In an usual twist of this blog I would like to talk about great places we have been and encourage readers to get in their vehicles and see them while they can. The “while they can” is two fold. One is Climate Change is in the process of destroying the sites and biodiversity. The other is mobility although I must say we were never the hikers that would have exposed us to greater views.

As a geographer and historian I recommend Civil War Battlefields. The best would be those around Chattanooga, Tennessee, Antietam, Vicksburg, and Gettysburg. I would like to go back to Gettysburg to ask the experts what would have happened if Meade had let Lee have the Ridge and then surrounded him without food, water, and ammunition. The war could have been over much earlier saving tens of thousands of lives. Go see the aquarium and butterfly collection in Chattanooga.

We have been in most of the National Parks in the lower forty-eight states so I recommend Yellowstone, Everglades, Big Bend, Zion, Arches, Grand Canyon, Crater Lake, Death Valley, Mount Rushmore (better before the modernizations were added.),Mesa Verde, and Carlsbad and Mammoth Caves. Those are the “Do Not Miss!

Other places are the Pink Coral State Park in Colorado (dust sized pink sand dunes), Roosevelt National Park for Buffalo (although the Elk and Buffalo Refuge in Kentucky’s Land Between the Lakes is often better for real eye ball to eyeball viewing.) Great Sand Dune National Park, Pike’s Peak, Florida Keys, Rocket Launch, Museums in Washington DC, Williamsburg, House Tours in Natchez, Mississippi, Meter Crater in Arizona, the Real London Bridge at Lake Havasu, Okefenokee Swamp, Yosemite, Kings Mountain, Bad Lands, Monument Valley and the Air Force Museum in Dayton, and of course Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. You can go under the Falls in Tunnels.

We have never done a Bed and Breakfast because it is uncomfortable to be in someone else’s home, or staying even in a relative’s home much less a total stranger’s. Of the couple hundred of places we have stayed, we recommend the duplexes overlooking the Ohio River on the cliff in Cave-In-Rock Illinois State Park with a cafe across the lane, the Malanga in Mobile (Great story), Cabins in the Keys, in North Cabins of Fort Stock, Texas, The View in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in Oljato-Monument Valley, Utah (second and third floors have terraces and Navajo Food Restaurant owned by the tribe).

We liked Zoos in Milwaukee, San Diego, Atlanta and Washington DC but seeing “caged”
animals became a turn off. A safari in Africa would have been nice. Oh, Yes, I forgot the Australia Zoo North of Brisbane (Allowed to pet the creatures).

Never wanted to be on a ship with a few thousand of my best friends so we have rafted the Yellowstone River during a very white water, boated the Bayous in Louisianan and the Okefenokee Swamp in a small guided tour boats. We have ferried the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, Puget Sound, Long Island to Groton, and most exciting was Swash Inlet to Ocracoke Island (we were the center car, with the rocking five feet up and down and four feet bow to stern – we were hugely lucky in our position), we took a small boat fishing Florida Bay for sharks (great jaws story), and whale sightseeing tour in Monterey Bay in California. Additionally a small ship to the Great Barrier Reef and a submarine in the reefs.

I like to drive in real mountains on exciting roads and we have been on big roads with several thousand foot drop offs with wrecked cars below. We were the first one through and early heavy snow was on one side of a mountain and dry on the other. We drove Pike’s Peak with 75 curves up and 75 down with a ranger checking flatlanders who rode their hot brakes, and hundreds of other miles that flatlanders would creep on. My million plus miles go from -270 feet to +14,110 feet in elevation.

My advice to all Americans is put down all your devices and go see America. Go to the Smokey Mountains before seeing the Rockies and Sierra Mountains. See our volcanoes and Western National and State Parks. Meet the locals in little cafes and over breakfast at your hotel. People love to talk about their home area. Stay away from franchise food and experience local cuisines. Ask the Hotel staff for ideas and not your device. Drive through big cities and stay in the small ones and towns. Look out the car windows and see life. Maybe be only inches from a bison or see a cougar running across the road, or stop for a herd of deer, elk, or antelope standing in the road. Maybe you might be lucky enough to see a black or grizzly bear or a moose. We did motor a small boat through alligators and shark infested water.

