Presidential Qualifications

I think Jackie Kennedy’s last letter she wrote before leaving the White House was to Nikita Khrushchev. Jack Kennedy and Khrushchev had been negotiating nuclear warhead limits as to numbers and sizes.

This is part of that letter which is as important today as it was in 1963. “War might be started not so much by big men who have self control and restraint, but by little men who are sometimes moved by fear and pride.”

The world has many small men with nuclear weapons. Let us hope the people we put in the oval office aren’t the small men she feared. Remember those words when you vote for President!

One Senior worth Ten Kids

The political campaign mantra is that seniors vote and young voters may not. A good campaigner can get kids all wound up- but few actually get out to vote. Seniors look at the possibility of not only getting elected but getting their ideas put into law. The Biden followers are older and black. His followers are known to vote in large numbers.

We older voters don’t usually vote early in a Presidential election primary year because the choices will winnow down well before the Illinois primary. Those kids who voted early for their soul mate choice probably wasted their time since Pete and Liz are out. In November I picked Biden for the Democratic finalist and Klobuchar to be his vice-President. I admit before Super Tuesday I was getting a little nervous about my prediction.

We will be voting in the Primary and in November at our regular voting place.
Will the kids? Will you be voting at our polling place?

Voting is a Responsibility

As the primary season approaches, this question is the one every voter should ask themselves: “What does the person really stand for?” Supposedly during the French Revolution a man was talking with another man when he saw a mob coming up the street. He said to the other, “I must find out what they are angry about so I can lead them.”

Do you vote for someone who wants your vote so he can represent your current concern and change when your later opinion changes? Or, will you vote for someone who really believes in something instead of being swayed by whatever the social media is running? In other words, do you vote for someone who just wants to be in office for a job and has no particular compass direction or someone with a particular point of view?

Do you want a person representing you whose main objective is to stay in office and doing whatever he is told by his party’s leadership? How about someone whose votes are changed by whatever lobbyist puts the most money in his campaign chest, or gives him the best trip to some exotic place?

In today’s world of misinformation (read lies) on social media where the Russians and others deceive voters into stupid decisions, how does one know who to vote for? Its hard work to watch interviews and to read reputable news reports to form an opinion but it’s the responsible thing to do. Good citizenship and honoring all those who have fought and died to give you the right to vote requires you to vote in every election. An intelligent and thoughtful vote for each nominee who really believes what you do is the responsible right each voter has inherited from their forebearers. DO THE WORK AND VOTE!

Illinois Voting is Fair

Super Tuesday is coming up and those primaries will be the real test of who our nominees should be because those states better represent our population. I just heard New Hampshire’s Senator Jeanne Shaheen defend New Hampshire’s early primary by saying it better represented our country. How is that possible when it is 93.6% white. Only Idaho, Vermont and Maine are whiter and those are just a few tenths more. Iowa is only a couple of percent less so neither state is representative of most states.

Joe Biden will do very well in the fourth voting state since it comes closer to America.  It is 22% black and has a greater urban and suburban population.

When I was driving into Denver in 2016, the airwaves were full of complaints on the Colorado process. Apparently they have some kind of caucus using a few select people. The meeting started an hour early with only Trump supporters in attendance. The vote took place seconds after and they were leaving as all the other delegates arrived.

Iowa has almost three and a quarter million people but only about 5% attend a caucus and the delegates are apportioned by some weird calculation at party headquarters.

Say what you want about voting in Illinois, but it is actually the most fair in selecting a president.

The average worker has had an 11% raise over inflation since 1977. The average CEO had that much last year alone. The average professional baseball, basketball, football, and hockey player got much more with the stars getting outrageous increases. Many CEOs make over a thousand times more than the median worker. Why aren’t the workers of America rightly upset?

The massive corporate tax cut that was to wend its way down to those median workers who desperately need sizeable raises didn’t make it. Less than ten percent have used the money to help their workers. Most directly or indirectly raised their salaries, increased their stock price using stock buy-backs, or purchased another company. Since almost 90% of our country’s wealth is owned by less than 1% of us, the massive tax cut did nothing for 99% of us.

The trickle down economic philosophy means the fire hydrant water floods into the fire hose but a trickle comes out the nozzle. If that happened at a fire people would demand answers. Why not now? If the economy is doing so well why are millions of workers getting little or no pay increases? Why are the workers on bicycles when the upper managers are in Ferraris? Newspapers, magazines, and TV have shown only a small interest in the situation. The administration and the Republican congress said their tax cut would help low and middle class Americans more than the rich before the cut and while campaigning. Why aren’t they asked why you aren’t being given raises like the upper managers and CEOs? Also ask who is going to pay for the massive debt and deficit of over 1.5 trillion this year. Those are good questions to ask. Let’s see if we get truthful answers.

Who Should Vote?

Civics, Vote

Last year the University of Pennsylvania did an unsurprising survey of 1,013 Americans. Only a quarter knew the three branches of government! Even worse is almost three hundred couldn’t name any. Your first thought should be if the United States is supposed to be the first democracy (maybe of the millennia) then we are definitely letting our ancestors and the founding fathers down.

I don’t know what percentage of the greatest generation voted but all I knew never missed a chance. When we have a high turnout vote, it isn’t even half of us. Sometimes it’s in the teens!

Why is the key? When AARP members went to school, we had a civics class and had to pass a test on the Constitution. I still remember the basics but I do not know many of today’s cabinet. There are twice as many today than we had in the 1960s. Somewhere afterwards schools stopped teaching civics. Is that the reason for later generation’s ignorance? Is that why voting and knowledge has dropped.

Good news for Illinois. The schools are mandated to teach civics (Morris will teach a full semester.) to the class of 2020. The question is will it be the idealized version that never existed or the real government. Will it involve dark Monday, lobbyists, campaigns, national parties, organizations, political foundations and all the other real parts of the three branches?

Is it better to teach the truth and hope they will vote to improve the situation or let them remain ignorant of real life? Should people vote if they are clueless and ignorant as many voters are or know the reality of the system and not vote?
