I really hope we aren’t repeating our negotiating experiences with North Viet Nam during the 1970s today in Afghanistan. We told our Vietnamese ally that we had their back in negotiating a cease-fire. They were not allowed to participate in the talks, just as the Afghan government is kept from the talks with the Taliban because we have their back. Our assurances then were lies.

How much are we willing to give away to get out? We pushed Afghan gender equality and universal education. Both are against Taliban ideology so if they hold to their requirements, will we throw the Afghan women under the bus? Will we decide to give away our view of justice and modernization to get out?

Viet Nam isn’t Afghanistan. Ho Chi Minh had no thought to attacking or supporting anyone or group wanting to attack outside of the Southeast Asian theatre. It took a long time for Americans to get comfortable with the Vietnamese communists. I do not ever see how we can have a normal relationship with a Taliban ideology Afghanistan. The Chinese are trying to gain influence for mining and passing through with the New China Road but they will ultimately fail.

Over 22,000 Afghan army and police were killed last year fighting the Taliban. We lost nineteen troops. Every death is bad but we can’t cut and run this time. No matter what assurances the Taliban gives us now, Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups will return. Even if it takes another twenty years, we have to stay until the Taliban is completely defeated.

Shooting Ended 100 Years Ago

The shooting during World War I ended 100 years ago at 11:00 am. November 11, 1918. It was called “The War to End All Wars” because it was so deadly for the 10 millions killed and the tens of millions wounded, blinded, disfigured, and missing limbs. It was the end of the trenches and mass charges in the face of machine guns and massed devastating artillery.

I was born eleven minutes shy of exactly 29 years after the shooting ended. Today we call my birthday Veteran’s Day but it was called Armistice Day and Victory Day when I was born. As a fourth grader, I went to a grade school with a one-armed middle-aged crossing guard. When I asked my Mother about his arm she told a 9-year-old about the horrors of war he had endured.

This was our first real war since the Civil War and our army was totally unprepared. We bought French machine guns that were of poor design and English and French artillery and planes. The entant (allies) and the axis (Germans and Austrians) had bled each other dry. The French and British had lost an entire generation of men. The Germans were sending old men and boys into battle. By the time we got into the war, the axis could see what would happen with us sending a million men a month for at least 10 months. The German and Austrian people were starving so they capitulated. Many soldiers on both sides were killed in the last few minutes before 11:00 a.m.

Unfortunately, World War I and its aftermath created the basis for World War II in Europe and over 40 million deaths. The aftermath of it has spawned more wars so “The War to End All Wars” could be considered the starting point.

NATO Is Critical

The President and many Americans would like for us to leave NATO because we don’t need to be involved with European defense. When Trump was asked if American boys should have to go fight in Montenegro, he said that is the problem with NATO rules. Article Three has only been invoked once and we did it after 9-11. It is why several NATO countries are still in Afghanistan.

We were isolationists before WWI and WWII. Since NATO, Europe has not had a war or much of a verbal disagreement. The Cold War was a uniting factor because Stalin had put his massive army in the Warsaw Pact countries. West Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, and Turkey could feel his hot breath on them. When the Warsaw Pact dissolved, those countries asked to be in NATO to prevent Russia from pulling them back into Russia’s fold.

Today’s Russia is using its military to start getting parts of the pact back. The first was to cut off part of Georgia and nobody came to their aid because they weren’t in NATO. Next he hid his marines in ships anchored in the leased harbor in the Crimea. One night they flooded out and took control of the Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula. The next year Putin sponsored an insurrection in Western Ukraine, supplied arms and finally “volunteers” with high tech weapons. It was a Russian missile operated by “volunteers” that shot down a KLM Airliner. Western Ukraine – another country not in NATO.

The Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia asked and got NATO troops to be an additional tripwire because Putin is eyeing their countries now. We have at least a company in each country along with those from other NATO countries.

Putin wants those Warsaw Pact countries back even if he has to nibble of pieces of them year after year. NATO prevents Russia from doubling the size of the army and starting little wars, which could become big ones.

Will We Desert the Kurds Now?

