Shed A Tear

A few decades ago an iconic advertisement showed an Indian on a hill overlooking a highway with polluting vehicles and trash blowing around. He had a single tear coming down his cheek showing his sorrow about how Americans have destroyed what was once a beautiful land.

Today he might shed more than one tear because we may have cleaned up some of he blowing trash by putting it into mountains he could stand on. Each of the vehicles are emitting far less lead free fumes but now there are many times more vehicles polluting the air with CO2. The Indian saw smoke pouring out of stacks and trash floating in the River. We have greatly reduced the stack pollution and the floating trash. Back then few Americans were concerned about global warming and how the pollution would change the ecosystem so rapidly. Droughts are destroying forests and insects that were restricted to warm winters are not able to live hundreds of miles farther North and at higher altitudes. The same with animals and birds moving farther North as the climate warms. Some move expanding their reach which others move to resist the warming climate. An excellent example is the Flamingo that was once restricted to mostly Southern Florida can now be found in summer as far North as Maine and Minnesota because the long summers and rising seawater is destroying their former nesting areas.

Perhaps the future is so disastrous that an old song may be more apropos than the tear. Maybe the Indian should have been singing “Cry Me A River”.

Sumo In Politics

Sumo wrestling is a courteous sport between two men. They can slap with open hands push each other, try to throw their opponent out of the ring, or touch the surface with any part of the body except the sole of the foot. Before and after they observe the proper etiquette. The winner usually offers the loser a hand up and after returning to their location in the ring, they bow to each other in respect. Tournaments are for fifteen days where every fighter will fight each of the other fighters. All of the fighters are split into two dressing rooms each day so they are not in the same room with that day’s opponent. The next day they may be sitting next to their former opponent or the next day’s opponent without any conflict.

This is basically how the Senators and Representatives used to act before the crazy right wingers lost all propriety in their contact with the Democrats and Moderates in their own party. This behavior started about twenty years ago when the radicals were elected with a burn-it-down philosophy and reducing the five day work week to four so they could campaign at home. Before they dined together, played together, and vacationed with families together. Like the wrestlers, they would argue tooth and nail on the floor for their point and then compromise for a common law. Not everybody got what they wanted but legislation was done for the good of the majority of Americans and not the radical few of either party.

Now, politics is a blood sport catering to the radical wings of both parties without regard to the majority of Americans. Being nice to a member of the other party is political death. Governor Chris Christie might have been the GOP nominee in 2016 if not for hugging Obama.

Lie To Me Again – I like It

I have voted in every election since I built my home in 1978. I have realized that many people campaigning for elected office say they stand for something and then either ignore the matter or flip to the other side. They often flip back for the next election correctly knowing their constituency will believe them again.

There is an old story about the French Revolution. Two men were standing in a doorway, seeing a crowd marching up the street, one says to the other, “What do they want?”. The other says, “I will find out so I can lead them.”. Does that sound familiar? How many say they will support the goals of some radical group just to get elected even if the result is bad for the people and the country.

Some will do everything to stay in office, even join an insurrection as occurred on January 6, 2021. Immediately after Republicans took the floor to lamblaste then President Donald Trump, only to travel to Mar A Largo to kiss his body part to get back in his goodwill. In spite of all the indictments and Trump’s statements they support him just to keep his mob’s support. Does that sound familiar?

I don’t know if other countries’ leaders lie to their people as often or as much as ours do to us. Few other countries’ voters are as complacent as ours since our voter turnout is so light. We look at Vladimir Putin’s control of Russian Media. His Cyber people work to reduce some groups of Americans going to the polls. Disinformation in American Campaign goes back to George Washington’s time.

Americans say they don’t believe their political leaders when they are truthful but listen to and are influenced by the most outrageous lies and agendas. A great example is a Trump Rally.

Where Does Climate Rank?

I was born into a family shortly after World War II ended that had gone through the Depression and World War I. We had all the money. England gave or leased America’s islands and bases around the world for loans. England and France were losing colonies by politics or revolt. China was going Communist while Nationalists went to Taiwan.

We were the only super power with Joseph Stalin clamping down on the Eastern Europe they had captured during World War I. The USSR was developing nuclear weapons making them a military competitor. To increase the fear and polarization children were taught in school to hide under their desks when USSR missiles exploded nearby. People on my block built bomb shelters in their back yards during the Cuban Crisis.