Memories and pictures will be enjoyed for the rest of your life. It is disappearing fast so spend the time and money now. Experience Real Life!

Harris Wins the Popular Vote

I predict Kamala Harris will get six million more votes than Trump but I don’t know if the Electoral College allows her to win. The prediction is because the Democratic nominee for the last seven of eight Presidential Elections got the most votes. Bush II got three million more than Kerry. Now we all know getting more votes doesn’t mean winning as long as the ancient idea of 538 people deciding who wins.

Here’s who won popular vote and by how many millions: Biden by 4, Hillary Clinton by 3, Obama by 5, Obama by 10, Gore by 8, and Bill Clinton by 8 and by 5.

See, it is a dead bang certainty that Harris will get more votes but she needs to pick up most of the so called battleground states. Those are Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nevada, Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina. Poll averages as of August 21 has Trump leading in Arizona by 0.2%, Nevada by 1.2%, Pennsylvania 0.2%, North Carolina 1.2% , and Georgia by 1.8%. Harris leads by 1.8% in Georgia and 2.0% in Michigan. All are well inside the statistical error. The pressure is really on in those states because the winner will probably win with a majority of less than 10,000 in each state.

Currently the reliable states give Harris 208 votes and Trump 219 with toss-ups having 111. The winner needs 270 no matter how many millions more popular votes Harris will get.

A real democracy means the majority of the people decide their leader but not here. We really are no different than many other countries with the majority party picking the country’s leader. We need to make elections fair and honest by getting rid of the Electoral College!

His Own Words

Former President Donald Trump has actually made a correct statement about him being tried and found guilty of committing thirty-four counts of lying on his state income tax returns. He said “If they can do it to me, they can do it to you!” If he had merely paid Stormy Daniels and left the matter alone, he would not have committed a crime. The axiom which came from Watergate is “It’s the cover-up that gets you” definitely applies to Trump’s crime.

The question is what sentence should Trump get for his crime. The judge can give him up to four years and not in the Oval Office. He could take into account his age and obvious mental deficiencies. Continuing to berate a judge that is about to sentence you shows a lack of common sense and mental capacity. He could get a thousand or more hours of picking up trash in parks or along highways. He would be the one working in an orange jumpsuit. The people around him wearing coats and ties would be his Secret Service guards.

Many New Yorkers have been found guilty of committing the same crimes and were locked up for years. I would think most people would consult their CPA or attorney before trying to write off bogus expenses. Trump has said nobody gets tried for this business expense. It is fairly common in New York and the payoff was personal, not his business.

Should Trump be locked up is an easy answer since he said many times that Hillary Clinton should be locked up because, “Nobody is above the law.” Should those words be used by the judge when giving the sentence?

Twenty Percent

Imagine if things had gone differently in the Pacific Theater in World War II and we had to have a negotiated peace with Japan. For peace we would have had to give up all the land West of the Continental Divide. Afterwards the Japanese would have overtly moved people into the remaining eighty percent getting citizenship, starting or buying businesses, and moving into houses and apartments, This would embed them into society and start the change of our culture while keeping their own. After some time they would be putting Japanese citizens into Congress and the Senate and possibly the White House.

If this sounds preposterous, it is exactly what President Vladimir Putin is doing in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Georgia fought Russia without any help and lost two whole states. In the other eighty percent live about one-hundred-thousand Russians of varying economic status. Some came to avoid being drafted to fight in Ukraine while others brought lots of money to buy into businesses. Moldova has the same situation except the Russians took over without much of a fight since Moldova has little military might.

If Putin is allowed to keep Ukraine’s twenty percent they soon would be increasing their infiltration. The Ukrainian President before Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a Putin dupe. Millions of Ukrainians forced him out of office. He fled to Russia.

