Is Today Any Different?

About twenty years ago I had a discussion with a retired couple from Cornwall, England. They lived in a tiny village owned by Prince Charles (now King Charles III) Somehow we got into students having to know the long list of Kings and Queens. We don’t teach the line of 47 Presidents in schools and we should.

Perhaps some history classes in some schools may teach an unsanitized history of the United States with all the warts and abscesses. My classes in high school and college (29 semester hours of history) in the 1960s skipped or whitewashed the terrible things we have done to people in what will become the most powerful country in the world.

Outside studies have shown me we killed at least eighteen of the twenty million people that lived here when the first Europeans arrived. We locked up all the people with Japanese ancestry in concentration camps in the northern plains states. They lost their homes, businesses, and some their bank accounts. Confederate Irregular General Nathan Bedford Forrest is credited with starting the Ku Klux Klan. Like minded Southerners killed thousands of non-white people.

We are responsible for the deaths of over one hundred thousand Indian children from across the country in schools. The schools were to make them into white people by destroying their culture, their language, cutting their hair and teaching them the Christian Religion.

Students need to learn those people who started our quest for independence were not always the pinnacle of honesty and morality. Only about twenty percent of us supported independence, about the same number wanted to stay English with the rest not caring.

Today’s situation would seem less of a problem if students understood we are getting better than we were. Ignorance is not a blessing.

True History of Freedom

I realize the media often has to be brief in their talk about a news item but in the case of the Emancipation Proclamation they should get it right.

When President Lincoln signed the document, he had to bribe the legislators with jobs, infrastructure, and that it did not include the Border States that were not part of the Confederacy. As the Union forces moved into the Confederate states, slaves left their homes and tried to follow the Union troops who didn’t always have supplies for them. An unknown number were killed when they couldn’t keep up or were caught stealing food from white landowners.

The document took effect January 1, 1863. The last large body of Rebel troops surrendered on May 26, 1865. After the war was over the Union troops were moved around the former Confederate states to impose martial law. Shortly after the troops moved into Southern Texas, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger signed an order to free the slaves.

However, the slaves in all of the United States weren’t freed until the XIII amendment was signed on December 12, 1865 by President Andrew Johnson.

Wouldn’t it be nice if people got their facts straight? Slaves were not legally freed until the XIII amendment freed them.

History Almost Repeated

As an amateur World War II historian I have wondered why critics and followers of Donald Trump could not see a close comparison of him and Adolph Hitler.

The invasion of the Capital Building was much like the storming of the Reichstag by Hitler’s brown shirts in his effort to take control of the government. Granted Hitler shared control of the mob he had incited and led instead of going back to the White House to give out Medals of Freedom to his golfing friends. On the other hand, Hitler could not have watched his followers on TV while resisting sending National Guard and Police from outside D.C.

Trump has followed the teaching of Hitler’s communication minister Goebels. His mantra was called “The Big Lie.” He said if you tell a lie often enough people will believe it. Trump has told tens of thousands lies, many over and over, until his gullible followers believed them. His most egregious one is the root of the violence in D.C., and around the country. He lost the election and the count shows many people voted for all the Republicans except him. It was enough to flip Georgia to Biden.

During the last few weeks of the war, Hitler decided the Germans weren’t fully committed to holding off the allies in the West and the Russians in the East. Hitler ordered the destruction of what we hadn’t bombed out. This had the effect of leaving little for the next government to work with. Trump has put through a similar policy of rules dealing with the defense, environment, interior, and others making roadblocks for Biden’s effort to normalize America.

Hitler went to jail after the Reichstag, will Trump? Unfortunately Hitler wrote Mein Kampf in jail and got became powerful.

History Can’t Repeat

Each morning I watch the BBC’s World News to get a picture of what happened around the world yesterday. They devote a minute to the past major events which occurred during that week. Recently it has shown America’s space exploits, Viet Nam, Hurricanes, 1960s Race marches, and other admirable and despicable events.

I am sure the invasion of the Capital will be one repeated year after year during the week in which January 6 falls. I hope the following week doesn’t reach the status of being a worthy news item. May nothing like the happenings of January 6 ever be repeated on BBC’s “Week in History” ever again?

Gloss Over Factual History

Remember people who got upset when we bombed someplace in South Vietnam, Iraq, or Afghanistan? Yes, it is extremely unfortunate to all those thousands of innocent civilians killed. Those were tentatively friendly or allies.

We all remember how historically important the Allied bombing was in defeating the German forces in World War II. We seldom bombed Germany until 1944. Before that time we bombed the conquered countries of France, Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg. In 1944, before D-Day, we bombed French cities and towns to prevent their use by the Wehermacht in getting to the beachhead. That bombing program alone may have killed over 60,000 French men, women and children. Thousands more died from tactical bombing and artillery. We don’t think about that so we gloss over that part of history.

After the Italians surrendered and the Germans kept going we bombed Italian towns and cities killing innocent people. We didn’t care.

We leveled German cities, killing hundreds of thousands in their homes. We learned how to create a firestorm when the British and we bombed Dresden with incendiaries. The updraft from the fires suffocated people in their cellars. It sucked people off their feet and into the inferno from blocks away. That lesson was the basis for our firebombing of Japan’s cities. The deaths in some cities were greater than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Oddly the bad guys killed a much smaller percentage of civilians by bombing than we did. When people really dig into history instead of glossing over and seeing what we want go see, it becomes almost worthless. Motivations for actions are a sign of the times. Think slavery and owners.

