Losing Respect

We like to go to the Rockies for vacations. We often stop at the tribal museums and talk to the locals while viewing the exhibits. I have had many conversations with tribal members from Northern Sioux to Apaches in Arizona. We talked about culture, history, and how they see themselves being treated today.

A Navaho man who retired after 20 years was the most eloquent and open. We stopped at his wife’s shop that was a little more than a lean-to with shelving and a counter displaying silversmithing craftwork. He and I talked about many subjects. One was his life as a rancher on a small ranch we could see from the back of the shop. It was in a canyon just off the little Colorado about 300 feet down from the shop. He is a retired 20-year Army Veteran.

This is the essence of his and his tribe’s viewpoints. One, they like the term Indian and not “First Nation” or “Indigenous peoples,” which they oddly consider names invented by the white man to further eliminate their culture. (The only Indian I talked to who liked those two names was a young Sioux.) On the subject of sports teams using Indian names, he said villages played other villages and tribes played other tribes. He said using their Indian names and logos kept their culture alive outside the tribes and shows respect. Eliminating their name from teams and logos is another way of forgetting them.

He thought the movie “Ghost Whispers” helped to make the Navaho more visible by fighting with instead of against the white man.

If Indians have no problem with the names and logos, why do white people? Do we want to bury them farther?

Religious Exemption Excuses

Americans are starting to tire of people claiming a religious exemption for not complying with a law or regulation they don’t like. Too often these people have no connection to any organized religion.

Some companies want to save money by reducing the coverage of insurance for their employees. They claim the separation of church and state to get an exemption and then to try to make the state do what they want. By demanding the state comply they are forcing others to believe as they do which, of course, violates the very idea they use to get their way.

Today we have stupid people who don’t want the Covid vaccine so they suddenly decide it is against their religion. Some ministers have even written letters supporting the views of people they don’t know. One minister told his flock not to get the shots and then changed his view when several of his flock died. The people died because he said God would protect the righteous.

All of these exemptions avoid the free will pillar of the Christian religion. These people miss the point that scientists invented these wondrous vaccines to save us just as they invented so many of the things we all feel we couldn’t live without.

In reality most of the exemptions people feel they are entitled to is actually just their misguided political views. Doing so is just an extension of the “Big Lie.”

A Boulder Picks Up Speed

Sometimes knowledge is comforting but this is scary in the extreme. We know the climate is changing and changing rapidly due to increased levels of carbon in the air. The CO2 we are spewing in the air has been the major cause of the temperature increase by our burning fossil fuels. Some of our damage is from burning natural gas, methane, which reduces the damage to CO2 levels. Methane is thirty times more damaging than carbon dioxide. We bring up methane from deep underground and animals create some, but the growing release is from gas well leakage and the thawing of the tundra. We are working to stop the well leakage but with each passing day thousands of megatons from the melting tundra are released blocking the radiant heat from escaping.

The damage we have caused is melting the Greenland glacier and some of the Antarctic glaciers. This plus heat expansion of the oceans is going to raise the oceans over thirty feet flooding the world’s coastal cities and hinterlands displacing over two billion people. The loss of all the world’s glaciers could raise the level to cover all of Florida, Louisiana, and several eastern states. The droughts and floods will increase in number and severity. Many areas that are now cool in winter will require air conditioning in a few decades.

We have unintentionally raised the temperature but we have pushed the boulder over the top of the hill and it is starting to take up speed. We are trying to slow it down and probably too late. What we don’t know is how deep is the valley it is rolling into and how wide before the boulder can start rolling up the next hill. Will we still be around?

National Debt

As I have said many times, the National Banks around the world begged President Clinton to not buy back any more treasury bonds because they used them as their National Reserve. All the thirty year, most of the twenty year and some of the ten year bonds were gone. We were on the way to paying down our National Debt.

