Single Payer Health Insurance

My wife and I have a Medicare Advantage Insurance The combination keeps our co-pays and deductibles affordable. For the uninformed, Medicare has a prescribed rate for about everything. United Health Care pays much or most of the remaining and we pay what’s left.

We have been covered by insurance since our first days of work. Few people can say that today and even will less in the future. Medicaid will become more important as jobs pay less and less of us are employed. Medicaid means the government is already picking up the total tab. I have yet to talk to someone from another country who would change their system for our mess.

The simple answer is people do not have a “right” to good health but I think we have a moral responsibility to keep Americans from dying on hospital steps. A simple program (nothing is simple in government) could be based on Canada’s highly successful program. I have talked with Canadians who remember when they had our system and they feel sorry for us. They know it’s because the political right and the super rich, who can afford the best care, won’t allow a change.

Companies with health plans can eliminate them. The military plans can be eliminated. High priced individual plans can be greatly reduced because the government covers most expenses. Those on Medicaid will see no difference in care. The backlog of V.A. hospitals and visits would be eliminated.

Those who cite costs of the program don’t count the savings from all the duplicated programs and the money each American would pay. Just like other countries, if I want to get elective surgery now, I pay for it myself instead of waiting my turn. Oops, that sounds like pre-Medicare insurance.

Flood Up Trickle Down

I read a letter to the editor in the Tribune’s September 29th paper from a proponent of the tax cut for rich and corporations. I don’t think he has ever work with the top 1%. I have and it doesn’t matter what their tax rate is. Every one of them saw cutting employees or reducing salaries, or cutting pensions and perks as steps in putting more money in their own pockets.

One multi-millionaire I liked very much. We ate several meals on his tab. He talked about how good he was to “his people” by keeping them working. When I looked through his finances I saw the net revenue had increased, the employee expenses had been slashed, and his income had grown by the difference.

Ryan may say “CEOs are making enough” but as the title of the Bond movie says ” The World Is Not Enough.” In the 1970s, CEOs made 14 times the salary of their average employee. Today, the ratio may be 100 to 200 to 1. They have been praised and given outrageous salaries because they cut expenses (meaning jobs or raiding pension plans).

If anyone thinks “Trickle Down Economics” works, they should remember what Bush I correctly called it, “Voodoo Economics.” He was right! Tax cuts don’t reduce greed; it increases it. By the Koch Brothers putting an aide in almost every Republican Senator’s and Representative’s office means tax reforms are for the top few, as Warren Buffet said some years ago and I seldom disagree with him.

CEOs Getting Paid Well

When Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House and a tax policy wonk, was asked by a blue collar worker in an Ashton, Pennsylvania plant if the corporate tax cut would be passed down to the worker. Mr. Ryan assured him it would be passed down by buying new facilities and machines. His direct answer to the question was “CEOs are already getting paid well.”

We all know any corporate tax cut is going first: to CEO’s salary; second: reduce the price of stock options, third: buying robots to replace that guy asking questions, and fourth: increasing dividends to raise the price of the stock which the CEO owns.

Those same CEOs are going to save hundreds of thousands to millions more on the tax cuts for the super rich. Running up the National Debt and their companies’ debt is a way of making the Republicans (and some Democrats) and CEOs look good now. The hammer comes down on their successors.

History shows Reagan cut taxes and the economy got a little better but boomed after he raised taxes which cut the deficits. Clinton/Gingrich raised taxes reducing the National Debt and the economy boomed. Bush II/Cheney lowered taxes and the economy dropped causing the National Debt to explode. Because of the Great Recession Obama kept the tax rates low hoping to keep the economy from collapsing and continuing to expand the debt. Now they want to reduce taxes for the rich, increase the debt, and get re-elected. Who owns America, not the 99% of us.

The Domino Wars

PBS’s Viet Nam War series tries to discredit the so-called falling domino strategy. The idea was if Viet Nam fell it would become totally communist and Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia and Indonesia would follow.