Day 28 and Counting

The day count reminds me of the Iran Hostage day count. That crisis may have been the primary reason Jimmy Carter lost his re-election try. That crisis didn’t affect people in this country. Trump is no Jimmy Carter and this crisis isn’t on the other side of the world.

Where is Ted Koppel to tell us the day count and what is going on each day?

Respect the Office

In the early 1960s, I watched a BBC News article showing Prime Minister Harold Macmillan addressing about forty people at some festival. They showed him no respect and I thought that could never happen here because American could always find enough things we like about a President. People still supported Nixon as he got on the helicopter for the last time. Those people who didn’t still appreciated many of “Tricky Dick’s” accomplishments.

I cannot remember, either through my readings or memory, a President who has been so disrespected as Donald Trump. The late night shows make a nightly comedy of the lies and ideas he has said that day. Their audiences roar with applause and cheers. The Democrats have pilloried him and now the Republicans, sensing weakness, have started to publicly turn against him. The Mueller investigation has exposed the corruption in the Trump administration, friends, family, business dealings, and in the President himself.

One independent organization tracks the number of lies, fabrications, and misrepresentations. They have listed almost 7,000 instances as of December 1. President Trump cannot resist being in front of cameras and telling a string of lies or putting out lies on social media.

Americans are supposed to separate the office of the President from the person in the Oval Office. How does one respect the office when the most incompetent, egotistical, narcissistic person imaginable is sitting behind the Resolute Desk? Most of the secretaries are just as unsuited for their positions.

A Prime Minister is out when the majority of the House of Commons loses confidence in their leader. I doubt Trump ever had it. How can we respect the office and not the man?

Repeating History

Many of us remember these words were said by a paranoid President. “I am not a crook! American deserves to know I am not a crook!” Richard Nixon was surrounded by loyal, decent people who committed crimes at his request or at the direction of his campaign or administration. A saying that must have been forgotten by some people today is: “It isn’t the crime it’s the cover-up that will get you.” Nixon and his immediate underlings had nothing to do with the Watergate break-in but the cover-up and investigations brought them all down. Most went to jail and Nixon resigned.

“There was no collusion,” and “I have done nothing wrong.” sounds a lot like President Nixon’s protests. Those statements come from a President who has no clue as to what is legal and may truly believe he can do nothing wrong, his family can do nothing wrong, and his friends can do nothing wrong as long as they are loyal to him. Unlike Nixon, Trump will viciously attack any former friend or associate if he thinks their loyalty is questionable. Like Nixon, Trump has a loyal following that will go over the cliff with him. They refuse to see the truth about a huckster.

Like Nixon, I suspect Trump may either resign or be kicked out of office. More likely he will announce in 2019 he has done all as promised and decline to run again. The latter is to stop congressional investigations before they get to him and his questionable finances.

Equality Finally

My schooling and books say General John J. Pershing, Commander of the troops in Europe during World War I. wouldn’t have spread his troops among the British and French Divisions. As usual history is written by the victors and glosses over the truth.

Pershing, like most of the Army, was racist. He ignored how the Black regiments had fought in the Civil War and against the Indians. They were considered unreliable so when Marshall Foch begged Pershing for some fresh troops, Pershing sent him all the Black troops he had. The French had thousands of Black troops from their colonies in Africa and the Caribbean. The French were glad to have them even if they didn’t understand French.

The American Black regiments fought very hard and won many individual and unit citations. After being treated as equals in France many stayed and married French women. Others immigrated with French passports to some of the colonies.

When World War II rolled around, Black Americans were put in logistics and many excelled in the Red Ball Express’s job of supplying Patton’s drives. Few of the millions fighting were Black troops. Even the ethnic Japanese got their own unit (442 Regiment) for a chance to make a patriotic reputation.

Equality didn’t come until Harry S. Truman mandated it. Now all colors of Americans can fight and die. A fine example of equality in the military is General Colin Powell. We could use more like him.

Republics and Democracies

This is in response to Larry Pottorff’s letter on democracy. The oldest democracy today is in London. In 1649, Charles I was executed by Parliament, starting a civil war, and Cromwell formed a Republic. He was a terrible dictator and after he died Charles II became King by act of Parliament. In 1721, under George I, England became a constitutional monarchy with a “Prime Minister” making the kings figureheads. A complete democracy came with 1918’s representation of the People’s Act tripled the number of voters. A republic didn’t work for England because people like to feel they have some control over their government.

Four democracies that morphed into what Larry would call Republics are Venezuela, Germany, Italy, and Russia. Chavez, Hitler, Mussolini, and Putin were all voted into office, took control of their legislatures through violence, controlled the media through intimidation and murder, and had control over the national police and courts. All four started with a small group of supporters and convinced a vocal and, sometimes violent, super minority of loyalists.

Three used the boogeyman strategy of pointing to an ethnic groups (Hitler-subhumans) (Chavez-foreigners and rich) (Putin-foreign governments) to get control of their people. Today’s nationalists in Europe are using the Syrian refugees as their foil. All required some group to scare their supporters. All convinced their people that they and they alone know what are best for them. All used tremendous egos, a huge thirst for power, and convincing lies to gain total control.

Mr. Pettorff’s hope that my “vast knowledge of History” would support his belief that a Republic is better than a liberal Democracy is not correct. Republics are more likely to go to war, to declare martial law, and to overreach their supporters.
