Tariffs — The Truth

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he is hurting the Chinese with his tariffs. Last quarter was the biggest trade deficit with China possibly ever. Companies have pre-bought Chinese products in case Trump won’t back down on his promised raises in the tariffs. He has made it him against the Chinese government and they can’t back down so the Chinese will go to their closet of retaliations.

He has said the billions in tariffs are going into the U.S. Treasury. That is true! The money isn’t paid by the Chinese but by the American Companies purchasing the items. Companies don’t eat that money they paid to import the item, so they pass along the tariff money to the consumer–the American consumer. We, the American consumer will pay this back door tax, wiping out any minimal tax we may have gotten. The steel and aluminum tariffs cost GM $1.4 billion, not China.

The Chinese have put tariffs on many exports to China. Farmers have been especially hit hard. Soybeans have been hit hardest. Corn, wheat, other grains, pork, beef, turkeys, and chicken prices have dropped–Good for consumers, bad for farm communities, farmers, and businesses.  The U.S. Government is going to partly subsidize the soybeans and to a smaller amount the corn farmers, and others. The Agriculture Department just released the meat in storage numbers. They are the largest in years or ever depending on who read the release and their research. When the freezers burst our costs at stores will plummet and so will the price farmers get.

The President thinks in a time span of days and maybe weeks when he destroys markets that were carefully nurtured. China can buy products elsewhere and leave us out for years. Many industries are worried if China will come back.

Shooting Ended 100 Years Ago

The shooting during World War I ended 100 years ago at 11:00 am. November 11, 1918. It was called “The War to End All Wars” because it was so deadly for the 10 millions killed and the tens of millions wounded, blinded, disfigured, and missing limbs. It was the end of the trenches and mass charges in the face of machine guns and massed devastating artillery.

I was born eleven minutes shy of exactly 29 years after the shooting ended. Today we call my birthday Veteran’s Day but it was called Armistice Day and Victory Day when I was born. As a fourth grader, I went to a grade school with a one-armed middle-aged crossing guard. When I asked my Mother about his arm she told a 9-year-old about the horrors of war he had endured.

This was our first real war since the Civil War and our army was totally unprepared. We bought French machine guns that were of poor design and English and French artillery and planes. The entant (allies) and the axis (Germans and Austrians) had bled each other dry. The French and British had lost an entire generation of men. The Germans were sending old men and boys into battle. By the time we got into the war, the axis could see what would happen with us sending a million men a month for at least 10 months. The German and Austrian people were starving so they capitulated. Many soldiers on both sides were killed in the last few minutes before 11:00 a.m.

Unfortunately, World War I and its aftermath created the basis for World War II in Europe and over 40 million deaths. The aftermath of it has spawned more wars so “The War to End All Wars” could be considered the starting point.

Ethics and Patriotism First

The Chicago Tribune asked its readers what the next governor will need to do. The journalist picked out a few representative ones which have previously been cited in this letters section. They are as follows: Do what is best for all, compromise, talk with-not at-people, invest in all of Illinois, cut redundant government bodies, fix pension mess, freeze property taxes, take care of the less-fortunate, term limits, and, of course, income taxes.

Suggested fixes have been proposed here for many months and years, but those people we elect don’t implement them. Why do we keep re-electing them if they don’t solve, but increase our problems.

The state finances are a mess and I have proposed how to fix them within ten years. All the problems can be solved if the people we elect have the guts to fix them even if they might not be in office after the next election. Doing what is right can be called “term limits” and not going what is right is called “staying in office.” Doing what is right doesn’t get them re-elected.

I bet enough of the voters will keep those who blame the other party or governor for letting the state’s mess continue. Senator John McCain is dead and buried. Wouldn’t it be nice if his aisle crossing, ethics, and putting his country (not his voters) first be our main reason to elect a person?

I must be a political enigma to readers, friends and the two major political parties. I now consider myself an independent that has a wide span of views. I have always voted for the candidate I thought was best for the overall good of America. I voted for LBJ, Reagan, Clinton, Gore, signed McCain’s petition and governor’s of both parties. I have financially supported individuals of both parties here and in other states. (My mail is very diverse.)

As Obama recently said in a speech, “All politicians lie and when they get caught,” fess up. I have seen almost every President since Kennedy take blame for something done in his name or some lie he said. Obama said many of today’s leaders constantly lie and their people have become inured to it.

