What has happened to truth in America? One of President Donald Trump’s money makers is Truth Social. Seldom does he say any truths on it and in fact, he lies about the lies he previously says on the site. Millions of Americans believe what he posts so his sycophants must continue saying them even when they have trouble keeping up with his changes. Those elected Republicans must continue saying them even when they know they are lies or get blasted by Trump and kicked out of office as several already have been.
Isn’t whitewashing our history another type of lie? When he sees the information he doesn’t like on truthful plaques and has the signage removed, it’s a lie isn’t it? When he causes the truth to be skewed to fit his reality, isn’t it a lie? When he supports groups that spread lies on social media and by parades through our streets, isn’t he a party to those lies? We all know about one of those groups which have convinced people NAZI death camps didn’t exist.
Home schoolers teach their students the lies they believe. Without the day-to-day oversight at the homes and private schools many lies are spread through generations. It is harder to kill a lie than to kill the truth. For some reason Americans had rather believe a wild lie than a truth they can see with their eyes.
Those who spread the lies they or others created are protected under the first amendment and those who spread the truth can be sued under our libel laws if they are incorrect in a report. Somehow I don’t think the founding fathers foresaw our predicament. Maybe they had some inkling with the political lies of their time! Today Phineas T. Barnum would be outclassed by today’s con artists.