China was a minor player so every country and local war fell into either of the two camps with few being independent and playing one pole against the other.

In the 1980s the USSR came apart, China was being boosted by globalization of manufacturing, and the fervor of World War III was gone. The economies of most countries skyrocketed. The World Leaders started to see the danger of climate change in the early 2000s.

Now we have Russia invading former Soviet States, Iran’s religious Nationalism creating conflicts in the Middle East, China’s rise in military expansion in the South China Sea and threats to Taiwan, as well as the rise of Authoritarianism and Dictatorships. Ethnic and Religious distrust in many countries exacerbated by migration creates instability. Geopolitics has not been this unstable in at least sixty years.

Where does “working to cut emissions” rank in this environment?

Waterfront Living

Since 2000 the Gulf of Florida has gotten 4 inches higher It might not sound like much but the Keys are not much more than a few feet higher. I do not know how they survive a major hurricane’s storm surge. Maybe that is why most buildings are ramshackle.

The Florida Governor might be a climate change denier but the state pumps money into Miami and other coastal cities to counter rising sea levels. Miami is raising street levels so ground floors of today will become basements in the near future. The future of the Keys and islands on both coasts will be under water in the next few decades.

Conservative estimates for 2040 for ocean and Gulf waters to raise another twelve inches. The number is considered to be a low estimate because most computer programs have not been able to incorporate the rapidly changing factors and physics of warming seas. Warmer seas means greater number of storms and hurricanes with greater intensity. The latter means more category three, four, and five hurricanes with two and three story storm surges. Each foot of sea rise means those surges go farther inland.

Unless we figure out some way to reduce global warming or massive volcano activity happens, coastal cities from San Antonio, Texas to Bar Harbor, Maine will be under water in a century or so. Think of Florida being mostly underwater. Disney World will change. They will be building beach front businesses for a few more decades before it goes under water.

Old adages apply to the future of the World and especially the United States. The frog and boiling water and eating dessert first in case you are not around for the entree definitely apply. The change is rapidly increasing but many in American leadership would rather cater to money and duped voters than to take action to save the US.

Twenty Percent

Imagine if things had gone differently in the Pacific Theater in World War II and we had to have a negotiated peace with Japan. For peace we would have had to give up all the land West of the Continental Divide. Afterwards the Japanese would have overtly moved people into the remaining eighty percent getting citizenship, starting or buying businesses, and moving into houses and apartments, This would embed them into society and start the change of our culture while keeping their own. After some time they would be putting Japanese citizens into Congress and the Senate and possibly the White House.

If this sounds preposterous, it is exactly what President Vladimir Putin is doing in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Georgia fought Russia without any help and lost two whole states. In the other eighty percent live about one-hundred-thousand Russians of varying economic status. Some came to avoid being drafted to fight in Ukraine while others brought lots of money to buy into businesses. Moldova has the same situation except the Russians took over without much of a fight since Moldova has little military might.

If Putin is allowed to keep Ukraine’s twenty percent they soon would be increasing their infiltration. The Ukrainian President before Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a Putin dupe. Millions of Ukrainians forced him out of office. He fled to Russia.

As long as Putin is fighting in the Ukraine he will not be looking at any other former Soviet State. Several of them are now NATO. Maybe Putin will not use his military and invade but use his Cyber troops to destroy their will to resist his having his people put in office. [Cyber troops are teams dedicated to swaying and manipulating public opinion through coordinated internet and social media campaigns organized by governments, powerful parties, or corporations.] Think about his Cyber successes here and in Europe.

Poke the Bear

No, this isn’t about Russia that traditionally is called a Bear but Israel. An old adage is don’t poke a bear because its reaction won’t be pleasant. The moral is to think before acting and think what the results could be. Sometimes the reaction seems like an immediate mistake but will actually get the long term desired result.

Hamas poked the Israeli Bear hoping to get the desired backlash of death and destruction to the people in Gaza. Around the Arab world the people are protesting by the hundreds of thousands in their capitals. How can their leaders stay in power and work with Israel? Saudi Arabia and some other Arab countries were opening diplomatic offices with Israel and negotiating trade relations.

