History, Iran, Israel, middle-east, politics

Those are the words of Fareed Zakaria who is a very insightful reporter on CNN. He sums up the hope and mistakes the administrations have made since former President Dwight Eisenhower’s CIA meddled in Iranian politics. Each administration since has felt the policy needed to be fine tuned while leading to today’s disastrous situation.

Most Americans do not know that Iranians are not Arabs which were the racial basis for the CIA’s policy. This was the time of the so called Brush Fire Wars around the World. The CIA’s meddling caused many of them so they thought they could control the Arabian Peninsula by having a strange white military power that could put down and rebellions or wars in the oil-rich Middle East.

Not everyone in Iran’s new democracy was interested in attaching themselves to either side of the Cold War so we got rid of the elected leadership and installed the hereditary ruler – The Shah of Iran. We trained his army in how to put down any dissent and moved the religious leader, who wanted to do away with the secular culture, to France.

One President after another kept up the façade that all was well in Iran until former President Carter’s morals pulled his support from the Shah. The religious minority was about to gain the support of the young and overthrow the government. The upper military and government people either fled or were killed. The new Anti-American allowed the Ayatollah Khomeini to return and become the religious and political leader of Iran. He incited an Anti-American fervor and policy which led to the taking of the American Embassy and Carter’s loss to former President Reagan. Carter had stopped supplying weapons to Iran so Reagan’s people worked out the guns for hostage deal. The deal depended on Iran holding the hostages so Carter could not claim the victory and win a second term.

This feeling of anti-Americanism and religious Shiah Muslim fervor created a regional problem for the United States and the Arab countries it was now friendly with. Whether we encouraged former President Saddam Hussein to invade Iran or it was totally his idea, we supplied some supplies and lots of satellite images of the Iranian positions and movements. It was Reagan’s way of revenge for the Embassy. Saddam lost but Iran lost hundreds of thousands of cannon fodder militia and trained soldiers. This created the need to use Arab insurrectionists to upset the political leaders of the Arabian Peninsula countries and of course, Israel.

When Iran was just getting into Refining Uranium, the major countries developed a treaty restricting how far Iran could go with the enrichment. It was working although their support of those working to create dissension in other countries continued. Former President Donald Trump pulled out of the agreement, enrichment shot past the agreed percentage. Trump’s verbal treatment of Iran’s leadership increased, Iran’s leadership worked to hurt Americas by reduced affection of its people to Americans. That is why they hate Trump and want to hurt him physically or his chances of re-election.

Iran is a great example of how the United States has not planned for the long term future. Ever since our leaders decided we should interfere with the little countries around the world we have put in dictators, tyrants, and killers. – All just to get our way for a few years.

Now We May Know the Truth

What do we know about President Trump killing Iran’s General Soleimani? Soleimani could be considered Iran’s Secretary of Defense because of his status and responsibility. After all the lies and confusion put forth by the administration, we may now know all the truth. First Trump decided to kill the Iranian last summer, not last week as he said. No embassy was in immediate danger and definitely not four as he said. Secretary of State Pompeo actually said the reason was Soleimani was within fifty miles of the Embassy. That’s the silliest reason since he had often been driven past the Embassy. The Secretary of Defense knows of no immediate threat to any of our Embassies. No administration person publicly said the impeachment was involved.

Why is this strike different than Bin Laden or any of the hundreds of drone hits? Those were all stateless individuals, meaning they were not attached to any country. Killing Soleimani is the same as their killing one of the White House Advisors or Generals. When an upper level person is killed on purpose, that is a declaration of war. Trump said Soleimani was a terrorist but their stated criteria of a terrorist is the same as what some of our armed forces and intelligence people do many times each year. Does that mean our people should be targets of other countries’ people we have killed?

Is it over? I doubt it. The missiles hitting our people on an Iraqi base were for the people. There is probably over a hundred ways to really hurt us and we wouldn’t know who did it or why. I bet Iran will be blamed for anything other than a natural disaster.

Iran versus Iraq

Far too many people think Iran would be a pushover like Iraq in the two wars we had with Saddam. They share a common border and a common religion sect controlling the current governments. Both are large oil producers but Iran has other businesses.

The difference between the two is stability. Iraq has little stability and Iran may have problems with their elected people but not with their religious elite. When we invaded Iraq, Saddam was a maniacal, paranoid Sunni leader who had kept control of the 66% of the country who were Shia.

In 1980 Saddam attacked Iran with our help. The war lasted 8 years costing his military several thousand troops. Iran lost about a million people. Saddam sued for peace after the last battle where his dug-in army ran out of artillery, mortar shells and ammunition after human waves by kids walking through the minefields. Behind the kids were militias followed by regular army, followed by elite guards units. They mowed them down and blew them apart but they kept coming. That is what their religion requires them to do to reach heaven.

Iran is 94% Shia and 5 % Sunni and does not have the weak military Saddam attacked. Iran has advanced high-speed silkworm missiles which might be able to overwhelm our Navy in the little Persian Gulf. They have purchased and upgraded their advanced air defense system with modern anti-aircraft guns and missiles.

Iran has 83 million people in the country and tens of thousands outside the country willing to die to defend their religious leader and country. Thanks to Trump’s bullying and prodding, few if any country will join us because they see him starting the conflict. If we are kicked out of Iraq, we lose a land base and Iran may gain additional supplies, financing, and troops.

Iran will not be a pushover or a short war.

