No Bravery in Illinois

Our State’s Governor and Legislators care more about being elected than taking responsible positions on balancing the budget while paying off the current and past bills, the accrued debt, and pension debt. Legislators work in a bipartisan way to spend hundreds of millions in their districts to appease voters and contributors. One such project is an Ohio River Port for Cairo. It will be a failure just as the Mid-American Airport is. A yearly waste is unnecessary road repairs. Monies designated by special taxes are being diverted to those wasted projects. They passed taxes for designated uses for votes, and then use the money elsewhere for votes.

Our supposedly high taxes rate puts us in with the bottom half of the states because of all the deductions and exemptions we get. One exemption most people would agree could be eliminated is state pensions. The treasurer will pay out $8.5 billion this year for pensions. Eliminating it would mean $425 million for paying down the state’s debt. Taxing the pensions when issued would mean those pensioners living out -of-state would pay for money they made while living here.

Another change would be combining all five pension funds into one. This would eliminate double and triple dipping by too many people jumping from one plan to another and drawing two or three pensions. Legislators, judges, and others get one pension and after a few years, jump to another public job, and maybe another. It’s possible a person could qualify for three in twelve years. Lengthening vestment to at least ten years would save money and multiple pensions. Add in one or two Federal pensions by the same maneuvering. Combining all five would save billions in pension liabilities.

A Problem With Aging

My memory is still good enough to remember when I was learning how our democratic form of government worked. We were told that all the eligible citizens voted for the best people who were like us.

I remember the people we elected to office did what the voters told them to do. They worked together for the good of the country. The two legislative parts worked with the Executive Branch so few vetoes were used.

I remember the Supreme Court was composed of experts on the Constitution. They kept the other two branches on track with the ideals of the founding fathers.

Oh yes, those founding fathers who courageously broke with that mean King of England, who taxed without representation. These men (women were to be kept barefoot, pregnant and ignorant of politics.) made decisions based solely on what was good for the people and the fledgling country.

Well, that was what was in my civics book and what my teacher told me. Fifty years later I know the truth. The veil of idealism has been lifted, wadded up and dumped into the garbage can!

The famous Boston Tea Party was actually a bunch of drunks from a local tavern egged on by some of those Founding Fathers. What was their motive? They were tea smugglers whose tea was higher priced than the East India Company’s tea. Don’t forget the Boston Massacre that Paul Revere (a smuggler) made famous for his silverware, was a minor incident and the only person killed being black. Since the death of a freed black man wouldn’t excite people in the South, he became white.

Does anyone think we elect people that really have the voter’s interest in mind? Recently a politician, in a moment of honesty, reminded me of an old saying, “Do you know of any politician that was poorer when he got out of office than when he went in?” Laws are passed with loopholes that were paid for by lobbyists. Connect the dots.

A Lebanonese businessman once told me, “The Middle East Conflict is business. The guy with the gun is told its religion so he will fight.” Isn’t that similar to what we believe today? Somebody is paying a lot of money to con you into believing what they want you to believe.

Listening Tours

How many times have you heard someone who is going to run for office say they would do a listening tour? I have heard people running for judge, states attorney, state and federal representative and senator say those or similar words. They say they will do it so they can understand voter concerns. They say they want to represent what your concerns are. Two or three polls tell them what we think so they can say that is what they want too. Don’t you want people who tell you what they think so you can decide which you will vote for? We should vote for the one whose views we agree with the most.

Hillary Clinton did a listening, but her positions were the same after as before the tour. Trump has been for everything he was against and against everything he was for. For instance he donated millions to Democrats and not Republicans, Planned Parenthood, and other liberal causes. His tour was to watch Fox Networks and Breitbart news. Going after their followers became his policies and promises.

With stupidity being rampant with people who believe what they read on social media and what the Russians fed people, Trump won with policies the great majority disagreed with.

Why do we vote for people who are seeking our vote so they can make money or put through their own agenda. I had rather vote for someone’s own principles than vote for someone who formed their viewpoints to suit enough voters to be elected.

