Can History Repeat Today

Is it some kind of gigantic coincidence so many Nationalists have taken power or attempting to take their country’s leadership positions? Philippines, Poland, Venezuela, Russia, Turkey, Israel, and the United States among others have openly Nationalist leaders. Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Belarus, and a few others have growing movements and political parties hoping to take control.

Nationalism means it’s me against them. The ‘them’ is often other countries, but more likely some easily identifiable ethnic group. One of the oldest targets is Jews. It was Hitler’s choice to explain Germany’s ills. The current European bogey man is the Syrian refugees.

Here Nationalism is Muslims and brown-skinned people. Just as elsewhere, their use of ethnic groups is to stimulate fear and hatred in people they want the support of in their quest for power. When this dangerous Nationalism erupts from the depths of depravity responsible Americans and Europeans have been trying to eliminate. It reminds me of the rise of the Nazi Party.

Just because the current administration didn’t rise from the beer haus of Munich, but in four-star restaurants, hotels, and grand homes of billionaires doesn’t mean it isn’t as dangerous. The Nazi loyalty oaths of 1935 sounds like the loyalty demands Trump says he expects of his appointees. Numerous times he has raved he requires absolute loyalty of his people. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has incurred his wrath because he is an honorable man which conflicts with his loyalty to Trump. Many others have left because of their conscious overriding loyalty. Too bad a lot of Germans hadn’t written letters to the big German papers or contributed to books about Hitler in the early 1930s.

John S. McCain III, an American Icon

We signed the petition for Senator McCain in 1999 to be the presidential nominee because he was a moderate, put America first, and crossed the aisle for his many bi-partisan bills. He lost because the Bush II campaign smeared his character and his family. John was too much of a gentleman to sink to Bush II’s lies and character assignation.

The second time he was given the Bush II campaign people and forced to the right. His campaign didn’t do any character smearing of Obama. Non-associated ones did! John even told a woman Obama is a good man when she voiced a smearing statement. I doubt if any other candidate would have said anything, most would have agreed and taken it forward.

I might have voted for John if he had picked a decent Vice-President and hadn’t changed his core values to get votes from the far right. Would he have really gone far right or stayed in the center? I couldn’t be sure but having an idiot one heart beat from the oval office was too much to chance. John’s health had not been good so his choice of Vice-President was critical. I think that choice cost him millions of independent votes and the election.

He may be one of the last moderate Republican Senators since the others are retiring this year or in 2020. He really represented the way our leaders should act. Few if any in Washington, D.C. could match his code of honor. Most Americans will miss you John S. McCain III.

Tariffs Hit Homeowners

I built my house thirty years ago and it is worth much more than I paid for the materials. As long as I don’t buy any appliances I couldn’t believe Trump’s tariff fights would affect my finances. I had to connect the dots to see how I have just got dinged.

A few weeks ago I read where home builders were expecting to pay $4,000 to $6,000 or more for the lumber to build homes. Since I am not building a new one, it is not my problem. Yesterday I got my house insurance bill. It had gone up because the cost to rebuild my house had risen.

So we have to pay more so his billionaire friends can raise the price of wood from American trees and override the Wildlife Preservation restrictions to cut in protected areas. Note his comment on the need to cut more trees to reduce fires. That’s another dot to connect.

It’s costing me another few percent. As new houses are built and sold I bet our real estate tax will rise too!

Is Morris Aging Rapidly?

On Friday I was parked in Rezin Orthopedic Center’s parking lot waiting for my wife to have her physical therapy session when I noticed the age of those entering and leaving. There was a mid-teen, four in their 30-40s, and all the others in 60s, 70s, and probably 80s. Late that afternoon we shopped in Jewel. I saw six kids under 6, six adults over 40 and all the other shoppers were well into AARP age.

I had not noticed before the aging of Morris. We have kids in school, which means some parents are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, but I don’t see them except as employees in the stores. Maybe they all shop in Wal-Mart or on line because I shop only at Aldi’s, Jewel, Menards, and Ace Hardware. My street used to have lots of kids but now only 3 are still in school.

Is it just my perception or is our area aging more than the rest of Illinois? Granted Americans are living longer and the population pyramid is becoming more rectangular as a whole, but is Morris more AARP than school age? To me Morris has more over 50 than under 20. Is Morris becoming a retirement community? The 2020 census will tell us if I am right.