After Mao lost over a million Chinese “volunteers” in the Korean “Police action”, he decided to spread his kind of Communism to the smaller Asian nations. Colonial Viet Nam was the first domino to get material help against the capitalists he hated. By sending just a few Chinese military but lots of arms and food, he avoided another confrontation.

The other Indo-Chinese Nations were to fall after Viet Nam defeated their “oppressors”. Since the timeline was stretched by the American involvement, Laos was changed from a monarchy to sympathetic independent allowing the North to build a vast road network to the South. Cambodia went with their own brand of communism. Indonesia, Burma, and Thailand either had brief flings with communism or rebels who didn’t manage to overthrow their countries’ government.

Did our long war make a difference? I think it may have made a difference by changing the time table and propping up some of the dominoes.

According to the memoirs of the North Viet Nam’s army chief of staff, General Nyugen Giap, he put everything the North and Viet Cong had into the Tet Offensive. If it hadn’t of been for the V.C, using the old calendar and the N.V.A. using the new calendar (a day later) they might not have suffered a tremendous defeat. The V.C. was almost wiped out as a combat force and the North’s troops sustained terrible losses.

If the news media (Walter Cronkite and a few other reporters) hadn’t declared the war was lost, General Giap had planned to pull back his troops and wait until we left. Instead the war dragged on.

Gullible Americans

Our Constitution is an Occam’s razor for so many issues the Founding Fathers could not fathom. The First Amendment is a great example of this. Some courts have decided to shield the internet lies as protected speech.

European courts have done the opposite and sites like FaceBook have had hundreds of employers knocking down submittals on their site. They know the Russians and extremists use the internet and social media to deceive and recruit gullible people so they remove it as soon as possible. Fines and jail can be given to the originators if found and the sites that allow the information to stay up.

American gullibility was demonstrated today when a college educated person said we should be scared that a North Korean satellite is actually an EMP bomb designed to explode over the U.S. It will kill all electronic devices and take us back two hundred years.

Other examples are Autism from vaccines, today’s climate change is normal, eclipse omen, and a million political stories. Like the EMP bomb and other ridiculous lines, people don’t check on them, or even pause to think if it is even possible.

We have become so time obsessed that checking or thinking is considered a waste of time. Today’s political campaigns are based on electorate gullibility. The Goebbel’s “big lie” system for mind control still works.

Twenty-Fifth Amendment

For those Americans that have not studied the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the Constitution, it allows for a coup d’état of an American President. It only requires Vice-President Mike Pence and eight cabinet members to make Pence the forty-sixth President of the United States.

The confirmation requires the approval of a few leaders in Congress. Few would vote against getting rid of Trump in favor of Pence.

Impeachment I agree with but a coup d’état by nine people is of questionable moral and American democratic principles. Trump is not made of the right stuff and may be our worst President, but a coup is not the way to replace him.

Omen Countered

Several people have told me they believe that a solar eclipse was an omen of bad things going to happen. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes happen every year. The real catastrophe happened last November.

In an effort to counter the normal bad omen of the eclipse, I threw our big salt crystal over my left shoulder, knocked seven times on a hickory nut tree with an oaken mallet, and ran seven circles in a counter-clockwise direction. I did all this while wearing a broad brimmed black hat with a white ostrich feather sticking out of the hat band’s left side.

I will repeat this process the summer of 2020 to avoid another catastrophe. At my age I don’t know if I will be around for April 8, 2024, so I may need a stand-in. Volunteers would be appreciated.

Statutes and Monuments

I think I have more historical knowledge than most readers having 29 semester hours in History and read hundreds of military history books. Slavery was only one reason for the Civil War and most of the Confederate soldiers had no slaves and did not want or need any.

A great many officers had slaves because they came from wealthy families. Some were regular army and went to West Point. Robert E. Lee put down the John Brown rebellion and was offered command of all Union Armies. He turned down President Lincoln’s offer to fight for Virginia.