As long as Putin is fighting in the Ukraine he will not be looking at any other former Soviet State. Several of them are now NATO. Maybe Putin will not use his military and invade but use his Cyber troops to destroy their will to resist his having his people put in office. [Cyber troops are teams dedicated to swaying and manipulating public opinion through coordinated internet and social media campaigns organized by governments, powerful parties, or corporations.] Think about his Cyber successes here and in Europe.

Poke the Bear

No, this isn’t about Russia that traditionally is called a Bear but Israel. An old adage is don’t poke a bear because its reaction won’t be pleasant. The moral is to think before acting and think what the results could be. Sometimes the reaction seems like an immediate mistake but will actually get the long term desired result.

Hamas poked the Israeli Bear hoping to get the desired backlash of death and destruction to the people in Gaza. Around the Arab world the people are protesting by the hundreds of thousands in their capitals. How can their leaders stay in power and work with Israel? Saudi Arabia and some other Arab countries were opening diplomatic offices with Israel and negotiating trade relations.

If Hamas gets the Israeli army to invade the Palestinian civilian deaths will skyrocket creating more dissent causing problems for Arab and Israeli leaders. History shows urban warfare is a disaster for both sides – think Stalingrad or our misadventure in Iraq.

Continued bombing of apartment buildings kills civilians which generates greater dissent and pressure for other organizations like Hezbollah to join the war. They have over 160,000 missiles to fire at Israel and the army should it invade Lebanon. The last time Israel went in they pulled out after a couple of months. They claimed victory but it was a bloody stalemate. It would be much worse this time because Hezbollah has many more well-trained troops and much more Iran-supplied equipment designed to fight Israel’s army and air force.

Hamas poked the Bear and hasn’t yet got all the results they wanted but those results may be imminent. So far, the PLO on the Eastern side has just been protesting but if all three organizations gang up on Israel it would be very bad for the bear.

Can’t Support Him

Don’t get me wrong, I have never liked past Vice-President Mike Pence. If the polls were correct he would not have been re-elected as the Governor of Indiana. Many believe he messed up the state’s finances to prove he was fiscally conservative in order to run for President after his second term. He was chosen to be past President Donald Trump’s Vice-President for potential help with the religious voters.

Pence is one of those who beats religion into others and believes that religion is his Christian belief and not any other sect or belief. Our country was founded on separation of church and state but Pence sees it as an impediment to his beliefs and ambitions.

Another reason is his complete support of Trump up to January 6, 2020. Yes, it is the V.P.s job to support his boss but I have not heard of any other dissent and there were many instances where he could have advised against Trump’s activities.

One last reason is Trump’s own reported words, “You are too honest”. How can the vast majority of Americans support someone who is “too honest”? Does that mean he is dishonest in some amount and honest on other accounts? How can those who wonder how people who supposedly live off their salary get so rich and have a very suspicious lifestyle?

Where will a “too honest” person go for a job after their political career is over as Pence’s is. He will probably go to some right wing Religious University or think tank sponsored by the Far Right. Don’t worry, all his pensions will keep him in caviar.

Letter to the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce

My first time in San Antonio was when the Alamo was enclosed in a case of scaffolding. We stayed in the historic hotel across the street. We had requested and got a room on the Alamo side. We took the river cruise during that Christmas vacation so the banks were completely lit. We bought some items in the Mexican mall. We toured the old missions and dined the local restaurants. It was an enjoyable part of our two week road trip.

Our second visit was not enjoyable at all. The Alamo had been turned into a botanical park destroying the feel of the site. Several of the people I conversed with while waiting to be herded around thought a bulldozer should be used to put the Alamo back to its historic importance. A neighbor just returned from San Antonio’s visit to see some friends. They went to the Alamo to see the flowers and park; but not the purpose of the object of the memorial.

