Sympathy Vote

I remember a Democrat who was running for Senator in Illinois. I remember the poll numbers showed him to be well behind his primary opponent. After Senator Charles Percy’s daughter was killed is numbers shot up and he won the primary and the general election.

After Vice President Joe Biden’s son died of cancer many of his advisers told him he could not lose now. They told him people would feel sorry for him and vote for him. Because of being so distraught and not wanting to win that way, he backed out. That shows an immense amount of character.

The United States has a divided population. About a quarter is to the hard left with another ten percent left leaning. About the same percentages apply to the right. Those two total about seventy percent with the remaining people being called independent and voting for either party depending on their feelings that election.

Now we are faced with another incident that will probably cause a great deal of sympathy for former President Donald Trump and perhaps giving him enough votes in the Electoral College to become the next President. Currently all the swing state polls show him ahead but within the range of error.

How much will the sympathy for Trump add to his polling numbers will be impossible to tell since the poll will probably take place after the convention? Traditionally a convention will give a short term bump up before it settles back. Will this incident make a difference to Trump’s poll?  Because the gun was an AR-15 rifle, will Trump keep his support for allowing assault style guns? Good thing the kid didn’t have a bump stock!

When I was in high school a classmate and I were walking in front of a line of stores. The pharmacy had a metal two sided sign hanging about eight foot above the sidewalk. He suddenly leaped up and gave it a karate chop, breaking a bone in his hand. Six weeks later he got the cast off and as we walked under that same sign he did the same thing with the same result. It was my first experience with “Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.” I think I learned that lesson from his pain but why do so many people keep doing the same stupid things? We keep electing the same candidates with the same insane goals they know can not or should not happen. Examples are former President George Bush campaigned against raising the income tax former President Bill Clinton was using to balance the budget and pay off the National Debt. He said he could cut the taxes and get more revenue. He cut taxes and the deficit took off again. Former President Donald Trump cut taxes as he promised and the deficit ballooned even more.

We elect people who say they are going to help us but they increases the debt. Getting re-elected is more important to them than doing the hard work. The social media CEOs were just in front of an “angry Senate committee.” The CEOs pledged to cut their involvement with kids; so the Senate will create another committee to look into it which means the matter will quietly die. Why? This is the second time they assembled with the same result.

I know Gary learned a painful lesson about hitting a sign but Americans keep hitting the sign when they should know the result will hurt. To reduce the National Debt, we heed people who know a substantial increase in taxes now is critical.

Maybe The Last Vote

Donald Trump said Nikki Haley is a traitor because she once supported him and has now turned against him. In addition she doesn’t agree with his policy on immigration and how to work with other countries.

She should have been ready with this response. Donald Trump is clinically insane. He is much more paranoid and vindictive than Richard Nixon and more misogynist than Bill Clinton. He follows the doctrines and behavior of Adolf Hitler.

Nixon had an enemies list which he had the Attorney General use the FBI and other agencies follow, wiretap, and harass those people. He had the Treasury Secretary use the Internal Revenue Services to audit them often and intensively.

Trump’s own words indicates how he feels about women. His treatment of his wives, those in beauty contests, and those women he dated, paid for, and was idolized by. Like Bill Clinton, Trump was good friend with Jeffrey Epstein.

Like Adolph Hitler, Trump has influenced an unstable group of people who follow his subtle directives against other groups of people. Like Nixon, Hitler had an enemies list but Hitler’s enemies were sent to concentration camps or killed. Trump’s need for power and adulation is like Hitler. It must be unconditional and absolute loyalty is demanded. An example of this is when he had several of his followers tell how great he is at a press conference while he sat nearby smiling with his arms crossed. Hitler had the swastika on everything while Trump has “MAGA” on flags, caps, shirts and an array of other items.

In his final days Hitler told Generals to destroy everything to punish the people. Trump has said America will be destroyed if he isn’t in the White House.

I keep hearing politicians and pundits say Donald Trump should be on the ballot so the people can decide and not the courts. I might agree with that if the people would actually be the ones making the decision who should be in the Oval Office. The people don’t make that decision. Why? The 2016 election said Clinton won by 2,868.686 votes but Trump was declared the winner by the Electoral College.

Another was Al Gore and George Bush. The Supreme Court stopped the counting of votes in Florida so the State went into Bush’s Electoral side giving him the win by five vote. Gore won the popular vote with 543,895 more votes.

When people say let the voters decide, apparently those two elections were not decided by the people. The Founders in 1787 decided the people weren’t smart enough to decide so they setup a system where “smart” people could make the decision for their “dumb” fellow citizens. Their intelligence was shown to be faulty when they declared the one with the second number of electoral votes would be the Vice-President!

Moral and Ethics Matter

I remember when a Missouri Senator wanted to run for President but was harassed out of the race because he had had a few sessions with a psychologist. I remember another Senator who was with a woman not his wife on a boat and had to quit his presidential dream when pictures came out in the newspapers. I remember another Senator who lived in a Canadian border state and called Canadians Canucks and was ridden out of the race because he supposedly disparaged the Canadians. (It is the name of a Canadian Hockey team.) I remember a President who was run out of office for something unrelated to his job.

I remember when JFK was supposed to have gotten in because Mayor Daley pumped in 20,000 votes to put him over the top with Illinois’ electoral votes or Nixon would have won. This may not have been the first time a Republican said he was cheated. Kennedy got 303 and Nixon got 219 so Illinois wasn’t the key. Since then the popular vote has been separated by millions and no problems with the loser concerning defeat. Even Al Gore conceded after being screwed in Florida because that was what real Americans do to help rejoin the country.

