Wear A Mask

I keep hearing people say the first amendment says they don’t have to wear a mask if they don’t want to do so. The Morris Menards has a sixteen square foot sign in front of its store making it very clear if the shopper doesn’t wear a mask they can’t come in. They have a person stationed by the gates to make sure.

Using the same argument, restaurants post “no shoes, no shirt, no service” signs which people have obeyed for years. Surely, seeing some big hairy chest while eating is less important than the possibility of getting and spreading a killer virus to others.

A person’s right to do something that isn’t banned by law ends the moment their right interferes with another person’s right. To think otherwise is just stupid. If a person doesn’t want to wear a mask in their vehicle, in the parking lot, in their house and yard, or in the middle of a field, that’s fine. If they like to walk or run on the street, sidewalk, or trail and are likely to encounter another person they should wear a mask or practice social distancing. They should wear a mask in apartment halls.

It is a person’s civic duty to keep from spreading a deadly virus or even a regular cold. It is selfish, inconsiderate, and un-American to aid in catching and then spreading the virus. I wonder when the law enforcement people will connect a person spreading the virus to another person who dies from it and calls it a felony!

Oh, Tom Hanks and his wife caught it in February and they keep getting their anti-bodies amount tested. They are declining rapidly which may mean they can soon get it again. Tom was on TV advocating the wearing of masks.

Stop Unintelligent Voters

Donald Lattin of Shorewood listed nine items which he says all Democrats support and I must be a Democrat and brain dead. As an independent I think we should have open primaries so I can vote for the best in any party.

Donald makes it sound as if all Democrats have a herd mentality. As Will Rogers once said, “I don’t belong to any organized party, I’m a Democrat.” Just because a Democrat gets some media coverage and a few supporters doesn’t mean millions of others agree. Donald’s list is such an example. But if people continue to believe the lies, fantasies, and conspiracies spouted on the crazy websites and by Trump, they will never know the truth.

1.)  What’s wrong with free health care when we aren’t even in the top twenty healthiest countries? — All of which have national health care cheaper than ours.

2.)  I support free tuition for the first two years of junior college with at least a C average.

3. & 4.) I have yet to meet a Democrat who wants an open border. Or elimination of ICE.

5.)  Sixteen year-old voters — We should keep all people from voting if they don’t know what is true and what is a lie.

6.)  The real green plan doesn’t mention guns but it does cattle. They are a poor usage of scarce resources in an expanding population and climate change.

7.)  Sanctuary cities wouldn’t be needed if we didn’t keep messing up their countries. We started the gang problem by exporting them from Los Angles.

8.)  A very small population wants to defund or eliminate police.

9.)  Removing statues is a fad. Surprise is Senator Lindsay Graham said, “It may be time to realize the past!” He is up for re-election.

Stirring the Melting Pot

We have a cultural problem in this country and I don’t know if anyone knows how to fix it. We have struggled for decades to solve it with no solution in sight. One way not to fix it is by reducing or defunding police budgets just because of a few bad actors. This isn’t Japan or some European country where people are civil and don’t commit violent crime or carry guns. Here people carry guns with too many using them in committing crimes.

Sub-cultures develop within larger cultures and within some ethnic groups crime becomes commonplace. When that happens, people outside the larger culture start to believe all those within the larger culture are criminals too. When the culture can be easily identified by a skin color, demonizing all of them becomes easier. Once that line is crossed it is difficult for people to cross back over. Police and state’s attorneys are no different than anyone else. Once they become deeply involved in trying to arrest and convict people of the sub-culture, they look at all those of the same color or ethnic as being suspicious.

How to make a permanent change in this conditioned attitude in people and law enforcement will involve the people of all larger cultures working to eliminate the criminal sub-culture. If the subculture is heavily into drugs and guns, then the larger culture needs to totally commit to ending the criminal activity by intensive social pressure or helping to jail them.

Protests in and of themselves are baby steps toward solving the dilemma. Maybe the solution is for the larger culture to actively end the sub-culture’s activities.

Save the Party

The Republican Party is in danger of being severely damaged this November by continuing to follow the egocentric and incompetent President. He is losing his base and when that happens the party’s down ticket suffers.