Then along came Bush II and his tax cut which reversed the pay down. He cut taxes and increased spending just as Reagan had done but Reagan saw the debt grow and increased taxes. Obama continued the ruinous Bush tax cut causing the debt to increase to over twenty trillion in his eight years. Trump cut taxes in his first year and ran the debt up 7.8 trillion more to about 28 trillion today.

Both parties are responsible for this debt because they passed the tax cuts, hamstrung the IRS, and passed the bills spending the borrowed money. Today Minority Leader McConnell complains about the Biden and the Democrats running up the Debt but he has been Majority Leader for twelve of the last fourteen years. He pushed the ceiling raise in Bush and Trump years and fought against it in the Obama years and this year even though Trump ran the increase of debt up to June. McConnell doesn’t want to pay his bills.

The best way to fix the debt ceiling is to raise the taxes back to rates of the booming Clinton years or even the end of Bush I years. Let’s not create fifty or ninety year bonds passing along yesterday’s tax cuts insanity to future generations!

Here’s the Rub

How often is the truth twisted or totally ignored by our political leaders of both parties, the military and people who want to divide us? We have been lied to ever since the rich and privileged in England convinced the gullible that the New World would make them rich landowners.

The reasons for the deceptions are corruption, greed, power, and belief it is for our good. The latter is really in the eyes of the beholder. A recent one is finding out we have been allowing massive theft of our funds and corruption in Afghanistan and Iraq. We pumped billions of cash and credit to both countries that was pocketed by Americans, Iraqis, and Afghans while our government allowed it. For our own good we weren’t told. What if we all knew as President Biden and others knew, would we have left earlier?

Some media tried to tell us Saddam didn’t have any nuclear, biologic, or chemical weapons as the administration was claiming. It was a complete and total lie just so they could avenge the remarks some right wingers made about not getting Saddam the first time. Would Saddam still be in power and Iraq be in such a mess if we hadn’t invaded?

Today “The Big Lie” is threatening to tear American apart. We are finding that many of the political elite have tried to overthrow our government. All so those people can dupe other people into committing crimes to keep them in power and to avoid prosecution.

Shortages Vs Inflation

The news if filled with so-called experts saying we are heading into a period of high inflation while others say the increases are due to shortages and therefore transitory. The latter is the most likely but the food inflation is going to get much worse.

Pictures of thousands of vehicles parked bumper to bumper and door to door on parking lots and fields are because of the chip shortage. When dealers get a new care with a chip, they don’t need to negotiate a price. It may be sold before it arrives. Since few cars are coming to the dealers, used cars are in greater demand exploding their price. When chips become available the prices of new and used will fall.

Most other items are in temporarily short supply due to the sudden surge in demand. Supply chains are still being disrupted by Covid and lack of materials. As the transportation and supply chains become efficient prices will drop.

Food is another matter. Global warming is now and will, in the foreseeable future, have a huge impact on food production. The Colorado River irrigates millions of acres of farmland which will shortly become useless. Thousands of farmers didn’t plant many of the vegetables we eat. Fruit and nut trees will die from lack of water. Water is being withheld from hay fields that feed the dairy and beef cattle. The lack of rain and grass and hay means the Texas and Oklahoma ranches are going to cull their herds. That will flood the market in short term and raise them in the long term. Droughts and floods in other areas will create shortages and raise prices of those products.

The future will have much price instability as the economy tries to absorb all the influences and instabilities with the effect of climate change on the world and increasing populations.

It’s the Economy Stupid!

Is the world ready to understand we have known global warming is going to change the world’s climate to the detriment of life on the Blue Marble for over half a century? For political reasons many people are publicly denying the Earth is warming influencing people to disbelieve in Science and even what they see for themselves.

The change is going to happen whether or not something isn’t done to ameliorate the increasing damage to the environment. Beyond the politics, the deniers are concerned about the change in the structure of our economy. The fossil fuel industry is a pillar of our economy and employs millions of people from lease scouts, geologists, drillers, pipe manufacturers, truckers, refiners, manutainence, gas station operators, and all the people who build engines and their parts. Add to the petroleum business the thousands who are coal miners, transporting coal by truck and rail, and the few coal-burning coal-fired generating plants.

