Why High Meat Prices

Vice-President Kamala Harris and Democratic Nominee for President 2024 said after she was elected she would go after the food companies that were gouging Americans by inflating prices. I try to pay attention to all news including financial. For several years the Big Four Meat Wholesalers have been getting sued by grocery stores for their operating as a monopoly. We know some of the names because their name goes on some of their products. Harris is probably very aware of those suits although few of us are aware of them.

Those suits have pretty well stayed far out of the news until a huge user of the products of those four companies filed its lawsuit. When MacDonald’s sued for ripping them off and causing their fourteen thousand restaurants to keep their prices high the media paid attention! However the involvement of the Federal Justice System is dependent on who wins the November elections. If Harris wins the Justice Department will investigate and if Trump wins the monopoly will continue with his support since those companies and their leaders support his election.

The four companies that MacDonald’s is suing are Tyson, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef Packing Company. The suit says the Big Four have colluded in manipulating prices for over a decade. One way they have done this is by limiting supplies of cattle, hogs, and chickens.

Other companies’ suits have been consolidated in with MacDonald’s are suits filed by BJ’s Wholesale, Sodexo, Target, and Aldi’s. I assume more companies will now want to be added to those retailers.

An Amazon Warehouse in New York has voted to be in a union. Why when they aren’t asking for more money or many benefits would they rock the boat? The prime reason seemed to be the desire to be treated as a human and not some disposable piece of meat. A lot of this disregard seems to have occurred about the same time as personnel departments became human resources. We all know how Americans treat resources. We use them up and throw them away.

Warehouse jobs are changing because they need thousands of people to do all the merchandize handling. Robotics can do some of the work but not as fast as humans so people are much needed. In today’s world many humans are still needed so a smart company should start thinking of their employees as an asset to be cared for and respected.

Fifteen Dollars an Hour

Minimum wage is a complicated issue because of differing economic areas. The cost of living in an urban area is far more expensive than in a rural area and those differ greatly from different states and regions.

Using Illinois as an example of $15.00 per hour, within the Routes 47 and I-80, rents can easily take up half of a take home check. Add higher vehicle costs including maintenance, fuel, and insurance from living within the box. The cost of food, clothing, and other normal expenses cut into the few remaining dollars. People in one of our political parties think the person earning 15 dollars should be saving for their retirement. They also say the medical expenses are paid by the employer. This is the USA, not Europe.

Now let’s go 200 miles south and 15 dollars can be stretched to a not comfortable but possible life as long as medical help isn’t needed. However, full time jobs are not as easy to find.

Four hundred miles farther south and their state legislative bodies think $7.50 is enough. In some of the rural areas it probably is.

The cost of living varies so greatly across America a Federal minimum wage of 15 dollar is unreasonable. Some state’ legislatures are dominated by their party’s tenets to the detriment of a large number of their residents. Millions of poor will never have a comfortable life because certain people never have to worry about getting enough to eat.

I’m a Deficit Hawk

I remember Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich worked together to put the economy on track, raise taxes, and reduce the National Debt to the point of disrupting the world’s banking system. They paid of all the 30 year bonds, most of the 20 year, and were making a dent in the 10 year. National banks around the world pleaded to go no further because they use the bonds as a reserve.

Some years ago I read a study about individual and corporate income tax rates. The study shows a rate up to 60% had little to do with a person’s spending and life style. Lower taxes increases management income through salary, stock options, and golden parachutes. It had little effect on operations at a rate below 40%. Those are effective rates and not one with thousands of deductions and loopholes. Bezos paid no Federal Tax and Buffet pays less than my wife and I.

Before the Trump tax cuts, multi-billionaire Warren Buffet said his effective tax rate was less than his secretary’s. He and many other billionaire’s have said tax rates are unfair.

President Biden has proposed a budget fixing the country’s problems but with a half-way increase in taxes. We need those fixes to help us catch up with the rest of he other advanced countries. We need the international 15% minimum corporate tax passed.

As a deficit hawk I had much rather see taxes on the super rich and wealthy corporation go up than increasing deficit and debt. We need the fix more than we need the rich to keep benefiting from lower effective rates than 99% of us. It’s wrong when they pay several percent less than me.

Good Idea or Bad

I think all of us who think President Trump is the worse, most corrupt, narcissistic President we have ever had should join those who thinks he walks on water (He knows where the rocks are.) to support their campaign for on-shoring. Trump and his butt-kissing minions have said they want to bring back manufacturing to America. Few of our medicines and other medical supplies are made here. Their current push is for medicine and medical supplies to be on-shored. The pandemic brought to the forefront how much is made in China, Europe, and India.

