Guidelines for Some

        Some of us break the law by going a few miles an hour over the speed limit or maybe forgetting to turn headlights on when its sprinkling., We know it is wrong to go through a red light or stop sign because it is a dangerous and definitely breaking the law, just like driving 70 in a 45 zone, or driving impaired. The average American is going to agree with what we might call a guideline and what is a law not to be violated without serious consequences.

            For a fast growing number of Americans the serious laws seem to have become guidelines which they feel do not apply to them. At least four people who were confirmed to be Supreme Court Justices lied during their hearings. Every year hundreds of local, state and federal official are convicted on a variety of crimes and usually given lighter sentences than the average American would get.

            Hundred of people committed insurrection on January 6, 2021 because their President told them to do it. President Donald Trump just pardoned them because “they did nothing wrong.” Thousands of Republicans were shocked at what happened for a few days or weeks before toeing the line put out by a lying ex-President.

            We have never had a President who strayed so far from the normal Presidential behavior. We have never had a President whose ego is so great he thinks the laws don’t apply to him. Trump’s scams include selling boots, Bibles, and other items to fund his election when it actually went into his pocket or the cyber currency that goes to the Trump family entity which he oversees. The cyber currency is definitely illegal for him to sell.

            The Constitution in his mind is a series of guidelines which he can violate as he wishes. He has already decided the Fourteenth Amendment is not applicable today. Does he think the Twenty-second Amendment doesn’t apply to him? His dictator friends are his idols and his rabid supporters would agree.

        In today’s political climate the first order we think about is President Donald Trump’s order to send the gang members to an El Salvador Prison. A judge said to stop but the flights continued in spite of the court order. That is a minor but first stop in defiance of the laws of our country.

            The illegal order I am worried about isn’t a civil or criminal order that concerns me, it’s the ones he gives to his hand-picked leaders of our country’s military. Yesterday he hinted he could take Canada or Greenland when he wanted. As a student of history, in particular World War II, I remember Adolf Hitler hand-picked the leaders of his general staff. The previous ones had advised against an aggressive military strategy where Germany would start the conflict.

            The German people and military had been told over and over that the Arian Race was the best and Germany was the greatest nation. It was Germany’s destiny to fulfill that destiny. During his last inaugural speech Trump talked about manifest destiny and the artificial border with Canada. He has said Greenland is closer to the United States than to its home country Denmark.

            The question is would our General Staff who swore an oath to our country say no? Would Trump replace them with Generals who would comply with his order to invade both places? We know his ego does not allow for dissension of his wishes and dreams. He has just said he is the leader of the world’s most powerful country and economy and he should be able to do what is best for America and the world. If the Congress and Courts can’t control him, will the Military?           

I Am Confused Too

        A great saying that is applicable to many situations is “If you aren’t confused then you aren’t paying attention.” I have been paying attention and I am greatly confused.

            Former President Donald Trump has stated many times that “Nobody is above the law” so why does he keep saying he shouldn’t be on trial because he is campaigning?  Six or seven years ago he said “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn’t lose any voters.” After both of those statements why does he not want trials to free himself?

            Twice he has said he wants a quick trial so he can campaign. Of course, the longer he is indicted or in a trial, the more money the duped supporters will send him. Another charge which those donations will create is using that campaign money to pay his attorneys. Those attorneys are doing everything they can to delay all the legal proceedings into next year or later.

            His attorneys say he is in trouble because his previous attorneys told him he had won and needed to do everything he could to prove it. He believed them which got him into doing wrong. Trump’s history with lawyers goes back to around forty years. Delay, delay, delay was his first direction and taking their advice was seldom, if ever, taken. Maybe that’s why they have trouble getting paid for their time. His current ones are getting paid up front! He says one thing and tells his attorneys to do differently while conning millions of his followers to give him money!

            I am really confused because I pay attention to what Trump and his lawyers say. When the evidence is overwhelming, the defense is always to delay as long as possible.

President Isn’t a Dictator

I recently saw a great movie about Vice-President Cheney called “Vice.” News junkies will see little about his political life they don’t already know. It detailed how he rose from Rumsfeld’s intern to being the most powerful man in our government.

The critical scenes showed how he became George W. Bush’s Vice-President. His previous years in Washington D.C. taught him how to be the vicious, manipulative person who managed our government for six years. How he kept “Junior” from running the country and knowing what was being done in his name for six years. When Bush figured it out he benched Cheney and fired or by-passed others in Cheney’s Cabal.

Cheney’s ability to do what he wanted comes from a far right wing theory that says Article II of the Constitution gives the President almost total power to do as he wants. It is called the Unified Executive Authority. Where, when and who came up with this theory I don’t know but it made Cheney the most powerful person since FDR. Cheney and his cabal falsified evidence to create public opinion for war and found a government lawyer named Woo to come up with a legal opinion making it permissible to “interrogate” captives with torture.

Many of the cabal are back in power in the Trump administration. One is John Bolton, Trump’s security advisor, who has some influence on him. Former Chief of Staff Kelly said he should not be judged on what he did but what he stopped from happening. Others have quit because they couldn’t break the law.

The President just said he has the Executive Authority to build the wall without Congressional approval. Both of the Supreme Court Judges he nominated before believe in greater presidential power than has been used prior to Trump. If the Supreme Court was asked for a judgment on presidential power, at least two would vote for the expanded use.

The founding fathers wrote the Constitution limiting the power of the President. They were afraid a President could be a king and they just got rid of a king. Congress limited the army to a maximum of 5,000 so the state militias could maintain their independence. It is the reason why the President is a civilian. The President has often talked of “His Generals” being loyal to him. Active and retired generals should be loyal to the country not the President. When they quit he said, “They didn’t do anything for me.”

Go see the movie and imagine any President with Unified Executive Authority.