The Kurds defeated the ISIS with our help. We armed them, supplied them and supported them with air and artillery support. When the Iraqi military was struggling to find their butts with both hands, we got the Kurds to go past their tribal boundaries in Iraq and continued chasing ISIS into Syria. The Kurds are the only people in the area we can trust.

Yes, the Kurds would like to have their own country which would span Western Turkey, Northern Iraq, and Eastern Iran. They have a semi-autonomous area in Iraq, which we designated as a no-fly zone against Saddam, and are supported by large oilfields which Iraq allows them to keep some of the revenue. An oil pipe lane extends through Turkey to an oil port. Turkey’s closing that pipeline would damage the Kurdish economy.

Turkey has been periodically trying to subdue their Kurds with President Erdogan blaming the ills he caused on Turkey’s Kurds. He is now attacking the Kurds in Syria with Russian air support. As of today, the first Kurdish enclave is almost defeated. Since they lived there with their families, all were either killed or pushed out of their homes farther into war-torn Syria. Erdogan has said they will go after the ones we were advising and supporting. Trump has just ordered our troops out of the area leaving the Kurds without air support and defenses against the Turkish and Russian bombing.

During Desert Storm, the first Iraq War, we received intelligence help and more from the swamp people living in their ancestral homeland in the Tigris and Euphrates River Deltas. After the war we allowed Saddam to kill thousands and destroy their wetlands.

Are the Kurds going to be left to die like the swamp people after we promised to protect them? What does it say about America’s word of support?

Cronkite’s Biggest Mistake

January 30 was the 50th anniversary of the Tet Offensive. For the younger readers the Tet Offensive was the largest battle during the Viet Nam War.

By 1968, the Vietnamese had been fighting occupiers and each other for centuries. The French were the latest colonizers and were defeated in the Dien Bien Phu Valley. As a part of the agreement giving control of the land to the Vietnamese, the country was split. Each had its own government elected by the people. Ho Chi Minh, a patriot, who had fought against the Japanese occupiers, pled for independence after World War II, and defeated the French, was elected the North’s leader. His fight with France had been supplied by Mao so he became a Communist. The South was more fertile and wealthier so it became “Democratic”. The agreement was supposed to allow a unification vote in a couple of years. It never happened. So Ho started a process to do it by force. The restive peasants, called the Viet Cong, became guerillas whose aim was to topple the government and unify the countries.

We got involved when Eisenhower sent transport planes to the French and devised the Domino Theory in which Mao would take over one Southeast Asian country after another. Kennedy expanded our involvement with advisors, Johnson added troops and bombing, and Nixon added more totaling 2,709,918 troops. When Tet occurred, we had over a half million troops in Viet Nam with a terrible U.S. military and civilian command and control.

After many interviews with the North Vietnamese, we now know the leadership wanted to cool down the fight by pulling most of their troops back to Cambodia, Laos, and home. The V.C. would continue their operations at a slower pace. Two leaders persuaded the others, including Ho, to make one last all-out effort to persuade the American people that the war was unwinnable. Causalities were expected to be necessarily high!

The plan was for a simultaneous attack by the NVA and V.C. on targets all over South Viet Nam. Small and large bases and small towns and large cities would be attacked by the V.C. The NVA would strike Northern bases and cities, the provincial capital and historical city of Hue being the most important. Over 10,000 NVA troops and hundreds of V.C. captured the city and executed thousands of civilians. U.S. Marines and South Vietnamese troops were sent to oust them. It took over two weeks and destroyed Hue.

The plan went wrong because South Viet Nam used the new calendar and the NVA used the old one (Tet Holiday was a day later in the North.) causing the V.C. to attack a day early. This allowed the response to start against a smaller force and warned against the larger one to come. Hue was the meat grinder the North wanted and the Marines killed most of the NVA and V.C. American losses were 216 killed and over 1,300 wounded. Over half the attacking force died.

Walter Cronkite, who was a CBS anchor and considered the most trusted man in American, saw the Hue battle personally. Based on his belief, he told his viewers the war was unwinnable causing support to dwindle. The fact is the V.C. was almost completely annihilated and the NVA had been badly damaged and pulled back across the borders.