Clancy Drained the Swamp

In Tom Clancy’s Book, Executive Orders, he imagined what would happen if the President, Cabinet, Supreme Court, Joint Chiefs, and all the members of Congress were killed. Clancy forgot to kill off the lobbyists who are the real power. They spread millions of dollars and write many of the laws Congress votes on. The Supreme Court’s decision on Citizen’s United allows millions in “Dark Money” (unregistered and hidden) to find its way into pockets, campaign chests, and political organizations.

Clancy did not write how such an event would affect the billionaires who currently control our three branches of government. In the book, Clancy proposed the people who would run for Senator might hate it so much one or two terms would be all they could stand. Of course, each Governor would appoint the Representatives for that state so they would be political. Think of it, no existing empires to control new people so it would have to start all over again.

Trump’s swamp is real but the first thing he did was to deepen it by doing away with the ethics rules. Lobbyists and lawyers who fronted for special interests were chosen for cabinet posts and under secretaries.

Before the reader thinks the swamp is only in the Administration, think about how a retired high school coach and Speaker of the House can still be wealthy after paying three million to a blackmailer. When they retire, high paying jobs in banks, consulting corporations, and others awaits them assuming they voted right. Those in the Administration get offers in the same places.

Famous Last Words

Over the many years I have been watching American politics I have seen people say many things they should not have said. Often these self-inflicting wounds have killed their political ambitions. I remember Governor Gary Hart saying he didn’t fool around and if reporters didn’t believe him they should follow him. One did and took pictures of him cavorting with some women on a boat called “Monkey Business.” It cost him the lead in the presidential primary.

Obama made an offhand remark about Pennsylvania people being gun and religious nuts or something to that effect t. It did not go over well. Hillary Clinton made some off-script comments that may have cost her the election. Senator Edmund Muskie made a derogatory comment about Canadians by using the word Canucks (That’s the name of a Canadian Hockey Team) that was twisted against him. It cost him the New Hampshire’s primary.

Of course omissions can sink a candidate, too. Remember when Governor Rick Perry forgot the fourth cabinet post he would eliminate. “Oops” was the famous last words from him.

Sometimes a president says something wrong or lies and is caught. Reagan’s comment on Irangate was beyond credibility causing him to publicly apologize (sort of).

President Trump seldom gets his facts correct or just makes them up as he adlibs. Perhaps his truest statement which I am sure will be used thousands of times is his story before this year’s CPAC meeting. I quote: “You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in.” How more honest can he be?

Bravery is More Than a Word

Our brave President has said he wouldn’t have stayed outside the Parkland High School like the school’s resource man, he would have charged into the building. Of course he would have been surrounded by his secret service detail protecting him.

After publicly criticizing members of his own party for cowering before the National Rifle Association, he said he would lead the charge. Later that evening the assault troops from the NRA went to the White House. Trump surrendered with out receiving any wounds. His bravado pales to the point he announced the next day a total agreement with the NRA’s line.

If he is scared of the NRA, what will he do when he is meeting the leader of North Korea? Kim has killed hundreds including his half brother and uncle. His family thinks nothing about killing their own people by torture, starvation, or Kim’s favorite way of tying them to the muzzle of an artillery piece and yanking the lanyard.

Kim may be a cartoonist character, but Trump thinks of himself as a tough guy. However, one really is a tough guy and the other is just a cartoon character.

Rocket Finances

Currently we are running with the bulls, but they are beginning to tire just as most people get into the race.  Many of us remember the 1987 Crash, the Dot.Com Crash, and the Great Recession.  In between these investment disasters have been retreats, retrenchments and pullbacks.

Sometimes the stock market goes up like a child’s rocket and other times like a Saturn V.  This time we have another Saturn V.  It feels somewhat like the great time before the Dot.Com Crash when my broker wasn’t available and wouldn’t return my calls.

One thing all investors should know and remember is no matter which rocket we are riding, it will not go into orbit.  Gravity always exerts its influence and brings the investments down.  Bonds usually fall slowly but stocks can move downward extremely fast.  Mutual funds and Exchange Traded Stocks move just as fast as the stocks on which they are based but are slower to get out of.