John Bolton’s book presented a few new facts about Trump and his minion’s incompetence. They fear the President if they don’t fawn over him and protect him from criticism. Bolton details Trump’s lack of knowledge and ability. His erratic self-promotion at the expense of America is now becoming a liability.

Conservative stalwarts of the party are starting to criticize and fall away from him. With the scent of blood in the polls, many real Republicans are looking for a way off the Trump parade. Even Pence and McConnell are publicly going their own way.

His continued mismanagement of the virus has caused and continues to cause tens of thousands of deaths and millions of unemployed Americans. Vice President Pence and their science advisors tell us to wear masks but Trump says it is up to the local officials which he then criticizes for their decisions. It is the same thing he did in March and April when he said he would supply PPE, then said the Governors should, he would, and then abdicated on the problem.

Republicans have a history of not trusting the leaders of North Korea, China, and Russia since they are enemies, not having a bro-romance as Trump is having. These foreign leaders know how to manage him and have gotten all they want. Real Republicans are upset over his compliance.

Sooner or later Republicans will see they have tied themselves to a racist, lying, egocentric man who will leave a scorched earth party. At a time when the white base is a shrinking minority, Republicans are supporting an anvil, not a conservative anchor.

Dictators Abound

The news media has not done a great job of showing the American people what has been occurring in the rest of the world’s leaderships. The pandemic has not only absorbed our media but also most other countries.

We have watched President Recep Endogen change Turkey from an army protected secular government to one tilting heavily towards a Muslim one. He fired the secular generals and put loyalists in control. He changed the constitution to allow him greater power and a longer term in office. He has picked the Kurds as his bogeyman (see 1930’s Germany and Jews) to focus his supporters against a common enemy. Disagree and you are fired and/or imprisoned.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was an early protester against totalitarian government, but after coming into power ten years ago, he has ramped up his power. His first bogeyman was the Syrian refugees. The pandemic has allowed him to increase his authoritarian rule by taking almost open-ended control of all government functions. The European Union has tried to slow his growth but Poland’s President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki have his back. Both are able to protect each other since EU Rules require consensus.

Nationalism breeds dictators. Brazil and Philippines are just two of a growing number of countries being led by want-to-be dictators. All have either taken over the opposing media like Russia or denigrated it like Trump. A dictator requires one friendly media outlet to disseminate their propaganda. Fox news is the outlet for people who want to control America. Trump’s use of the Defense Production Act (part of the War Powers Act) is similar to what other dictators have used.

To Buy or Not To Buy

12 Sunday Apr 2020

To buy or not to buy, that is the question. Is it better for a state to buy emergency medical equipment by bidding against other states or for the Federal Government to purchase them at a lower price? The obvious answer is for the Federal Government to maintain price control by being sole buyer and having used Presidential powers to create new manufacturers.

As a news junkie I watch Trump as much as I can tolerate. I have heard him say he would use the Government’s reserves to give to the states and buy more when needed. They should not complicate things by trying to buy supplies themselves. Then a few weeks later he says it is the states’ responsibility and not his. Then later, he says the states are running up the cost by bidding against each other and he will buy for them.

Then his president-in-waiting son-in-law says the Federal Reserve is for the federal governments use only. That is why the Illinois treasurer had to pay 3.5 million for items at a Dwight McDonalds which would have been much less if FEMA had been buying all the supplies. Other states weren’t willing to pay that much.

How can people think President Trump is doing a good job when he constantly is shown to be mismanaging the effort and contradicting his own expert team? He pushes an unproven drug because Rudy Giuliani tells him it will stop the virus. The question I want to know – is Giuliani lobbying for the drug company and how does Trump benefit from selling it?

Is the Federal Government supposed to buy and distribute fairly or create total confusion?

I have been fairly fortunate in my life so I have trouble understanding a friend who hasn’t been so lucky in her life. She has lost parts of her body and it not permitted to lift more than thirty-five pounds. She recently developed diabetes and is being treated for it. She is not yet old enough for early social security but does get some disability, food stamps, and Medicaid to pay for medical costs since the company she worked for folded.

She tried for custodial work with Exelon but they require tests to be taken to push a broom and dust desks. She wasn’t given a person to read the questions so she failed the test. I thought the law required someone to read the test for a Dyslexic.

