Politics Over Patriotism

Déjà vu all over again” and “history repeats itself” are two sayings which apply to Donald Trump’s claim to be able to quickly settle the Ukraine and Russian war. I laughed when he said it. Then I remembered past similar situations.

The first was former President Richard Nixon during his campaign against former Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. He said he had a secret plan to end the war within months. What we didn’t know is his people had been talking with the North Vietnamese. Whatever the plan was, it didn’t work.

The next scenario was former President Ronald Reagan’s people talking with the Iranians about keeping the hostages until he was sworn into the Presidency. They were released that day.

Former President George Bush II campaigned that Americans could handle money better than their government so he would cut taxes. Remember, former President Clinton was paying off the National Debt which was definitely more responsible than the people who were increasing their debt. His cuts started the huge increases in National debt.

Now Donald Trump says he can talk with his friend Putin and end the Ukraine War. He has pressured the Republicans in the House and Senate to reject an immigration bill with everything the Republicans want so he can use it in his campaign.

During the next eight months over a million more people will come across the Southern Border because the current laws can not stop them as per the Supreme Court during Trump’s administration. The Pandemic gave Trump a legal reason to close the border. When the pandemic died out the courts took away Biden’s authority. Trump says he could stop it but that will require passing a law that he couldn’t get passed during his term.

Rising Water

Sea levels in the Gulf of Maine have risen seven and a half inches in little more than the last hundred years. The Gulf is located between Maine and Nova Scotia. This has caused much shore erosion and the increase in more violent storms has destroyed centuries old buildings and piers. Storm surges are reaching higher than ever before, flooding modern buildings. Current levels have not had a noticeable effect on upstream communities but will with the projected rises.

The scientists at the University of Maine have been studying the increase along with their climate change research. The models of the effects of climate change over that one hundred year period closely matches the seven and a half inch increase. Their programs indicate the levels will rise another ten inches by 2050 and forty inches by 2100.

As you visit coastal cities, imagine the sea levels being ten inches higher in a couple of decades and four feet higher when a child born today retires. What cities will still exist, not only on the coast, but tens of miles inland? What will Washington D. C. do in just a few years since the area is already being flooded by high tides backing up the Potomac River? Where will the Federal Government move to the next few decades? Will the climate change deniers block the need to relocate cities and tens of millions of citizens until it is too late?

Think First

When I was in high school a classmate and I were walking in front of a line of stores. The pharmacy had a metal two sided sign hanging about eight foot above the sidewalk. He suddenly leaped up and gave it a karate chop, breaking a bone in his hand. Six weeks later he got the cast off and as we walked under that same sign he did the same thing with the same result. It was my first experience with “Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result.” I think I learned that lesson from his pain but why do so many people keep doing the same stupid things? We keep electing the same candidates with the same insane goals they know can not or should not happen. Examples are former President George Bush campaigned against raising the income tax former President Bill Clinton was using to balance the budget and pay off the National Debt. He said he could cut the taxes and get more revenue. He cut taxes and the deficit took off again. Former President Donald Trump cut taxes as he promised and the deficit ballooned even more.

We elect people who say they are going to help us but they increases the debt. Getting re-elected is more important to them than doing the hard work. The social media CEOs were just in front of an “angry Senate committee.” The CEOs pledged to cut their involvement with kids; so the Senate will create another committee to look into it which means the matter will quietly die. Why? This is the second time they assembled with the same result.

I know Gary learned a painful lesson about hitting a sign but Americans keep hitting the sign when they should know the result will hurt. To reduce the National Debt, we heed people who know a substantial increase in taxes now is critical.

Forgiveness Impossible

I remember a very religious born again Southern Baptist woman saying she supported Donald Trump because her religion allowed people to have a second chance through forgiveness of sins. One tenet of forgiveness is for a person to actually want to change. Trump’s personality has been built around lying, demeaning, deceit, crime, sexist and racist behavior. Trump is like a leopard that can not change its spots.