Some people will ride the bear down to the bottom and slowly climb back up.  It’s called a bear market until it reaches the old highs.  Others will see it coming and go to cash so they buy back in at a much lower level.

Whether you invest directly, through your IRA, or your 401K, the market will fall and rise again sooner or later.  No rocket can achieve orbit and will, sooner or later, fall back to earth no matter what a President says or does.  Rising markets create a measure of euphoria whether or not a person is invested so they buy things.  When it falls, people stop buying and this often creates a recession.  Booming economics are always followed by recessions because orbit is not possible.

Do As I Say, NOT

In the 1970s after I paid my taxes, I would lay in bed at night trying to figure out where we had spent all the money we had made (less than $10,000) and have nothing in the bank. We rented a small house for $140; health insurance was covered by work (still paid a portion) and had a $125 car loan. Taxes were the biggest item and were mandatory.

To figure out where it went I started to do a budget – it was an eye opener. Budgeting made a difference into what we borrowed. We borrowed to buy a lot, paid it off, and then borrowed and built a house I designed. Through budgeting and time we have paid off all debts.

This behavior is exactly what the conservatives in Washington D.C. have been saying responsible people should do. Then why did the Republicans vote to give a huge tax cut for corporations that are awash with money and billionaires when we are over $20,000,000,000,000 in debt? The Democrats did not vote for it and several Republicans voted for it because their vote was bought by amendments in the bill. Suddenly principles and admonishing us to be more responsible were buried for politics and being re-elected.

History has shown tax cuts are net losses to the treasury. So this would be similar to my being several million in debt and borrowing another million which I can’t pay for. So instead of increasing revenue to pay off my loans, I decided to cut my hours to 32 instead of increasing them to 48. This is exactly what our Republican leaders just did. So much for years of preaching fiscal responsibility. Do as I say and vote for me again!

What Is Sexual Harassment?

A senator French kisses a woman and it’s called sexual harassment – maybe. Women I don’t know kiss and hug me and I am not comfortable with it. Is that sexual harassment? People want to jam their bodies against another person for a picture so hands may touch a personal area. If a squeeze doesn’t happen it’s an accident, not harassment!

To counter the kisses and hugs I have learned to shoot a hand out to stop a hug in its tracks. I have seen many professional men and women hugging the same or opposite genders without any apparent problem. How does one know who to hug and who not to hug?

One man is resigning because he asked a staffer if she would be a surrogate mother. That’s not harassment to me. Trump said he had groped many women but millions voters don’t care.

It would be very interested to hear from men and women what they consider borders on harassment and under what conditions. Is most harassment that nebulous and exists mainly in the eyes of the beholder? Will it get to the point where we are like little kids and afraid to touch or even be near someone else? Please write in your opinions.

Thin Bibles In D.C.

Where are those Bible-thumping conservative Republicans when we need them? They are in the pockets of the extremely rich of the world. I say world because in a global economy, the investors around the world own pieces of our stocks, bonds, real estate, and other financial instruments.

Haven’t they read how we are supposed to be saving up during the good years so we have money during the bad years? When the Democrats are in power those conservatives complain about the deficits and debt. Now they are pushing a tax reform that they admit will increase both. Even in their rosiest predictions we will go another $150-200 billion a year farther in the hole. Shouldn’t we be cutting our debt like President Clinton and speaker Gingrich did? The debt started ballooning again with Bush IIs tax cuts. Then when the Great Recession hit he had blown the savings and we had no choice but dump debt money into the system.

Phony reform which supposedly is for the middle class which really saves the rich billions is a deception to get re-elected by suckers. The money that keeps them in office comes from those millionaires and billionaires directly or through the many non-profits they use as fronts. The Koch’s Cabal’s businesses will save tens of billions.

Their Bibles must be very thin because they have removed so much that conflicts with their deplorable ethics. It seems like the money changers are in charge in our country. All other countries take care of their people but we get trickle down voodoo economics. When will we get tired of being trickled on and vote them out? Our supposed national debt is now over $21,000,000,000,000 and the hidden maybe twice as much.