I know many people thinks $15.00 minimum wage is too high but working out a budget for her shows she has to work two part-time jobs of $9.00 per hour or one full time to break even. She thought if she could just get social security she would be okay. She won’t because she has to pay Medicare reducing her future check. She will have to work the rest of her life even with social security. Of course if she makes too much money she loses her subsidies and will be in even worse shape.

I know another lady on social security and a small retirement pension who is barely able to keep her head above water. I know others who can’t ever retire because they have spent their lives buying things they could have done without.

My parents and siblings lived through the depression and WWII which influenced my outlook on life. How will the later generations learn to save for loss of their job or health, much less retirement?

Illinois Voting is Fair

Super Tuesday is coming up and those primaries will be the real test of who our nominees should be because those states better represent our population. I just heard New Hampshire’s Senator Jeanne Shaheen defend New Hampshire’s early primary by saying it better represented our country. How is that possible when it is 93.6% white. Only Idaho, Vermont and Maine are whiter and those are just a few tenths more. Iowa is only a couple of percent less so neither state is representative of most states.

Joe Biden will do very well in the fourth voting state since it comes closer to America.  It is 22% black and has a greater urban and suburban population.

When I was driving into Denver in 2016, the airwaves were full of complaints on the Colorado process. Apparently they have some kind of caucus using a few select people. The meeting started an hour early with only Trump supporters in attendance. The vote took place seconds after and they were leaving as all the other delegates arrived.

Iowa has almost three and a quarter million people but only about 5% attend a caucus and the delegates are apportioned by some weird calculation at party headquarters.

Say what you want about voting in Illinois, but it is actually the most fair in selecting a president.

Hatred Today

I was watching an episode of Star Trek Enterprise about a non-rebel group of Suliban being held in a detention camp for their protection. The camp was compared to our putting ethnic Japanese into tar paper caps for their protection. Manzanar was out on the cold plains of Montana. They, like the ethnic Germans in WWI camps, were in danger because our government had worked to vilify them. Hundreds of ethnic Germans were killed by Americans who had been incited to go out and kill other human beings. The camps may have saved a lot of Japanese-Americans.

Hitler vilified the Jews so much the average German was convinced the Jews were sub-human and an enemy to Germany. Slavic people were sub-humans also. Almost every war has had their people convinced the enemy is horrible and deserves to be killed.

Today I see a similar scenario in many countries around the world. The East Europeans, in particular, have made Syrian refugees the enemy. Myanmar’s ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya is another case in point. Usually the source is the idea of one person or group of people who want to take over control of their people. In the distant past the propaganda was spread verbally, then by newspapers, and later by radio.  Television came along with a more even reporting even if the visual aspect would have helped or exposed the lies. Today the vilification is being done on the social media platforms of FaceBook and Twitter, among others.

The President, NRA, Russians, and others have gotten their way by playing one group against another and by smearing reputations to gain and retain control of particular groups. Except for Trump, all these other instigators work to remain anonymous while dividing our people. It’s obvious for Trump, but to what purpose do others do it?

A Once Proud Party

The basic meaning of paranoia is thinking someone is after you or is laughing from making fun of you. It is called reality when it is really occurring. People say President Trump is paranoiac because he sees everyone is against him but he is right.

Our NATO Partners openly laugh at him behind his back here and at home denigrate him and his administration. His constant flipping of support causes many of our formal allies to look Russia and China for dependable relationships. He says Boris Johnson (Hopefully no relation to me) is his good friend,, but Boris didn’t want any joint pictures with him that might cost him his re-election to Prime Minister of the U.K. Some openly criticize and mock him at international meetings and in their own countries. They speak well of America but poorly of our President.

When Europe needs us to maintain a close relationship with them against Russia, Trump is causing them to worry. We are the glue to NATO which has prevented a European war for longer than any time in recorded history. Russia is doing its best to break up NATO with the same tactics of interference they are using against us. Instead of unity, Trump is causing disunity and confusion.

His verbal and tweet threats have cowered a party that stood for fiscal conservativeness into trillion dollar and growing deficits. He has changed the GOP into a party without a moral code. The party’s only function is to make him feel great about himself at the expense of themselves and the country. How the moral right has fallen! Will it ever arise from its knees again?