Today we have over a few hundred people running for Senator, Representative, governor and attorneys general in many states and say they won’t accept defeat. Many U.S. Senators and Representatives say the only way they lose is fraud. All of those deny Trump lost, or they don’t get his approval or the votes of his deluded followers.

How have the voters of the United States suddenly found that voting for liars, racists and other immoral and unethical to be okay? What happened to believing the person with the most votes should win? Vote for people who want democracy and not a dictatorship.

Not Me OR Witch Hunt

I have not have not heard so many denials by Republicans since Watergate. All interviews with the Republican Washington hierarchy and many others seem to have “not me”, “I didn’t do or say that” or “it’s a witch hunt”. Recently their denials have been shown to be lies by their own E-mails and/or voice recordings.

When the House’s January sixth probe subpoenas them, they have three choices. One is to comply with answers and give massive amounts of information. Second is to bring nothing and take the Fifth Amendment. The third choice is to not comply and face a criminal trial when the Attorney General’s office goes forth with the indictment.

They all took the oath of office but few are doing what they swore to do. Two Republicans that truly follow that oath are Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger. Both are Republicans. I often don’t agree with their opinions and their vote on issues. I would vote for either because they may believe in honesty. Cheney will probably win her seat again thanks to her despised father. Kinzinger has chosen not to run again. Congress will miss him.

Why is honesty at such a low level in legislations in Washington and most states? It is because we keep re-electing the liars and crooks since we are too lazy to check out their lies or too gullible and believe their outrageous un-American conspiracies. Do the research! Don’t vote for somebody who pushes the “Big Lie” or denies involvement in trying to overthrow our government!

Voter Suppression

I used to be a Democrat. I changed to being a Republican during late Reagan-Bush years. I thought we had a chance for a third party with Ross Perot and now I vote for the best one of either major party.

Voting means a lot to me and I don’t do absentee or early voting because it would lose some of the aura. Voting is critical to being a citizen of the United States. My first vote was for LBJ and I have voted for the winner sometimes and sometimes not. That is why I consider suppression so totally reprehensible.

Over the last few elections the Republican Party has been suppressing votes by keeping people from voting and tossing out votes. A black Democratic woman would have been the Georgia Governor if the Secretary of State (the winner) hadn’t suppressed voting in Black areas. The Republican Texas Governor reduced the ballot drop off boxes to one per county. The vast majority of those in multi-million population cities were Democrats. The Republicans just lost a state and federal suit to not count 125,000 votes from drive through voting in the big cities. Several states have had their absentee votes counting questioned in court. Even more upsetting is when gun toting idiots stand around voting places questioning people they think might vote Democratic.

I hope the next President jails for several years anyone involved with voter suppression or destroying ballots as a Republican did two years ago in North Carolina. It is despicable which ever party or group does it.

State Voter Suppression

I live in a rural subdivision. My voting place is a church and I don’t think I have seen more than three other voters lined up like those in Georgia and some other Republican states

In Texas, the governor restricted the drop-off ballot boxes Democrats were more likely to use to one per county. That may work in Grundy County, but not for four of America’s biggest cities with a population of over a million. Georgia restricted the number of polling places in areas with high Democratic registered voters. Both are voter suppression.

Several states are now vote-by-mail only and had no problems with counting votes. Some other states without experience in massive mail voting had lots of problems. Some started counting before November 3, some as voting day started, some at the end of the day, and the worst was ones that didn’t start to count until all the in-person votes were counted. This created lots of problems with some mail-ins still not counted on the 17th.

Registration varies from state to state. Some allow for day of and other must present lots of documents far in advance. Some must present a picture I.D. and others a matching signature with documents. My signature is vastly different each time.

Before the next federal election in 2022 a uniform bill needs to be passed and used to reduce, if not eliminate, suppression and late counts. One addition should be the person in charge of voting cannot be running for an office in that election as in Georgia governor’s election. The bill wouldn’t end all voter suppression and false claims of fraud but it would go a long way to making voting the process we say it is.

Election Laws

I have said this before and the last election shows a validity of the idea. With some states being won by a little over a thousand votes in Presidential elections and Florida’s Bush-Gore decided by just over 500 votes, how soon will a President win and election by 12 votes. Not 12 in one state but one in each of 12 states. The voters in the other 38 states could all votes against that person and it wouldn’t matter.

The Electoral College is an antiquated idea based on the time the Constitution was written. Jefferson wrote that the Constitution should be torn up and rewritten every ten years. The original purpose was the average landowning man who was allowed to vote was not knowledgeable enough to know who the best man was to be president. Mud and lies were common back then just as today. The difference is that today an intelligent voter – there are some – can check the lies out on independent sources.

The other reason for the College is ridiculous today. The College was supposed to be the only way way population states get a say in who is president. Today they are called fly-over states since nobody campaigns in them. If a state has less than 5 or 6 votes, it isn’t worth the time and money. It is antiquated for that reason.

So if a candidate wins California (55), Texas (38), Florida (29), New York (29) Pennsylvania (20), Illinois (20), Ohio (18), Georgia (16), Michigan (16), North Carolina (15), Virginia (13), and Arizona (11), they win the Oval Office. Money wins votes so if a candidate dumps the billions they raise on just those twelve they might win with only 50 million while the other candidate loses with over 200 million.