If Hamas gets the Israeli army to invade the Palestinian civilian deaths will skyrocket creating more dissent causing problems for Arab and Israeli leaders. History shows urban warfare is a disaster for both sides – think Stalingrad or our misadventure in Iraq.

Continued bombing of apartment buildings kills civilians which generates greater dissent and pressure for other organizations like Hezbollah to join the war. They have over 160,000 missiles to fire at Israel and the army should it invade Lebanon. The last time Israel went in they pulled out after a couple of months. They claimed victory but it was a bloody stalemate. It would be much worse this time because Hezbollah has many more well-trained troops and much more Iran-supplied equipment designed to fight Israel’s army and air force.

Hamas poked the Bear and hasn’t yet got all the results they wanted but those results may be imminent. So far, the PLO on the Eastern side has just been protesting but if all three organizations gang up on Israel it would be very bad for the bear.

Dates to Remember

Our lives seem to revolve around dates. We remember our birth date, our partner’s birth date, and hopefully our wedding date. If we have kids we are supposed to remember those dates. Some try to remember parents and siblings birthdays. Today those dates are plugged into our digital devices so we don’t actually have to use our brains. The devices can even be set up to warn us days in advance.

However, there are many dates we remember that seem to be almost mandatory for most of us. Three holidays we easily remember are January 1, July 4, and December 25. Others are not so happy dates like 9/11-Twin Towers, and December 7. Sometimes it is only the year that is special like 1945 for the end of World War II or 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

As a history buff, my mind was filled with dates for events in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. As a military history student, my dates went back to long forgotten wars thousands of years ago. There does seem to be a correlation between age and memory. As one gets older more and more unnecessary dates are forgotten.

If a person did not live through an event, how many of us would remember the date it occurred? Millions of Americans were yet to be born when 9/11 occurred so how long will that date mean something to them? Many of our holidays today mean little more than a parade, party time, or no-work-day. For millions, Memorial Day is the Indy 500 Race. Many important days are already forgotten by most of us – how sad!

Times Are A-Changing

My Mother was in her fifties in the 1960s when Rock-N-Roll and the Hippie culture became the norm. Her complaints may have influenced me to keep my hair length at an inch at my nape instead of my former clipper cut. My music choice is now called the golden oldies of the 60s. My hair is thinner and my music is the same so that is what I consider the norm should be.

I cannot understand why anyone would want to shave their head to look like what the movies made aliens look. To be fair we used to use the Dick Tracy term of “Cue Ball.”

Millions of men are growing long beards which can only be to show their masculinity. Are they taken in by some actors trying to look rough cut. I would think hygiene and sex would be a problem.

Why do man and women cover themselves with tattoos that they can’t see? I don’t sit at a table with servers with tattoos up their neck or on their arms. My generation is very likely to associate those people with poor hygiene and therefore holding our plates abhorrent. A big business has sprung up on removing or covering them up. A friend’s daughter put a tattoo on her hip to remind her of a dead cousin. Does she think of him sitting on a commode?

People seem to go out of their way to look tough and gangster-like. Why can’t people look normal now or is this just a fad that will die out in a few years? If the media caused this behavior then perhaps it can bring it back to the normal American Culture. Is the result of, or cause of, the divisiveness today?

Voters Have Rights

Too often people are elected to an office after an election with only thirty percent of the electorate voting. Those people go into office with him or her to do what that small number of constituents want done. If a person voted against the official then they have the right to complain but if they didn’t bother to vote, they don’t have the moral right.

Of fifty, sixty, or even seventy percent of voters staying home a small number of people are able to take control of a government and its people. Adolph Hitler came into power with the support of a few thousand actual believers who controlled a few million supporters who thought his propaganda goals was needed. Of course his Brown Shirts beat up or killed those who complained or were the objects of his scorn. In Germany’s 1930s and 1940s the organization was called Nazi for “NAtional SoZialistiche Deutsch ArBeiterparteI.” Is the Maga-Movement the same just because it has all the same markers? It has the personality, lack of political experience, devotees, lies, political violence, minorities to suppress, and desire to destroy the justice and government.

If Americans value Democracy then they must vote in every election or lose what we value most!