If a person lies constantly, how can people believe anything they say or do? In today’s world of narcissism and Internet lies, is it possible social mores have taken a backseat to commonsense? Is appealing to lowest common denominator the way to get ahead in today’s cultures? Is making some people the bogeyman because of their skin color, ethnicity, or religion again becomes the way to gain support? Is anarchy the new way because anarchists always end up being the one despised or dead?

In today’s world much of the divisiveness has originated from carefully crafted Russian planning and operations. A few years ago we sent several Russian moles back home. Now the FBI has found a twenty-something woman who has infiltrated the NRA and an un-named politician to gain influence and divide us further. How much of the Russian operations caused people to vote for someone? Commonsense says Trump and the Russians are against our morals, beliefs and history. Someone believes making money is the ultimate goal. Getting to the top of the food chain and dominating everyone else is their only plan. Does President Trump consider his ideal leader to be Kim, XI, or Vladimir?

No Planetary Manual

The King James Version of the Bible says we are supposed to take care of the Earth. Man wasn’t given a user manual on how to take care of our only home. The problem didn’t exist a few thousand years ago because a few million primitives lived a simple life within their ecosystems. They ate what was available, wore skins of what they killed, and moved when nearby food become scarce.

The problems began small when civilization started. When people started to congregate into villages and cities, wild lands was turned to cropland and pasture. Forests were cut for buildings and agriculture. Technology began to allow for mining of metals and minerals for bu8ilding. As humanity spread out and the population grew so did the destruction of the Earth. As we learned the oceans were full of food we started to harvest an “infinite” source.

Today the Earth’s 7.5 + billion people have destroyed the Earth’s delicate ecosystem by trying to feed, house, and satisfy unnecessary consumerism. Look around. We have dug massive holes for minerals, dumped the acidic wastes on the surface and burned the coal to change the climate. The need to move faster than walking and animals has given rise to oil production, which has magnified Earth’s destruction. (It did save whales from extinction.) The seas have given their all on feeding us. Stories of the amount of fish and shellfish in Chesapeake Bay indicate we have less than one five-hundredth left. Cod in the Newfoundland area was in the billions and now vast areas have few cod left.

Wasteful consumerism, especially for plastics, have made floating plastic islands, some the size of Texas¸ in our oceans.

What will the world be like when 2050 has over nine billion people and 2100 with twelve billion? Will we have figured a peaceful way to limit population, recycle over and over, reduce pollution, and survive the results of climate change we caused?

Gang Violence

Crime, Gangs

I don’t live in Chicago and can’t see why people would want to live in a shoulder-to-shoulder environment. I remember a study done in the 70s with rats. When the rat population reached a critical mass they started to kill each other, even though they were given enough food for all of them. That’s how I see the violence in Chicago. Granted it’s probably wrong but that’s how this small town rural living guy sees homes stacked like cordwood.

I think Chicago’s violence may be, in part, the jamming of people together. Other causes are economic; too many and easy access to guns, lack of stable home environment, and peer pressure. In order for a gang to function it must have a source of income. The easiest is drugs and guns. Once a gang gets control of a neighborhood, they must defend it from other gangs, hence gang wars and drive-by shootings. Getting a gun is easy because the people who buy them at gun shows in little or no regulation states. Many of these kids have little or no stability in their family life. Peer pressure and fear of harm can cause kids to join gangs.

When I chaired the No-tolerance Task Force in the mid-nineties gang experts told us a leading factor was lack of a strong sense of involvement with family and community. If a kid doesn’t have that feeling then gangs will provide it. Parents must do more to keep their kids out of gangs and away from gang members. They must push education to get them to succeed in life.

The great majority of those shot in the Chicago area are people in one gang shooting another gang’s member. Others were shot because they happened to be down range of a bullet by just living in the area. Police cannot do it by themselves. People need to work with the police instead of marching and protesting.

Voting Quandary

In November, we will have a choice to make in many Congressional Districts. Illinois is a blue state with few Republican representatives. Most are moderate because being a far right winger would not get them elected in today’s political environment. About five cycles ago most of the Republican moderates across the nation were defeated by radicals.

The cycle presents a real quandary for those of us who are real centrists. The moderates may not agree with the far right nut cases in many instances but they vote how President Trump tells them. Keeping Trump from destroying what the past ten Presidents have built for America may mean Illinois voters must elect Democratic replacements.

I don’t want Congress to swing too far to the left either but Donald Trump’s quest to destroy the fabric of our great nation must be stopped. He has rolled back the financial, environmental, and workplace regulations that were onerous when enacted but most were workable and good for us. Instead of reducing our massive debt he has increased it on the scale of Greece. He is used to running up debt, taking a profit and then declaring bankruptcy. America can’t do that.