Picture a boiling teapot which must let out steam or explode: Trump just can not be quiet and truthful to people. He would explode if he was quiet. Trump has cut down his political opponents here and our allies around the world while having a love-fest with our enemies. During his presidency he told the world how misunderstood North Korea’s Kim is, and how great China’s Xi, and Russia’s Putin are! Trump recently reiterated his admiration for Putin and his own ability to negotiate a Ukrainian-Russian peace without saying any ideas.

His past strategy against business and legal opponents has always been to delay, delay, postpone, change attorneys and start over in court until the other side quits or goes broke from legal fees. That is the same strategy he is using in his campaign, all his indictments, and civil cases.

Trump cannot help himself. He has lied and cheated all his life. Narcissism and paranoia are almost genetic to him and has infected one of his children while the others have decided to stay away in the current run for President.

Famous Personality

When he first got into politics the people and news media considered him a joke. His next time he was considered a raving lunatic. Some of his ravings was telling the people they were the great people whose blood was being contaminated by inferior people. Although not religious he convinced the people that non christian people are bad for the country. He incited riots by his words but did not directly order them so he could have plausible deniability. After gaining control he required open shows of loyalty to him. He attacked his enemies with his rants and his words influenced his sycophants to deal with them.

Those are words from a 1996 documentary using films made in the 1930s and 1940s of Adolf Hitler’s rise and end. A saying in history classes is that history tends to repeat itself. History is full of examples throughout the centuries.

Falling Apart

The twentieth century was one of building infrastructure in America, bombed out Europe and third world countries. Highways, bridges, pipelines, and millions of buildings were built with the goal of building them as fast as possible for the day’s statistics and with the day’s materials. That building boom made us the country we are today.

Past President Dwight Eisenhower started the interstate system because of his experience before the war and trying to cross the country with a battalion of troops and their equipment. It was a terrible experience. His choice was the Nazi built Autobahn’s thick highways and taking a century to build. He chose fast to spend billions on maintenance. The state and cities did the same. Our National Emblem today could be a pothole.

With new roads and expanded population we needed to cross rivers and, like the highways, we built bridges with a lifespan of less than a century for the traffic at the time. Every year we have major bridges falling into the river and lots of lesser ones that do not make the news. Often cars go down, too.

Pipelines carry many products from one area to another and to our homes. Every year we have major leaks with disastrous accidents involving thousands of gallons of oil contaminating waters or blowing up buildings. These pipelines wear from the fluid flowing through them and normal rusting. Steel lines don’t last forever.

In European countries people are living in buildings that were built hundreds of years ago. Many multi-family building are being torn down after a few decades because they were not built to last.

This country is seeing how building fast and without planning for growth and conditions means second class infrastructure that needs to be redone at tremendous cost. We need to rebuild what we have and build lots more for future needs.

On The Fence Or Not

My wife and I are senior citizens who have voted since the early seventies. My parents were staunch Democrats and hers were just as strong Republicans. We are bipartisan independents and have voted both sides of the fence and on top of it. We are possibly a dying breed of moderates. If given the choice of a liar, thief, and a borderline insane person and his supporters or a moderate liberal, we will support and vote for the liberal.

I believe we both voted for Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Perot, Gore, Kerry, Obama, Clinton, and Biden. We believe a president should be concerned more with the “truth, justice, and the American way”. Yes, we would like a super person who can think for themselves – not like the Bush/Cheney pairing – support Democratic allies against others, stand up to blackmailing, stand behind their words, and most of all, think about the long term and not the next election cycle.

We admire politicians who push their goals and do not demean their opponents like some GOP radicals are doing. Our country is strong when we can work together in bi-partisan comprises. We want a President that reaches a hand out to both sides of the aisle to get equitable laws passed.