If it is true, then we are obviously overbuilt in the area schools and should consolidate them. Public services should be biased more towards our increasing age. To keep people in their homes, we need more home healthcare workers and those to be paid a living wage. This will help us to stay home instead of having to go to a nursing home. The personal and public economics of staying home are overwhelming. All nursing homes are understaffed so the answer isn’t more nursing homes but services to keep us in our own homes.

Ethos of Violence

I think the good people in the violence-ridden areas of Chicago feel impotent on changing their neighborhoods. Priests and ministers can stage marches and close highways but protests are just a feel-good activity accomplishing little if anything. Like most problems today it not my fault, it’s caused by some government and they must fix it.

The police can’t be the mythical Bobbies of England where the bad people drop their guns and put their hands up when the Bobby blows a whistle. Thanks to the gun manufactures and the NRA, we are awash with guns. A few days ago a 12 year-old boy shot a 12 year-old girl and a drive-by shot a 3 year-old. When the police get the necessary aggressive posture they are criticized by the people they are trying to protect. They are not getting the necessary help in arresting the bad people. I understand people may fear retribution but they can’t expect police to end the violence without neighborhood support.

The ethos of violence must be changed. One way to reduce the violence would be if parents, wives, grandparents, and relatives would turn in guns to be melted. Less guns means less violence. Instead of protesting expecting somebody else to do something, do it yourself. President John Kennedy’s words can be revised slightly to; Ask not what others can do for you community, ask what you can do for your community.

Sleight of Hand

I don’t know if the President is coordinating the news releases or some incompetent staffers who are well over their head. When the administration does something stupid they try to get the public to look at something less stupid or inane. Today they revoked former CIA Director John Brennan’s security clearance. The notification was dated over two weeks previously. This release which was pulled back so today’s date could be shown on the text (another screw-up).

Was this done because they wanted to change the public’s attention from the media’s editorial on Trump’s attack on the media , his self-inflicted wounds, the Manafort trial, the negative impact of tariffs, and/or the Mueller investigation? Has the wounds become so massive that it is impossible to keep diverting attention from one screw-up by creating another one (a sleight of hand).

These self-inflicted wounds occur almost every day and often several times in the same day. Since the President wants to be in the spotlight, he is the cause of almost all the wounds himself. Some current and past White House staffers have commented on his mental capacity and stability. His tweets have given mental professionals cause to publicly question his condition. His staff tries to control and moderate his constant need for attention and admiration. His demand for the Senate Majority Leader, the Speaker of the House, and several cabinet members to “Tell you how great I am” while he sat like a king near the lectern indicates a 26th amendment possibility.

He once said “I could kill somebody on Madison Avenue and still get elected”, or his statement “you knew I was a snake before you elected me.” Perhaps his 30% base is ignorant of his screw-ups or are just stupid.

Vote For Financial Responsibility

Morris is an unusual Community in many respects. The most unusual is the town’s great financial shape. Perhaps it has been luckier than most small towns, big cities, states, and the federal government. Responsible leadership has helped here.

Illinois has been mismanaged for decades. Governor Thompson’s Chief of Staff was later Governor Jim Edgar. He was credited at the time, now discredited, for coming up with the pension payment plan to balance their budget. Instead of making the payment needed to keep the plans current, they ramped the payments so they paid a little causing the more and more to be paid later. It just kicked the can down the road. Governor Blagojevich was faced with a budget deficit so he borrowed money from the plans and didn’t make the needed payment.

Reducing the income tax is also a contributing factor in the states’ budgetary operating deficit, its yearlong balance of payment deficit, and pension shortfalls.

The deficits can be fixed with bi-partisan action and doing away with all the income tax deductions and exemptions. We should vote only for people with the guts to fix Illinois’ problem instead of just getting re-elected. Most other states don’t have these reductions and exemptions.

The Trump tax cut has put our country into much deeper debt. Instead of paying down our national debt it is exploding during the time we should be cutting it. If we are increasing our debt during good times, what will we do during the upcoming bad times?

Both the state and federal governments need to act responsibly and quit wasting money to get re-elected and increase revenue before it becomes unmanageable. Make the person wanting to represent us explain exactly how they expect to solve the problem whether it is raising taxes, cutting expenses, or something else. Perhaps a thousand word explanation of their personal ideas, without mentioning the other party or anyone in the other party, would help us decide who to vote for. If they can’t tell us, perhaps it’s because they have a dearth of ideas.

