Changes Don’t Help Us

Yes, things do need to change but it can’t be done piecemeal. Social Security needs to be fixed along the lines of the Gingrich-Clinton proposal. An effort made by the far right wingers to kill Social Security and keep wages so low people have to depend on welfare to survive is unbelievable. They think those people should be putting money aside for retirement–low wages and saving for retirement is incompatible.

Allowing billionaires to buy the Presidency and Congress has to change. We elect people to go to Washington D.C. to do what is best for all of us, not just those who represent a few thousand far right or left wingers. The lefties want to help people that may not need so much aid and the righties want to help the rich by screwing the other 99%.

Remember the boom years of the 80’s and 90’s? Taxes were about 50% more and the economy was good to great. National banks around the world were afraid we would pay off the last of our Treasury Bonds (30 year was gone; 20 year would have been gone by 2003.) Taxes were reduced as soon as Bush got in and the red ink has been rocketing for 15 years.

Less tax means no money for fixing infrastructure. The economy isn’t trickling down because the top 1% has shut the valve tight. The middle class is just a sliver of its former size. The GOP is trying to convince us we are doing better, but we aren’t.

Clancy Drained the Swamp

In Tom Clancy’s Book, Executive Orders, he imagined what would happen if the President, Cabinet, Supreme Court, Joint Chiefs, and all the members of Congress were killed. Clancy forgot to kill off the lobbyists who are the real power. They spread millions of dollars and write many of the laws Congress votes on. The Supreme Court’s decision on Citizen’s United allows millions in “Dark Money” (unregistered and hidden) to find its way into pockets, campaign chests, and political organizations.

Clancy did not write how such an event would affect the billionaires who currently control our three branches of government. In the book, Clancy proposed the people who would run for Senator might hate it so much one or two terms would be all they could stand. Of course, each Governor would appoint the Representatives for that state so they would be political. Think of it, no existing empires to control new people so it would have to start all over again.

Trump’s swamp is real but the first thing he did was to deepen it by doing away with the ethics rules. Lobbyists and lawyers who fronted for special interests were chosen for cabinet posts and under secretaries.

Before the reader thinks the swamp is only in the Administration, think about how a retired high school coach and Speaker of the House can still be wealthy after paying three million to a blackmailer. When they retire, high paying jobs in banks, consulting corporations, and others awaits them assuming they voted right. Those in the Administration get offers in the same places.

Political Train Tracks

Before putting money into campaign chests became paramount, both parties used to work together for the good of the country. Occasionally a party might go off the tracks with a radical idea so far off the rail the other side couldn’t support it, but they usually found common ground for the country’s good.

Both ideologies used to find a place where moderates from both parties could see a place where the rails merged into one law. It meant that moderates could merge their ideals into one forming something both could live with. That is how Congress used to work before we voted out the moderates and voted in radicals who want to destroy governments and safety nets. When that happened the super rich of both sides (thanks to the Citizens United Decision) pumped money into the election process demanding the receipients do as their masters demand. Today we have many tracks but seldom do any of them merge on the horizon.

The parties used to have socials and games on weekends in Washington because governing meant 4 1/2 day work week. As the need to raise money became the greater need over legislating they have cut the number of work weeks and days to three. Some of the leadership may stay until Friday because their position and funding is secure. We now know they all leave the building to go to the phone banks each party has set up for pleading for more money.

Too often the rails do not seem to merge on the horizon but stay separated as we disappear into the setting sun.

No Good Choices

Image yourself as President in 2020 and the National Debt is over $26,000,000,000,000 and growing at over a $1,000,000,000,000 a year pace. What would you do? These are some of your choices.

Raise Taxes — Unless we are in a deep recession all taxes could be raised in yearly stages to pre-Bush tax cuts when the economy boomed. Only 14% of the companies benefiting from the recent tax cuts have passed any of the money through to their employees by either raises or one year bonuses. The others increased management salaries and benefits, bought back stocks, and increased dividends.

Cut Social Programs — Revise and/or reduce Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other safety net programs. A national health care program like Medicare from birth would be impossible.

Cut Military Expenses — Depending on world political stability, cuts here may be difficult. Several billion can always be cut without damaging the country’s security. Unfortunately, the V.A. costs will have risen significantly eating up the billions saved elsewhere.

Interest on the National Debt will grow as the Debt increases and the percentage rate increases due to the Federal Reserve’s need. Just like Greece, Italy, and others, we will be borrowing just to pay the interest.

The Republican’s have always been for tax cuts, no deficits, reducing debt, and cutting social programs. The Democrats have traditionally raised taxes to support new social programs.

The status quo will only increase the debt making debt the greatest National Security Issue. What would you do?

What Am I?

I get a lot of feedback on my opinions. Most are from the right but nearly as many from the left. I claim the center which is where a person should be with views toward both sides. I try to use facts as the basis for my opinions even when they are not stated.

I often call experts (not text, e-mail, FaceBook, Tweet, or any other son-verbal communication) to get information that I use to form my opinion. I have consulted physicians, astronomers, climatologist, military, senators, state and federal agencies, and friends with experience and special knowledge on a topic.

An example is when one climate denier wrote in that the sun was expanding and that was the reason for our climate getting warmer. I knew it was ridiculous but I talked with an astronomer at Adler Planetarium who laughed so hard he gasped for air. As most students in my 1960s high school science class knew, the earth’s orbit is about 93 million miles because of the oval orbit. It is an average of 94.5 and 91.4 million miles. We have gotten more accurate but the sun is probably the same size as when humanity left Africa.

I also use the World Almanac but not Wikipedia or any other subjective or fake social media sites designed to cater to those siloed people who are so easily manipulated. Another source is the people themselves. I try not to use President Trump as an official source because he seldom is right with facts and can change those facts around within hours. To him real news facts come from the script writers on FOX. Even then he screws those stories up.