At this moment we would like to see the Republicans nominate Nikki Haley or Chris Christie. Both have the personality to work with both sides no matter which party controls the House and the Senate. Both are honest and were good governors.

Deciding who to vote for if one of them is the GOP nominee will be challenging. If it is Trump, then it is an easy decision for the third time.

The Water Is Rising Now

Mel Gibson starred in a movie called “Water World.” It was about the world after the glaciers on Greenland and Antarctica had melted, flooding the cities and most of the land. In the movie the surface was more than a thousand feet high. The actual depth would be about 275 feet higher than today.

Before they melt a century or two off in the future some possible events could happen making that far off eventuality come very soon, perhaps a year or two. Greenland has more ice than Antarctica’s shelves. What many people know is Greenland has several volcanoes but did they know two are under the glaciers producing a little melting Image if they started spewing lava under the ice causing them to melt while sliding off the island. All that additional water would raise the Atlantic Oceans level a “Quick” 150 feet. Coastal cities would have little time to prepare to save the buildings, all they could do is evacuate.

Antarctica has earthquakes and volcanoes too. If one or two of the shelves broke loose and slid into the ocean, the seas would rise even more and faster in the Southern Hemisphere, Coastal cities and islands would again be drowned. The rise from Greenland’s glaciers would float the shelves off the rocks holding them in place.

Either of these events would lessen when the waters spread around the world’s oceans. Even then the coastal and many inland cities would still be permanently underwater. Florida, Louisiana and much of twenty states would be under water.

These geological events could happen today, tomorrow, or never but those glaciers in both places are already melting faster every year and raising the sea levels each year. Some cities are thinking, some are planning, and some are building to postpone the flooding. Others are doing nothing.

Maybe The Last Vote

Donald Trump said Nikki Haley is a traitor because she once supported him and has now turned against him. In addition she doesn’t agree with his policy on immigration and how to work with other countries.

She should have been ready with this response. Donald Trump is clinically insane. He is much more paranoid and vindictive than Richard Nixon and more misogynist than Bill Clinton. He follows the doctrines and behavior of Adolf Hitler.

Nixon had an enemies list which he had the Attorney General use the FBI and other agencies follow, wiretap, and harass those people. He had the Treasury Secretary use the Internal Revenue Services to audit them often and intensively.

Trump’s own words indicates how he feels about women. His treatment of his wives, those in beauty contests, and those women he dated, paid for, and was idolized by. Like Bill Clinton, Trump was good friend with Jeffrey Epstein.

Like Adolph Hitler, Trump has influenced an unstable group of people who follow his subtle directives against other groups of people. Like Nixon, Hitler had an enemies list but Hitler’s enemies were sent to concentration camps or killed. Trump’s need for power and adulation is like Hitler. It must be unconditional and absolute loyalty is demanded. An example of this is when he had several of his followers tell how great he is at a press conference while he sat nearby smiling with his arms crossed. Hitler had the swastika on everything while Trump has “MAGA” on flags, caps, shirts and an array of other items.

In his final days Hitler told Generals to destroy everything to punish the people. Trump has said America will be destroyed if he isn’t in the White House.

2,868,686

I keep hearing politicians and pundits say Donald Trump should be on the ballot so the people can decide and not the courts. I might agree with that if the people would actually be the ones making the decision who should be in the Oval Office. The people don’t make that decision. Why? The 2016 election said Clinton won by 2,868.686 votes but Trump was declared the winner by the Electoral College.

Another was Al Gore and George Bush. The Supreme Court stopped the counting of votes in Florida so the State went into Bush’s Electoral side giving him the win by five vote. Gore won the popular vote with 543,895 more votes.

When people say let the voters decide, apparently those two elections were not decided by the people. The Founders in 1787 decided the people weren’t smart enough to decide so they setup a system where “smart” people could make the decision for their “dumb” fellow citizens. Their intelligence was shown to be faulty when they declared the one with the second number of electoral votes would be the Vice-President!