Do Unto Others

I do not believe one’s religion should consider itself better than any other because their belief should be their own. If someone doesn’t believe in any God then it is their right, too. If a person believes Jesus is the son of a God or a prophet or even the second to last prophet, then it is their right. If they believe in a multi-armed woman or an elephant God, it is their right. If their God is the emperor or some very fat guy, it is their right. My mother told me to treat everyone the same because it is their right to believe what they want.

Now the Attorney General has decided to put together a task force to ensure we have a Christian country. This country was founded on not being a Christian or Catholic or Jewish because the reason for most discrimination and wars were religious. They wanted a country with the morals of religion but not a mandatory religion. This task force smack of a state supported and protected belief. Turkey’s President Erdoğan has changed the secular constitution to a state supported Islamic one. He has locked thousands up and fired tens of thousands more for disagreeing with his changes. Other countries have become a one religion nation.

Could it happen here? I would have doubted it a couple of years ago. Now we have an administration that is against Muslims. The alt-right devotees are anti-Jewish and they are supporters of the administration. Could they become like Hitler’s brown shirts and harass everyone that doesn’t share their particular faith? History gives many examples of what happens when the camel gets its nose under the tent. The religious right would love to have a government with Christian laws against what they perceive as immoral and doesn’t fit within their narrow views.

Conspiracy Believers Abound

I really hope history is not repeating itself with all the conspiracy groups and militias which believe President Trump is their leader. The Ku Klux Klan is resurgent and marching along with new white nationalist groups. The Patriot Prayer in Oregon and the wide assortment of groups in Charlottesville, Washington D.C. and other places believe President Trump is one of them. The conspiracy group Q Anon is openly showing itself at Trump rallies. Showing themselves in such numbers tends to give others the confidence to join in their lunacy.

The Q believes Trump is directing an overthrow of the deep state or shadow government. His demeaning statements of people and the media are a rallying cry for these conspiracy whackos. They believe Trump is sending them messages when he misspells a word or makes a new one. I think he knows this and does so to encourage their devotion. Hopefully his nonsense hasn’t yet caused them to act with violence.

Old groups are reforming and new groups are forming with two goals. The white nationalists want to put all non-Europeans in their place, or kill them, or deport them no matter how many generations they have lived here. The second goal is to overthrow the existing government by force, if needed, and replace it with a populist one.

Years ago the FBI broke up and drove underground the Idaho militia groups. One of the leaders said they were part of an association overseen by a committee. What if all these white nationalist and conspiracy groups fall under the control of a committee controlled by one person? Could it become like Poland’s Law and Justice Party or Turkey’s Justice and Development Party or Hitler’s Brown Shirts of his nascent Nazi Party? American’s have shown a proclivity to believe in conspiracies. Let’s hope they never really get organized!

No Foreign Policy

A few months ago I wrote the reaction to President Trump’s tariffs on China’s products could be breaking the sanctions on North Korea and selling hundreds of billions of treasury debt. International relations has many layers and the President apparently doesn’t understand it’s complexities. He has browbeat Xi, then said they are friends, got them to vote to increase sanctions on Kim, keeps saying China has been screwing America for years, and keeps increasing the tariffs. Does he expect Xi to do nothing?

Trump is trying to get an oriental ruler to lose face by punishing his country. His language and tariffs raise support for Xi, who is well regarded by his people and will support him more. We now know the Chinese have allowed a porous border to open up again and are off loading fuel from Chinese tanker to North Korea tankers at sea.

On the other hand he lauds Putin while our maligned intelligence agencies report Russia is aiding thousands of North Korea workers by allowing them to work Russia’s Far East. Most of the wages will go to the North Korean government and Putin knows it.

I question whether Secretary of State Pompeo and National Security Advisor Bolton are being listened to by Trump. Their history is very different from what policy is being made by Trump. We can’t extend a hand to people and then repeatedly slap them with it. As a news junkie and a student of foreign relations, it is clear the United States has no clear foreign policy. Trump has demeaned our allies many times and even pushed their leaders out of his way for pictures. He has lauded our long standing enemies and frayed or broken ties with our much needed friends. Scorched earth policies never help the arsonist. People remember who started the fires.