In reality the war had been won but Americans didn’t know it. It continued until 1973 when we left a poorly led South Vietnamese army to fight a well-trained and led NVA. The South lasted until 1975.

Our battle deaths were 47,434 and 10,786 non-battle with 153,303 wounded (sources disagree some). North and South Vietnamese fighters and civilians could total well into millions.

Fifty years later we have kissed and made up!

I pride myself on being very knowledgeable about wars and their causes. World War II was the result of World War I’s peace treaty’s economic impact on Germany. An Austrian, who had joined the German Army, developed a patriotic fervor for Germany. Adolf Hitler had no political base or friends when he fell in with an anarchist group and took over leadership with his radical philosophy and oratory.

Hitler did not plan to lead Germany when he started but once on top of the wave he took advantage of the situation. By latching on to other disaffected groups, he was able to grow the Nazi party. Hitler did not hold an elected office until he became chancellor. He was elected by a minority of Germans and didn’t have their allegiance until Himmler had sufficiently brainwashed them.

How did the brainwashing happen? Himmler was a natural propagandist. He knew if he told enough lies often enough, people would finally believe them. The Nazis criticized the real media until they and their supporters were able to take over all opposition radio and newspapers. Afterwards the people only heard how great they are, how Germany has been mistreated by other countries, and corrupted by Jews and Slavic people. Purifying the nation by getting rid of these sub-humans and going to war was needed for the Aryan race to regain its rightful place.

Today European right wing parties are using Muslims as Hitler used the Jews to take power. Real News is being dismissed as Fake News (Sound familiar?) and their anarchist lies as the truth. Just as with Hitler, the different parts of government are being radicalized so the anarchists have better control of the people. This enables a few dedicated people to wrest control of a country.

Couldn’t happen here, could it?

My friends and relatives are concerned whether President Trump will start another war perhaps with North Korea. Such a war would cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians south of the border. Thousands of those would be American civilians working and living there. This does not count our soldiers and their dependents. A North Korean attack on Japan would escalate civilian and military deaths. If North Korea used its large supply of nukes, the numbers become millions instead of thousands.

Would Trump’s narcissism cause him to start a war just to boost his popularity and help him stay in the Oval Office? Will his military advisors follow the lead of Nixon’s advisors and take the suitcase away from him? Nixon was paranoid but otherwise stable. We cannot say the same of President Trump. Many people here and abroad wonder about his apparent dementia. Would he start a war and use the old tried and true phrase of, “Don’t change horses in the middle of the stream,” or some other justifying words? I think we have to be scared s – – – – – -s !

We Should Learn From History

I have studied battles and wars from the Peloponnese to our current battles with the Taliban and Isis. Every war has mistakes in tactics and strategy which cost the lives of many soldiers. Some mistakes are so bad it cost them a victory. Many mistakes have been because of bad leadership – either by the generals or the country’s leaders. The bigger the war, the bigger the consequences from a mistake.

Thousands died in the Civil War from bad tactical decisions. Hundreds of thousands in World Wars I and II from battles that should never have been attempted.

Setting aside whether or not we should have been in Viet Name, the was badly managed. General Westmoreland was a poor choice to command it. That was evident in 1967 but he wasn’t sacked (He was bumped up) for two more years.

President Johnson’s strategy of trying to keep it low key and directing the war from the White House cost lives and perhaps the war’s outcome. For instance, the planes that bombed North Viet Nam had to use the same entrance and exit points day after day so North Viet Nam piled their anti-aircraft weapons in those corridors.

To a great extent the current battle of words between Trump and Kim reminds me of the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Nasser’s big mouth caused Meir to attack before the Egyptian army could jump off.

The sanctions against North Korea remind me of our sanctions against Japan in 1941. I am sure others started by too much chest thumping and poorly conceived sanctions.

Knowing what has went on in the past causes me great concern. Boxing a country into a corner often starts a war neither wanted. Giving Iran a fair deal, avoiding a terrible war and giving North Korea a fair deal will save millions of lives and trillions of dollars.