Republicans have pushed globalization for their business supporters. Long ago the idea became rampant as one manufacturer after another was forced to move more and more of their work to other cheaper countries. They trained people and shipped over American technology in hopes of producing far cheaper products and selling some of those products there. It was called the Wal-Mart effect because Wal-Mart pushed manufacturers to lower prices or lose shelf space. One manufacturer said he lost the Wal-Mart contract by less than a half cent per item on a product costing a few dollars.

This is a real dilemma for many Republicans and some Democrats who have supported off-shoring as a way to keep prices down and to get money from businesses and their lobbyists. As millions of Americans lost their jobs, we couldn’t wait to buy those cheaper products. Since our purchases are over 70% of our GDP, I doubt we will buy as much considerably higher priced American made products causing the GDP to drop. Remember, on-shoring was called protectionism and it was a chief cause of the Depression.

The Truth about the Corona virus

As of March 1, the Dow Stock index has fallen over 12% from its high a few weeks ago. Why? Currently we do not have massive numbers of people infected but we do have thousands every day flying into our airports and then out to the cities, towns and hinterland that have come from or through an infected area. Maybe they sat next to an infected person who didn’t yet show signs of infection. Mortality is 2.5 to 3%.

The President has no credibility so when he talks about the likelihood of Americans being spared from contamination nobody believes him. Appointing Vice-President Pence to oversee the pandemic is not going to reassure anyone. The administration says we have 30 million masks in storage for a population of 230 million. Morris Hospital as one mask for each employee, and more are on back order. The world is desperately short of masks with 3-M Company trying to make more as fast as it can. Most manufacturers are outside our borders.

Trump is right about one thing, it will burn itself out in a few to several months. In the meantime this is what could happen. One of my friends is planning a vacation with her family to Michigan in April. If Michigan is an infected state she won’t go. It means she won’t be spending money on lodging, food, gasoline, and other things which hurts Marriot, McDonalds, Exxon, and other businesses a little bit. It also hurts their suppliers, and the people working for them.

The car manufacturers would shut down to limit the spread among their employees. That would mean all their suppliers around the world couldn’t send their products so they would shut down. Imagine all the other businesses that might be affected. Yes, it probably will just last a few months but it might cut the country’s GDP growth down to less than 1% or maybe into negative growth., That’s why fear is cutting your IRA in half.

Good Idea Turns Bad

One of the organizations I support is the Citizen’s Advisory Board (CUB). CUB’s Executive Director David Kolata, and some well-meaning legislators are pushing the Clean Energy Jobs Act of 2019. It was designed to get more people into electric cars and more importantly put Illinois into a dream of 100% renewable energy. Now that the state has figured a way to have electric cars pay a road tax. Electric cars now must pay for the roads they use.

The other pillar is a frankly stupid idea that CUB has and with no business being involved since it isn’t in their purview. A goal of 100% renewable is a dream that will not be possible for decades. The dream is power would be produced during the day and the excess stored in batteries for use at night. We do not remotely have the technology to store enough power for use at today’s nighttime use or even compensate for cloudy, windless days.

Electric cars are supposed to be recharged at night from the renewable source which means battery storage. A million or more cars trying to recharge at night plus all the other uses would probably mean enough batteries to go to the moon and back. Again it is a stupid idea.

What we need is to keep and even build more of is nuclear power plants. Nukes should be used as a base load supplier. Their output can be reduced during sunny, windy days and increased for night charging and bad producing days. We need to work out a way to keep the nukes. We have to have a real clean energy policy in Illinois. Lockout the lobbyists and listen to scientists and engineers that have actual knowledge and aren’t putting money in campaign pockets!

Deficit and Debt Plank

15 Monday Apr 2019

The most critical and important plank in my “Chance for Sanity” party is our current national deficit of nearly a trillion dollars this year and twenty-two trillion debt. Before any of the other critical changes can be addressed our Country’s finances must be put in order or at least started. Fixing this disaster will need to be spread over all Americans. Cutting taxes may get people to vote for a person but it is on a track that ends at an abyss without a bridge across. My financial plank gives us the bridge.

An old adage says when you are in a hole stop digging it deeper. Every year we are digging it deeper. We must stop digging it deeper and start filling it in before we can address the other critical problems. Solutions for some of the other problems will require additional funding which would not be so disagreeable if the debt had not been allowed to accumulate in an effort to satisfy tycoons.