When we stayed in the hotel the second time it must have been close to our first room. The Gaudily lit carriages at night enhanced the recreational touristy feel of what should have been a feeling of a heroic but misguided historic event. We have made our views felt to many others who have made their visits to Texas avoiding a San Antonio stay.

Incidentally, the traffic in the area was the worst I have ever driven in including rush hour in other major cities.  Perhaps turning the surrounding streets vehicle-less would help. I would also suggest turning the Alamo into a historical monument with several re-enactments each year and tearing out the floral garden and the herding system with lines. I missed seeing any respect!

We Need a Walter Cronkite

The quality of news dissemination today is a shadow of its heydays of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley and a few others told the news as it happened and did their editorial at the end of the half hour. They often wrote their own scripts and edited the other reports for accuracy and time. The scripted talking heads giving out the corporate agenda didn’t exist then.

Now the news is designed to be a profit center so it is slanted to target an audience and given by people who have little gravitas. Even a low level news junkie can spot skewed reporting or partial reporting which causes misinformation. The Fourth Amendment was added to the Constitution to investigate and report the news to the public. Watergate was a great example of real reporting. Reporting Trump’s antics was for entertainment factor, not news. Greater number of viewers means higher bottom line.

Today we have millions of people who are addicted to watching Fox News and News Nation. They are designed to cater to their viewers leading them farther from truth and reality. In addition to those outlets we have podcasters who create conspiracies which are then repeated by other podcasters and cable media. No wonder so many Americans are warped.

News reporting today has become a profit source and part of the cost-cutting means replacing experienced reporters with millennial novices. Journalism should be an advocate for truth and honesty and not more profit so some billionaires can get richer.

CIA Museum

The Central Intelligence Agency just opened a museum citing their successes and failures. Supposedly it has their mistakes, too. I wonder if it has the following failures and mistakes.

The earliest failure I remember is their attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro by the most incompetent invasion in history. I did a written ten page paper on this while I was in grade school. No wonder John Kennedy never trusted the CIA after that debacle.

The CIA supported Ayatollah Khomeini comfortably in France before going back to Iran.

Even more convoluted is Panama’s Manuel Noriega who the CIA helped to become the transit manager for drugs coming from Columbia’s drug lords to the United States. The CIA wanted to keep track for some reason. When he got too involved and made millions while President, they got our military to invade and arrested him.

How many National Leaders of countries we didn’t like were killed by the CIA. I once read a long list of attempts to kill Castro including poison and an exploding cigar. In 1970 we overthrew President Allende Gossans of Chile to put in Pinochet Ugarte. Allende supposedly killed himself. Over 3,100 people disappeared during Pinochat’s rule but the CIA kept him in power until they got too much heat from the President and Congress. We will never know how many more.

We have a habit of getting rid of a leader we don’t like and then finding out our new pick is much worse. Power corrupts and we give people absolute power to haunt the CIA’s decisions.

On, don’t forget their intelligence on Iraq’s nuclear and biologic weapons. They don’t deserve all the blame since Vice President Dick Cheney put a heavy finger on the editing of the report to former President George W. Bush.

Alec Baldwin Arrest

08 Wednesday Feb 2023

Arresting Alec Baldwin for the death of Halyna Hutchins is ridiculous. The person who was responsible for her death is the armorer and she was the armorer. She was the only person who was supposed to be putting bullets in the revolver so she actually shot herself.

Saying Baldwin and others are responsible for Hutchins’ screw up is a waste of taxpayers’ money and court’s time. The actor and others had no reason to believe she had put real bullets and blanks in the same box and then in the revolver.  The District Attorney says lots of people should have checked. Using that idea, then every actor should check if the horse is gentled, the saddle is tight, and doesn’t have a rattlesnake in the saddlebags. Should the actors check if the logs in the fireplace are secure before it is lit?

The only person to do this is striving for publicity and looking to try for a higher office. She probably wants to be Arizona’s Attorney General or even governor. What a waste of time and money!