Of course politicians have some concern about the loss of jobs but it’s the owners and stockholders who put money into their pockets and campaign chests which concern them the most. The loss of those jobs is going to occur and the sooner the better to prevent the worst scenario from happening.

Bill Clinton’s campaign advisor George Stephanopoulos told him, “it’s the economy stupid” because he saw that was what won elections and that is why politicians are scared to face the facts.

Generations to Come

What will the future generations think about us, their ancestors, in last years of this century and early in the next? Will they think of us as we think of our slave owning ancestors? Will they be ashamed? Will they criticize us for the damage we had done to the climate and the ecosystems?

Will they have had to change their living conditions so much that many areas of the world became completely uninhabitable? Wealthy people will be able to adapt to the increased temperatures, droughts, flooding, dangerous weather patterns, and rising seas. How will the rest of the people who do not have the money to compensate for the changes survive?

Will those generations to come want to know why so many people denied what was happening for short term greed and power? Will we all be cursed by them for not making those in power stop the disaster they are living in a hundred years from how? Will the generations to come understand we knew what disasters they would have to contend with and didn’t care? The legacy of those in power today who do not do all they can to stop climate change will be worse than slave traders of the past.

Send this letter to your elected officials and polluters. Maybe it will move them because every day is critical and because every day we waste makes life for coming generations worse.

Build Back Better

Never have those words been more appropriate than today. President Biden’s motto “Build Back Better” means we will be fixing what’s broken or too old to function as needed for current requirements.

After Katrina we spent over a billion to try to fortify New Orleans. Ida hit close. The levees held but the reinforced pylons didn’t so power went out. The new ones will be even sturdier. We will probably waste millions on helping the few nuts who want to live on Grand Isle. Most of the homes are about fifteen feet above the sand to avoid surge damage. Wind damage got the buildings, the above and below ground utilities, and the only road onto it. Many of the towns, roads, and levees in the hinterlands were destroyed again from the Ida rains with Nicholas dropping another foot.

Protecting those flooded New Jersey towns every future Ida is going to be expensive and difficult to Build Back Better. New York City lost several people in flooded basement apartments. The subways and tunnels flooded too, but not as bad as Hurricane Sandy. Protecting the city and suburbs around the Hudson needs to be protected by a trillion dollar system. Sandy was a surge and Ida was rain so the fix will be difficult.

A “Permanent” fix concerning the regular seawater flooding of Miami and Charleston will cost tens of billions to Build Back Better.

We may have learned our lesson when we stupidly put Puerto Rico’s infrastructure back as it was instead of upgrading and fortifying to withstand the next storm. Build Back Better.

Time Machine

Are we in some kind of time machine because it really feels like the 1930s. There’s an old saying about history repeats itself. The world was in the throes of right wing nationalism. Some countries managed to avoid the take-over but others didn’t and World War II resulted.

Today we are learning how close Trump came to overthrowing the democratically elected Senate and Congress, the Department of Justice, and Department of Defense. General Milley blocked Trump from a military action inside or outside the country. Trump had appointed people to those departments who he thought would help him to overthrow the government. They backed away from following his directives. His advisors went along to the point of actually participating in his plan before telling him all of his appointees and advisors would quit. He backed down. The January six insurrection was designed to allow Trump to have plausible deniability.

Trump’s advisors and sons have been trying to set up right wing nationalists in Brazil, France, Italy and other countries. Brazil’s Bolsonaro openly says he is a Trumpist. Bannon and Trump Jr. have made many trips there to help Bols1naro.

Nationalist want to radicalize people who will support a dictatorship. Once in control they will take over opposing media as Bolsonaroand Putin have done. They and others have jailed or killed anyone opposing them.

Hitler, Mussolini and Stalin started the same way. Is the same thing happening today? Seems like it.