I always wonder when America acts against another country where the intelligence came from and why the administration believed it. We blew up a powdered milk factory and the workers inside it because Israel said it was a chemical weapons factory. The administration went after Saddam Hussein because Vice President Cheney leaned on CIA analysis people to make a report saying Iraq had chemical and biologic weapons and was trying to build nuclear ones. None of it was true and some of the American media showed it wasn’t true. The European intelligence agencies said Iraq didn’t have any such weapons. The only country agreeing with the analysis was Israel who had been upset since Desert Storm didn’t do regime change.

Remember the students being mistreated and held as hostage in Grenada? The students weren’t aware of problems until our troops landed, so where did Reagan get the information? Over 3,000 bronze stars were given to people in the Pentagon who never left the building. Why? Was it to keep them quiet? I never heard any intelligence agency saying that the students were in danger, only White House speakers. Was it a coincidence that the invasion occurred immediately after 250 troops were killed in Lebanon?

So where did Trump suddenly get information he acted on to kill a man who is like Iran’s Secretary of Defense on the eve of his impeachment trial? It benefits Putin who gains influence in Syria, Iraq, and Iran.

Everything Donald Trump has done in his life is to make him look good or to divert attention from something bad he has done. He has the greatest ego, is the biggest liar, and the most paranoid of any President we have ever had, so we are justified in wondering why now. Secretary of State Pompeo was on the Sunday Morning shows and would only say we have information but he wouldn’t say what it is. Sounds suspicious to me.

No Gift to Iran

Let’s assume B.J. Warner made a lot of money but spent more than was made. After getting professional help all of B.J.’s accounts and assets were taken over by the company. After a great deal of negotiations, the company and B.J. come together in an agreement allowing B.J. to get the frozen accounts and assets back. However, B.J. didn’t keep the money but gave it to others. B.J. complied with the agreement on spending as the company wanted but didn’t use the money as the company intended. According to B.J.s thinking of August 11, when the company returned B.J.s money it was a gift from them and not B.J.s own money being released.

The long analogy is to explain how Trump and the other warmongers explain releasing of Iran’s confiscated funds. Granted some of the money went to organizations we didn’t approve of, but it did stop the problem of Iran building a nuclear bomb and that was the purpose. All the countries freed up Iran’s own funds and kept the interest those funds had generated. Much of those funds we had kept were for the purchase of fighter planes the Shaw had paid for but not delivered. Carter froze all the funds in our banks. The other countries froze the funds in response to the upgrading of nuclear fuels. No war was made against Iran.

Just as the B.J. analogy, nobody GAVE Iran money. Trump and others have misinformed and lied to get the uninformed and naive excited about having a disastrous war with Iran. Trump satisfied the warmongers by abrogating the agreement and baiting Iran. He is trying to start a war that will not stay there but will come home. Saddam found killing hundreds of thousands just means more want to die to beat the enemy.

Why does the administration not want to get into a war with Iran? How many readers remember the Iraq-Iran War? Saddam finally decided he couldn’t win after killing thousands of Iranians. Iraq set up a thick mine field in front of their trenches after the Iranians had stopped the Iraqi invasion. Iran didn’t want to lose more soldiers in trying to kick out the Iraqi troops so they sent waves of kids in to blow up the mines with their feet. After them were old civilians, followed by their regular soldiers, and then their elite guards.

The Iraqis used up their massive supply of artillery shells, mortar bombs, and ammunition. Iranians kept coming so the Iraqis fled before being overrun. Their religion was stronger than bullets and mines.

Do you think our naval commanders are going to blow up attacking Iranian missile boats full of babies and small kids? Imagine seeing parts of kids flying through the air on the 5:30 news! A ground attack is absolutely out and we are not going to go after their mobile missile launchers setting in hospital or orphanage yards. The world criticized Syria for doing the same thing. We lambasted Russia for shooting down an airliner in Ukraine but few of us remember we shot down an Iranian airliner, raining people into the Persian Gulf, several years ago. We blamed the Iranian government for letting them fly down an international air route.

The Navy calls the Persian Gulf a bathtub because it is too small an area for a battle group to operate safely. The Iranians have hundreds of anti-ship missiles that would give our Navy a very few minutes to just reduce the number of incoming missiles. The Iranians don’t blink to threats. Who will make the first mistake?

Iran Deal Not Bad

Let’s get real for once. The deal with Iran is the best deal six countries could get with Iran. Is it perfect — NO! If it was perfect for us as the naysayers would like, the Iranians would not have signed.

The United Nations Security Council just approved the deal 15 to 0. The General Assembly will probably approve it with less than ten no votes. The approval by the Security Council means the U.N. sanctions are going away. The European Community countries are already eliminating sanctions they made. Russia and China were two of the six and will start doing business deals with Iran in the near future.

Without the support (hammer) of the rest of the world, the multi-nationals will rebuild their commercial ties with Iran. India will go back to buying oil from Iran again. Our sanctions will have little effect on Iran once the rest of the world does away with theirs.

More than half of Iran is under 25 years old and they like America. By signing off on this deal we insure they will continue in that appreciation in coming years. The Iranians don’t like their government as demonstrated by the country-wide riots of a few years ago. The sanctions had nothing to do with the riots. The young people are ready for a real democracy and tired of a theocracy. They do not share the religious fervor of their elders. Let’s not be the feckless country the naysayers continue to want, but sign and regain the world’s respect.