Reagan had cut taxes and the debt ballooned so he raised them. George H. W. Bush raised taxes
to reduce deficits and debt. Clinton raised taxes and almost eliminated debt. His budget had a $236 billion surplus to finish paying down the debt and fund Social Security when George W. Bush took office. When he left we had a $1.4 billion budget deficit. Obama couldn’t raise taxes because of the Great Recession recovery. Trump cut taxes and increased the deficit from $500 billion to almost $1 trillion and a debt now of over $22 trillion.

As much as I would like to start making payments to reduce the national debt, we first need to eliminate the trillion dollar deficit. Doing that will require increasing the income taxes from $2.9 trillion by at least 40% more to $4.1 trillion. The best way to raise that amount is to raise the top rate to 50% and adjust other rates higher while eliminating most deductions and exemptions. Another way is to bring the estate tax back to two million dollars. Reducing the deficit has to be the first priority. In 2018, we paid almost $290 billion in interest on the debt. Our 2018 deficit was 5.5% of our gross domestic product which was far greater than any of the other top 30 developed countries.

Most of our debt is owned by other countries, and much of that is owned by countries which might use it to extort us for concessions.

Additional taxes will be required to pay down the debt. It will take many decades to get us back to where our debt was before the Bush tax cuts. Other solutions to our many critical issues will require additional taxes.

FIFTEEN AN HOUR – NOT THE SAME

I was born and raised about 265 miles south of Joliet and we go back to see relatives a few times a year. My grand niece is a fifth grade teacher. Her school system is getting some support from one of the few coal mines in the state. The starting pay in her school is $34,702 per year. Starting pay for Minooka grade school is $42,073.

The pay scale for state workers is the same in Chicago as in Cairo. A state senator or representative is the same anywhere in the state. The Democrats in Springfield want to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour. In most of the upper part of the state $30,000 is going to get the wage earner off of any state aid but into food pantries or living at the parent’s home. Try raising a family on that much. Granted it will not get that high until 2025 and inflation will have raised the actual cost-of-living.

One proposal is for the minimum wage to be based on a geographical tier. The farther south a wage earner lives the less the minimum would be or the longer it would take to reach that $15 per hour. Both are sound and fair proposals since the living costs are less in the south end of the state. A fair living in northern Illinois is what is called living high off the hog in southern Illinois.

One complaint about a-shoe-fits-all approach is the businesses will have trouble earning a profit when the labor costs rise. The obvious solution is to raise prices a little. Most places can do that but a manufacturing business I brokered a deal on might not be able to compete. Others in the area are competitive because their labor costs are close to those in Indiana, Missouri, and Kentucky.

Will a tiered system for minimum wage be enacted? Maybe this is because the poor don’t contribute to campaign chests or are politically active. Two other reasons are pay for state workers. Tiering state workers would cause union unrest. I know of no state which does that but it would make good sense for Illinois. The other reason is if the legislature tiered the other workers, wouldn’t we think it was a great idea to tier our senators and representatives salaries?

One cost savings to the state should be a reduction in state aid to those making minimum wage. Savings would be partially in rent, food and other subsidies. I doubt any additional revenue will come from taxing the higher wage because it will probably be offset by a reduced net income from businesses.

With all the pluses and minuses involved, I believe we should fully support the raises and hopefully on a geographically tiered salary schedule.

Recently I was parked in Morris’ Jewel lot when the radio announcer discussed the closing of four American plants by General Motors. CEO Mary T. Barra said she was closing them because people weren’t buying cars made in those plants. I looked at the three rows of double lines of vehicles in the lot and noticed of the fifty plus vehicles, only three were cars. The others were SUVs and pick-ups. My primary vehicle is a Cherokee.

In our free market capitalism system, a responsible company should only manufacture what they can sell. Of the three cars, one was my 1999 Town car and I doubt the other two were built in this decade. The factories had not gone from full capacity to closing next year. They have already reduced production to meet falling demand.

Ford and Chrysler have already announced factory closings stretching out into 2022 for the same reason. We are not buying cars with good gasoline consumption but pick-ups and SUVs that often get half the car mileage. When the price of gasoline first went over $2.00 we demanded high efficiency (25 mpg) and bought them. Now we are used to $3.00 gasoline and buy vehicles with less than 25 mpg. If gasoline went to $5.00 we might buy high efficiency 40+ mpg cars or will the electrics be plentiful by then. That’s what Barra and other automotive CEOs are planning with their factory closings. They are moving us into the future now whether we want it or not!