Richard Nixon’s paranoia did not get us into such a mess as we are now entering into during this Presidential term. To take the first step we need for the Republican moderates to walk away from Trump or to lose their seat in Congress. We can’t have Representatives standing behind their leaders who have stood on the dais with Trump telling us how great he is.

Lying every day isn’t any way to run America.

Politically Correct

I am not Politically Correct. Oh, I don’t use inappropriate slang words for people of different races, ethnics, gender, or religions. My mother told me when I was a kid to treat everybody the same. Apparently several million peoples’ mothers didn’t teach them correctly. The Declaration of Independence says all MEN are created equal (they didn’t mean women?) and the Constitution counted “three-fifths of all other persons (read slaves). Many of the amendments have tried to equalize the inequality (equal rights amendment for women has failed.) So, white men are still at the top of the heap.

Most Americans try not to intentionally offend others but in today’s climate, who knows what is okay. It seems a man can’t mention a woman’s lack of tan lines when she wears a backless dress or even say she looks great in that dress. Hugs are out and so is a pat on the back.

I think gender PC has gone way over the top. Women hug each other and men but if a man hugs a woman it’s harassment. One of the women complaining about Morgan Freeman’s behavior said on a TV news program “Mr. Freeman said I looked sexy in that dress.” Is it now wrong to compliment someone’s appearance? Are compliments now harassment?

I worked in many jobs (I would have said positions but that might not be PC!) and with many women and I only know of only one harassment. It was another supervisor who kept hitting on a woman in his group so she asked to work for me and that stopped it. Fishing off the company pier today is grounds for a harassment charge.

Have we gone so far from sanity that walls need to be built around each of us? Accusing someone of something they think occurred years or even decades ago is ridiculous. Times have changed! What was commonplace thirty years ago may have been wrong then but being penalized now is wrong, wrong, wrong. Many countries have had a reconciliation time to overcome murders and kidnapping, why can’t we forgive and forget old harassments?

Missiles Not Needed

About forty years ago I saw a frightening and thought provoking docu-drama on how to use a nuclear device to destroy Charleston, South Carolina. The investigation to find the who and where it was at was intensive and edge-of-seat. It was on a yacht tied up to the dock. It blew just as the experts were going aboard. It was never broadcast again. I suspect a government input because it showed a missile or bomber wasn’t needed to deliver a nuke to any city.

Today’s news is about stopping North Korea and Iran from having intercontinental missiles. Why? In today’s world FedEx or DHL could mail a small one to your doorstep. A larger one could be put into a shipping container and shipped anywhere (less than 2% are checked!) Of course a bomb could be put on a ship and sailed to Chicago. They may already be here!

North Korea has 20-60 bombs that aren’t deliverable by missile. Have they already shipped some to our cities? Has Russia or China or even Pakistan? Which country might sell or have stolen a nuke. CIA says Russia didn’t get all of the bombs back that stored in the Ukraine and North Korea sells items to get cash. Some terrorists are funded with millions and billions so getting one may not be too difficult. Dissident groups in nuclear armed countries might secure one in hopes of accomplishing something.

Now wonder what is in those shipping containers on that rail car or trailer at the warehouses around Minooka, Joliet, and Elwood. If the hairs on the back of your neck don’t tingle it may be due to a razor.

Who Will It Be In 2020

Assuming Donald Trump is still President in 2019, who will be the Republican Party’s nominee? Will ego and narcissism cause him to run again, possibly against some of those who sought the nomination in 2016. One pair is already being pushed by the power brokers in the GOP and those of the party who Trump has minimalized and besmirched. The pair is Vice-President Mike Pence and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. Both have been Governor of their states. Pence would probably not have been re-elected Indiana’s Governor because of his excessive need to cut the budget, reduce taxes, and run up debt. Haley was less strident in a moderately red state. Her skeleton was removing the Confederate Battle Flag from all South Carolina government flagpoles and properties.

The current polls indicate Trump’s support is still around 40% but many of those would not vote for him again. The Democrats will probably take control of the House and possibly the Senate. Trump has not had a good relationship with the Republican controlled legislative branch and he would not be able to work with a Democratic one that won their seats because of him.

Bush I rode very high after Desert Storm but quickly lost support and the election. Can Trump create an impression of enough successes to hold off Republican challengers? He lies. He bullies. He is narcissistic and immoral. Can he keep enough support from people who dislike his ethics? Would he run if he might not win? If he runs, it will be the ugliest contest ever!
