are faced with a similar problem but on a different scale and with different objectives. Trump is worried about re-election and Pritzker is worried about lives. Both are damned – whichever way it turns out – for good or bad. It may take a year or more to find out who was right.

Why Back To Church

I understand why ministers and preachers want their congregations back in the building. Churches are no different from social and service organizations. Most club and church memberships meet weekly and develop a friendship with others and a routine. Churches operate on donations at their services and service organizations often do the same.

Churches are different in one respect. Ministers, preachers, custodians and others are paid employees. The bigger the congregation, the bigger the payroll. Some large and mega churches spend over a million in salaries. Most don’t have enough tucked away to keep paying salaries for long. They need people in the pews putting checks, cash or electronic payments in the “baskets.”

The other reason is the routine and one I learned over twenty-eight years ago as president of a service club. People who attended every week formed a routine and enjoyed people who they would not normally see otherwise. When people miss a few meetings they lose the routine need and will often not return as often or not at all. Being out for six, eight, ten weeks will end a lot of organizations and give club members and congregation members a chance to stop going or to go someplace else.

Whichever is the reason for talking their congregation back into the pews, the people will be told it is “God’s Will” if they get sick or die.

Covid 19 Vaccine

As a news junkie, I hear a great push to fast track a vaccine. I understand why the rush and why the administration wants to fast track it, and why so many experts want more testing on human subjects before massive use. I, and they, remember other fast tracked vaccines and drugs.

The first polio vaccine by Dr. Jonas Sauk was conducted on kids from orphanages. It was successful–for a while. Before it went out to many others, they found that every one of orphans had a severe case of polio. The vaccine was weakened, retested, and mass produced.

There is a reason not to fast track a vaccine and give it to millions. Some races, ethnics, age groups, compromised, and of course, pregnant react differently. Remember the last class’s experiment with a fast track sleeping pill called Thalidomide? It caused thousands of women to give birth to babies without arms and legs.

This is just two examples of fantastic blunders in which the FDA didn’t research drug company’s claims to their testing of human subjects. I believe the World needs vaccines so we can over populate Earth. As I talk with my senior citizen relatives around the country, none of us will be in the front of the lines.