Statutes and monuments of the leaders of the rebellion should not be removed because they did or did not have slaves. They fought because they didn’t want the federal government telling them what they could and couldn’t do (Sound familiar?) Former slaves had slaves if they could afford them. Some slaves were treated as expensive livestock. Some were treated very well and others were not. The outside slaves were often overseen by another slave. The inside slaves were often treated like family. Slaves were needed because cotton and tobacco crops were labor intensive and labor was in short supply. Indentured Europeans had stopped coming and were more expensive. They were only available for seven years and did not withstand heat.

The only Confederate leader I think should be despised is the guerilla leader, Nathan Bedford Forrest. For those who don’t know of his treatment and murder of black soldiers and civilians during the Civil War, should educate themselves about the Fort Pillow Massacre. The other thing he is famous for is founding the Ku Klux Klan. I think his identity should be treated here like Germany treats Hitler.

The radical white supremacist groups need to be put down, destroyed, and forgotten about. These radical groups hate all other races and ethnics along with Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus.

How can our President support these groups when he has several Jewish people around him including his daughter and son-in-law? His business committees resigned because he included the protesters in his statement.

These people have not read nor care about the Constitution and its Amendments. They have their own agendas and most of us don’t fit into it.

Conservatives Suspend Priorities

Wow! Isn’t it interesting how all those Republican conservatives from Texas have changed their minds on government spending? They were far out front in being against funding any spending on Hurricane Sandy’s destruction in the Northeast.

Now they want tens of billions from the Federal Government for Southeast Texas and Louisiana’s damage from Hurricane Harvey. The area was told to expect exactly what happened and where it will happen from NOAA. The same agency they think is spending too much on worthless studies and equipment. In Texas if it benefits somebody else it’s pork and should be cut. Those Texas conservatives and President Trump haven’t even put forth someone to be FEMA director. Texas demands FEMA aid more than Florida, because of floods, tornadoes, hurricanes and, would you believe, drought.

Another 3.3 billion was to be cut from the Community Development Block Grants that would help places like Houston. Want to bet instead of a cut those to-hell-with-the-rest-of-you Texans will want to increase the grants.

Florida conservatives like those in Texas are climate change deniers, but have gotten hundreds of millions for new flood control projects in their coastal cities to compensate for the rising ocean levels.

I do agree with a great deal of the conservative philosophy, but I abhor the two-faced people who say one thing and do the opposite. They know what they tell the people to get elected is wrong but being in power is more important to them.

These people choose to divide our country as a means to deceive us into voting for them. Just like Donald Trump deceives a small number of Americans to get elected and keeps them supporting him by saying what his supporters want to hear.

Tax Cuts Again

Why is it every time we have a Republican President, the rich and all corporations get a big tax cut? The Bush II tax cut put us back on the road to big deficits and growing debt.

Reagan’s tax cuts ballooned the deficits and debt. He was big on telling Americans they shouldn’t live on debt and should cut purchases. He reduced revenue, spent more, and ballooned the deficits. He then did a huge tax decrease to cut deficits.

Clinton and Gingrich had paid off most of the national debt before Bush II pushed us into a quagmire of deficit and debt. When the great recession hit, he and Obama couldn’t raise taxes. Making them permanent was a mistake.

Now Trump and the nutty conservatives in the house want to cut taxes on the rich by 50%. This will just drive us deeper into debt. Many on Wall Street think the greater threat to America is the National Debt. They think increases and cutting expenditures is necessary to save us.

We need to raise taxes and cut deductions to pay for all the government has been doing and is supposed to do. This race to the bottom with some other countries that are bankrupting themselves is absolutely stupid!

For those tax cutting conservatives, remember the Egyptians were supposed to save up grain during the seven good years for use in the seven bad years. Maybe they really don’t want to use the commonsense statements in the Bible or just haven’t read the Bible. Its aspirations and theirs diverge greatly. Clinton/Gingrich spent the money paying off debt so it could be run up when needed. There was no reason to run up debt during Bush II’s administration except for the tax cuts. It was a bad idea then and a terrible idea now. Voodoo economics has never worked. It’s a conservative myth that conservatives have nailed their feet on.