The left doesn’t like my immigration stance and the right doesn’t like my stance on paying off debt before tax cuts. Seeing both sides of an issue is something Americans have forgotten how to do.

Famous Last Words

Over the many years I have been watching American politics I have seen people say many things they should not have said. Often these self-inflicting wounds have killed their political ambitions. I remember Governor Gary Hart saying he didn’t fool around and if reporters didn’t believe him they should follow him. One did and took pictures of him cavorting with some women on a boat called “Monkey Business.” It cost him the lead in the presidential primary.

Obama made an offhand remark about Pennsylvania people being gun and religious nuts or something to that effect t. It did not go over well. Hillary Clinton made some off-script comments that may have cost her the election. Senator Edmund Muskie made a derogatory comment about Canadians by using the word Canucks (That’s the name of a Canadian Hockey Team) that was twisted against him. It cost him the New Hampshire’s primary.

Of course omissions can sink a candidate, too. Remember when Governor Rick Perry forgot the fourth cabinet post he would eliminate. “Oops” was the famous last words from him.

Sometimes a president says something wrong or lies and is caught. Reagan’s comment on Irangate was beyond credibility causing him to publicly apologize (sort of).

President Trump seldom gets his facts correct or just makes them up as he adlibs. Perhaps his truest statement which I am sure will be used thousands of times is his story before this year’s CPAC meeting. I quote: “You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in.” How more honest can he be?

Deepening the Swamp

President Obama instituted a very unusual (in Washington D.C.) ethics policy for his administration. If a person was to work for him, they could not have been a lobbyist or a congressional staffer or special interest lawyer for over two years. This was because people were a lobbyist one day and the next day overseeing an agency they had been against the day before. The idea was to put people into positions that were less attached to outside money. Some waivers had to be made because of especially rare expertise. Obama made seventy waivers over his eight years, mostly during the finance fiasco. Each waiver was accompanied by a reason for the need.

One of the first things President Trump did was to sign an executive order decreasing the rules. He has already signed thirty-seven secret waivers without any reason given. That’s not draining the swamp he campaigned on, but deepening the swamp in Washington D.C. The EPA has the most conflicts with lobbyists and lawyers that represented businesses against the EPA. Now those people are gutting our environmental protections in favor of their former bosses. We are heading back to the good old days of freely polluting the air and water, and allowing banks to gamble with depositor’s money.

Trump just wants to throw out anything done during the Obama years and much done before. Where is a modern day Teddy Roosevelt and his efforts to control the rich and big businesses’ trampling of Americans? Maybe somebody like Biden, or Kasich, or Huntsman?

Need to Know

What do we need to know? Do we need to know that the White House is so chaotic that over 25 people have left and many more will go in a couple of months? Do we need to know that most of the Cabinet is incompetent and are owned by business and special interests? The media keeps us informed on all these issues and a myriad more.

Some people have literally stopped reading, listening, and watching the news because it scares them. I have never heard so many people talk about leaving the country until a new President is in office. Some even voted for Trump and then regretted it. A few of my friends are news junkies like me and are also getting burned out on the daily reports and leaks of mismanagement and back-stabbing.

News is addicting too many of us so last year was like Fentanyl to news junkies. This year is shaping up to give us an overdose. The question is how can an average voter make an educated evaluation of who to vote for if they don’t pay attention to the news. Citizenship demands being informed by real news.

My advice is to pay as much attention to local, state, national and international news as you can tolerate because it will shape your opinions and attitude. Please stay away from Russian websites, tweets and comments, far right and left commentaries, the internet, and if Sinclair Broadcasting gets WGN, add it to the list. If the news makes you physically sick, then carry a bucket!

Messy Economics

A recession is looming because recessions are always going to happen. Economies go up and the economies come down. When it will happen is the question. Just as in the Bible, a government needs to store up money during the good times to use during the bad times. That makes good fiscal policy, doesn’t it?

Why have the Republicans decided the Bible is wrong? When Ronald Reagan cut taxes and run up deficits, we were in a recession with very high inflation, high interest and high employment. The tax cut and the subsequent lowering of interest rates was sufficient to jump-start the economy. Later the taxes were raised to cut the deficit and the economy boomed.

When Bush II took office, the government was paying off the National Debt so future administrations would have some ammunition for future recessions. Bush came to office after the dot.com stock collapse but with a good economy. He immediately put us back into deficits by cutting taxes and then 9-11 shocked the economy. In 2007, the Great Recession hit so taxes couldn’t be raised and some more were cut increasing the deficits and debt while trying to jump-start a terrible economy.

Now it is 2018, the economy is overheating, companies are awash with money, the Fed is selling bonds they bought to float the government rescue, and the Fed is raising rates from near zero. Instead of reducing the deficit and debt, Congress has emptied the ammunition storage so we have nothing to cut when the recession hits. They could have raised taxes to pay down debt and store up some shots for the upcoming recessions. Companies now have more money and the government has less. Our quiver is empty so hold on when the next one hits!

Ending Gerrymandering

Small states with only one district for U.S. Representatives do not have a gerrymandering problem. With only one district, no party can ensure an outcome by deciding where boundary lines are fixed.

Illinois could solve our gerrymandering problem in much the same way. Some of us remember the “bed sheet ballot” of the 1960s when state districts couldn’t be fixed in time. It simply meant everyone who was elected represented the entire state and not just the political and monied few in each district today.

Imagine how our 18 representatives might vote if they were responsible to all 12 million of us. Article one; section two of the U.S. Constitution doesn’t require special districts. It just specifies the number of representatives.
